We define "advertisement" as anything in the likes of a "click me!" signature or a link that could be counted as inappropriate and that is not related to AE, though that is not limited only to signatures (as you can see the rule is also present in the "Posting Behavior" section, and not only on the Signatures one). Basically, if you're promoting a link without telling the user what it is, independent of the way you do so, it falls as "advertisement". However, there are exceptions: A signature with your character name and a link to its character page is not advertisement as you're implying what the person will find upon clicking. Now, a signature that says "Click on me!" and a link to the character page is not allowed, as the person is not aware of what the links contains. It's not just a matter of what the link in question leads to, but also of how you show it to other forumites, so whatever something is or not an advertisement is up to the interpretation of the staff.
