First of all, Maya is more expensive then C4D. Blender on the other hand is free, as you said, and is a complete 3D and animation suite. Here's two tutorials to get you started on creating 'C4D stuff' in Blender.

But Blender is for modelling. C4D is abstract. It really is completely different.

That is a common misconception, of course it isn't helped by the term of 3D abstract pieces being called C4Ds. Both C4D and Blender are modeling applications that have the ability to create abstract art. This is just like GIMP and Photoshop being photo editing software but having the ability to create digital paintings.

Also, C4D is commercial software. There is a demo on Maxon's website but the full application is just under 1000 USD, for the version with the least bells and whistles.

The biggest difference I found between the C4D demo and full version when I had the demo was saving.

I don't think you can save your renders properly. Not sure if that was definite, but I found myself print screening and copying into Photoshop and saving. Also not sure if it's still like that though, this was a long time ago D:

I'm no sure of the C4D demo but as Nicky said, I'm sure it includes a watermark or something that restricts the user. I can however assure you that Blender has far more features. It has a game engine, particles, a fluid simulator, cloth simulator, video editing tools, compositor, plugin support, and many more. My advice, go with Blender. The C4D demo won't get you far and Blender is as cheap as it gets: free.

the only difference with c4d demo is that you cant save
you'll have to do what nicky says, print screen+save in photoshop

1.It's C4D, not CD4

2.You can use Google Sketchup (just use search)

3.Blender as previously stated.

4. Google free 3D modeling programs

i made realistic items.

personaly i have tried both pieces of software and cinema 4D is the better one.
and it has better capabilities for making abstract pieces, but obviously it costs.

That's what I did too.
It still works.
And C4D isn't meant for abstracts...That's like the oppisite of what it is supposed to do...
