It seems that Official Contests Forum board, could really use an ArchKnight or two to watch over it.

During AE's contests, many new forumites make their way to the AEF community, seeking to cash in on the promised prizes. These contests often see the biggest flood of new users of any other single event.

These users could definately use some guidance. Guidance which could be provided by the OC AK's!

Possible Changes/Benefits:

  • Expedites judging by providing AE Staff/Judges with compact list of entries
  • Provide accurate and timely responses to questions/problems
  • Clear out clutter in threads (i.e. Double posts, second entries, rule breaking, entries/discussion posted in wrong thread, etc.)
  • Provide FAQ'd threads explaining necessary information for uploading/editting
  • Etc.

So? Thoughts?

AKs are not AE staff. Therefore, they are allowed to participate in official contests as normal members. If a group of non-staff users were given moderating power in Official Contests, that would create issues with fairness. If there are serious rule violations in Official Contests, Moderators should be able to handle it.

The biggest problem, as far as I see, is that any AKs who AK the area can't participate in the contests. currently, Mods/Staff aren't allowed to compete for obvious reasons, but AKs can usually compete in contests. The AKs in the Contests area wouldn't be allowed to compete, in order for fairness and what not.

As I understand it, we don't have AKs in the Official Contests forum because it would restrict the ability of those AKs to participate in contests. That said, the Official Contest forum is watched pretty closely when there's an active contest by both AKs and moderators so problems that come up should still be handled in a timely fashion. If you see an issue that looks like it was missed you can PM a moderator and they will handle it.

If you think there are stickies that would be useful to have in that forum you can always PM a moderator or post your ideas here and they'll get looked at.

You all bring up the point of fairness, but the way I see it, the AK's would not take part in judging, nor would they be able to have any other upperhand in the contests themselves. They would merely police the discussion and guide the lost. Much like the AK's in the OOC or any other GD boards. Also, by compiling the entries into a condensed list, it would greatly decrease the amount of time it takes for AE Staff to judge the entries and annouce the winners.

I have already notified Moderators regarding certain situations, and I will definately PM my FAQ idea.

They'd be capable of editing/deleting posts. Would you really want to enter a contest with this sort of disadvantage?

ArchKnights are already understood to be trusted members of the forum community, otherwise they would not be elevated to that position, is this not true?

What about when a contest has started the staff ask among the Ak's or mods who is not interested in joining the contest and they will be given the temporary power to that board.

That would fall under the Forum Support's FAQ:

quote:

9) "Why don't you appoint some temporary Moderators or ArchKnights in <insert spammy board>?"
quote:

If we trust someone enough to make them a temporary ArchKnight, or promote an ArchKnight to a temporary Moderator, then we trust them enough to promote them full-time. There is no "half" or "temporary." If you feel a specific board is having problems, please let that board's Head Moderator know.

As i said AMONG the current AK/Mods since they are already a full time AK/Mods.
They will have the power to that board since they will not be participating in the contest.

How would that affect public perception of the fairness of contests? I'm certain that many members would be quite unhappy with the possibility of cheating, even if the "cheaters" were a trusted group.

I think the majority of members understand the position of AK's and would understand the nature of their actions. And as Sir Gnome descibes in his guide for Dealing with Other Users,

quote:

For issues with an Archknight, please contact them directly and attempt to resolve it. If that fails:

Contact the head moderator of the board the incident relates to. If that does not resolve your issue,

Contact the head of the Archknights. If that does not resolve your issue,

Contact the head administrator. Circe's word is final.

If this problem were to come up, there is already a process in place to remedy the issue.

Though the issue is noted all the same, I still feel this one problem would be far outweighed by the benefits.

The reason they dont need it is because staff members (such as the one who posts it) read the posts.
Meaning, if they see something that shouldnt be there, they could delete/edit/etc. Instead of having ArchKnights do that.

Duncan,

I personally don't think there is need for such group. As stated by the first 3 posts, it would not assure the participating members without power that there would be no cheating. Yes, I do understand that members could contact a moderator, but such problems could be easily avoidable without forming the group in the first place.

Also, there isn't going to be contest popping out there every day. In fact, there I'd say there's about one contest every three weeks to a month. Therefore, it just feels kinda unneccessary to have a group for such a quite board. And during the time when there is a contest going on, members, both AKs and normal forumites, could contact a moderator when a problem does pop up, whether it be through PM or IRC.

Most of the time (in between contests) the board is unused.
An ArchKnight for such a position would be temporary in the sense that the duty required by the board would be required sparingly, if ever.
Because of this, and what has been stated before by other forum members, I believe that ArchKnights for the sole purpose of watching the contest board are unnecessary.

As with all boards, if you feel there is a problem, you should contact that board's ArchKnights. Or in this case, as there are none, if you feel there is a problem, contacting a moderator is the correct action.

I honestly cannot see any benefit from assigning ArchKnights to the contests board.

EDIT: Ha, I didn't see what moneybags wrote. But I agree with his argument. ..Verlyrus
