The mere existence of the Image button implies to players who aren't particularly forum savvy yet or haven't read the rules yet that they're allowed to post images. Since embeded images are no longer allowed except for under extremely specific circumstances, I think it would make a lot more sense simply tell people how to do so where and when it's allowed, and get rid of the button all together. Like with the quote button.

The image button serves its purpose for Encyclopaedia entries. Removing it all together would not be a good thing.

Edit: I think it states in the Forum Rules about use of the image button.

Adding to what Digital X said, they are useful for guide writers when they want to add image tags to their guides. That rule would be useful on GD boards where that is indeed not allowed, but I don't think changing the post format to specific boards is feasible.

Yeah I know it states that, it's just that it's so simple to copy and paste the words {image}{/image} a few dozen times and insert the urls between them, and a lot of players aren't going to read the rules before they post. The existence of the button seems a recipe for abuse and problems.

From the AQW rules thread:

quote:

Claiming ignorance of these rules is absolutely NO excuse, as you agreed to abide by them when you signed up for your forum account.

Having your post edited to make it a link is not hurting anyone, so while most people indeed don't read the rules, they aren't going to be banned for posting a image.

Also, regarding your argument to remove the image tags as it's only doing the image code, the same could be said about all buttons.

My point is kind of not coming across clearly enough. People who do the encyclopedia thing are already going to know about the image tags, joe troll who just created an account to irritate and shock as many people as possible may not. Eventually a Joe Everytroll is going to get on and post an extremely graphic or disturbing picture, and quite a few people will see it before a mod gets a chance to delete it.

Yes, but no system is perfect, and even with this change it wouldn't be. Removing the button would not remove the problem, and could actually make more problem to people. I understand your concerns, but there really isn't any point in doing so, specially because I am yet to see something like that happen, and neither it is a frequent issue.

Ok, well I sincerely believe removing the image button would significantly reduce the risk of a child finding a lewd graphic image when he clicks on a forum post, and I can't see it really causing a problem for anyone. I'm not going to press the point though, that's just my opinion on the subject. I've seen several images where they don't belong, and reasoned that most people may not even know to add them if there's no image button. Besides I got into trouble myself with that button when I first started out.

Well, it's relatively easy to discover ways to post images. You can ask in Forum Support, and I know that information is in Forum Rules and Resources as well. Nor is it a serious breach of forum rules to post an image without knowing the policy on embedding images unless the member were to do so repeatedly, ignoring the instructions of the forum staff.

I also doubt, myself, that removing a button would deter trolling by members. ;)
