I think you'll have to trust us when we say how prevalent the issue was. I was not staff at the time, yet I remember looking at war threads in AQ GD and not being able to load the page, the posts were so long. When members cannot load forum pages, along with the server stress Chii mentioned, that's generally a warning sign that something needs to change. As ironic as it is, the problem was that quoting in pyramids was simply too easy. Nobody bothered to delete the unnecessary parts of the quoted text, since all they had to do instead was hit a button and then reply. In fact, in addition to the stress on computers and servers, it got to the point where it was confusing as to what a member was responding; they would write one line of text as a response to a massive wall of posts which was almost entirely unrelated to the nature of the reply. And as skeptical as you may be, deleting all superfluous text would require significant dedication of time, when you consider the possibility (and likelihood, in fact) that almost every post on every page would have to be looked over, read through to ascertain the important section of the quote, and edited, with most of the quote being deleted. So, while using manual quote tags may require a bit more work on the part of the member, it has the benefit of requiring members to actually think about what they are quoting. In this case, I'm not sure less work is better. And because this may seem at odds with my previous post, I'll mention again that as far as I knew, a feature already existed that members could use, a feature most members simply did not know existed. If there isn't, I believe it's probably best it does not.
