I think it's a well known fact, among both members of the DC and general forumgoers that the DC is dying.

Although some might argue, that the whole essence of the DC is having unrestrained, yet restricted adult debate with a few select members of the community, I believe that if we want to further the DC's life, the moderators will have to loosen the restrictions on entering, There has been many a time, when I: skimming through the application thread looking for hilariously bad essays to amuse myself with, have come across some good ones with no explicable reason for non-entry. Of course, the moderators cannot let just anyone in, but during the debating and disccussion those they allow in will learn and become more productive members of the community. I simply suggest the moderators take a slightly more relaxed approah to acceptanceinto the sub-forum, if they want to keep it alive.

Entry to the Debate Club is based first and foremost on the behavior an applicant exhibits. The essay is there to show you can reasonably develop an argument and support it with evidence, and it is an important part of the application but it's not the end-all be-all criteria for admittance to the Debate Club.

The restrictions on joining the Debate Club are in place so that mature topics can be discussed by its members without having to worry about threads getting out of hand like they would be expected to if left out in the open for anyone to reply to. Loosening these restrictions would require heavier moderation of the subforum as well as placing restrictions on discussable topics which defeats the purpose of having the Debate Club in the first place.

Having a debate club with no debate defeats the purpose of having the debate club in the first place!

If the people within the Debate Club can't be expected to debate maturely, then the Debate Club gets closed down because it winds up being just as bad as just leaving the threads in OOC, meaning the act of debating itself becomes prohibited.

I'd like to say, we do have debates every so often, it's never going to be super active. I mean, the American politics threads, I don't post in, because I don't understand American politics. Things that I don't have much of a view on, I don't post on. I post on the things that interest me. So we do have debates, so it still has a purpose.

Yeah, but having a Debate Club with restrictions that are close to what the OOC already is wouldn't work either. It would make it more active at the cost of the "debate" being no different from the main-forum.
IMO it's better with a DC that is low on activity, ('cept for when new threads are up because then it tends to be quite alive) with serious threads and good debaters, than a DC that has high activity but a low level on the debates.
