Lately I have seen many very inspirational speeches and other posts by various forumites during this and other wars. My suggestion is that those people who are constantly trying to inspire fellow players not to give up, even in the face of vast numbers of enemies recieve the title "Inspiring". This would be a title without the option of using your own choice of avatar, but would nonetheless give forumites something else to strive for and show how much they like to keep up the morale and hopes of their fellow forumites. I know that I have been inspired to keep fighting even when exhausted just from some of the speeches given by other players on the forums. I am not sure if I explained this right, but I think it is something that deserves look.

One thing to keep in mind is that members are only titled if they display all-round exemplary behaviour. While their title may indicate their specific strengths, if a user, say, helps out plenty in a Q&A board but then takes on a poor attitude in a GD board, he is not a viable "Helpful" candidate. Therefore, a user who is "inspiring" but doesn't meet the standard criteria for other titles isn't really ideal for titling.

Adding to that, if a user is worth titling due to his being "inspiring", he probably deserves a title such as "Friendly", along with normal avatar uploading privileges. However, if he truly is that phenomenally inspiring, the staff do have the option of handing him an "Inspiring" title or similar. One of my own titles was "Productive" (which I totally didn't deserve :P) because the moderator titling me thought that it fitted. So, even if it is very rarely exercised, the option is always there, but I think that a standard "Friendly" title should generally cover "inspiring" users of the kind that you have mentioned.

I think I might need to clarify. I knew I hadn't worded that quite right. My suggestion is for this title to be given to people who mainly post during wars and do their best to inspire their fellow players. Those people who, because they really only post when their is a war don't really have a chance to be noticed enough to get a title otherwise. I know that until very recently, I only posted during wars, as I was usually too busy to play much except during wars. That is when I would put nearly everything aside and give my all to helping out as much as I could. This is also the reason why I said that this title of "Inspiring" would not include the option of being able to upload your own avatar. If that was a title that was already in use, I actually would have expected that instead of "Friendly", as until recently, I used to jokingly threaten to eat people's faces if they didn't fight harder... which is not very friendly; but did, however, get people to keep fighting.

Hmm, I think I understand your suggestion a little better now. However, I'd like to bring up a couple of fresh points.

Half of titling a user is about rewarding him for good behaviour, but the other half of the act is about designating him as a role model that other users should strive to emulate (within reason, of course; "title seekers" are definitely frowned upon). This means that a user's activity level is factored in when considering him for a title - Will he continue posting after he is given his title, so that others can witness his excellent attitude? Or is he the kind to drop off the radar immediately after? When you apply this to users who only post during wars, it means that they don't really display that particular quality of activity. Also, if a user only posts during wars, that complicates the task of gauging how "good" of a poster he truly is. A poster who receives a title for inspiring his fellow players during the course of a war could very well turn around and begin trolling or flaming in other threads, and the staff wouldn't have been able to see it coming.

Additionally, as it currently is, the system of titles does not provide exact criteria for each title. This means that a "title seeking" user will not be able to open up a list of tasks and reluctantly complete them in exchange for being labelled "Friendly" or "Constructive". To offer the possibility of being titled "Inspiring" in exchange for posting in a certain way during wars seems to me to be a very specific procedure. It would encourage users to dishonestly mimic those who display genuine "Inspiring" qualities as a part of their normal posting attitude.

Although I do see why you would like users who inspire their fellow players during wars to be rewarded, I think that it'd require a fairly significant amount of rearranging of the objectives and values that the current title system operates upon.

I see what you are saying., and you have made some good points that I didn't realize or think about. I did mean for those players who regularly post during wars though, and that no matter what tend to behave when using the forums. As I said, until very recently, I only posted during wars and on the wars threads, as I really enjoyed the comraderie I found there during the various wars. My problem was that I had so much stuff going on in my life that I tended to only make time for really getting into playing DF during wars, as that is when I knew my fellow players needed my help. Recently, with people that I have chatted with on the forums often becoming AKs and interns (as well as Eric getting his internship); I have begun to post on more and more threads. I was just thinking it would be nice for the people that I have seen posting in the war threads loyally war after war to get a little recognition too. As I said, though, you did make some very good points.

And just a bit of extra info, before I started posting on other threads, and having only started posting in the war threads last August during that Friday the 13th War... I had over 700 posts just in the war threads.

I like this idea. It seems close to the 'Friendly!' but in noticeable ways, different. Inspiring meaning one who gives ideas and sets a role-model for those junior members...
But how exactly would one be able to achieve this title? Making speeches is something that everyone can do... And if everyone on the boards made speeches, it wouldn't be special...
But an interesting idea and I understand the concept.

In all honesty I'd personally consider the 'Friendly' title incorporating the elements you mentioned for an 'Inspiring' title. Friendly members make other members feel welcome and go out of their way to really make the forum experience as fun as possible for everyone. However, titles are awarded a bit differently in each forum and it is possible one forum head may consider 'Friendly' as an umbrella term for 'Inspiring' where another would not. ;)

I would like to add, though, that while Ev is correct (about Friendly being more of a catch-all than Inspirational) that doesn't mean there wouldn't ever be call for it. Titles are a tricky biz. To handle that, we have a rather firm chart: Helpful, Creative, Friendly, Constructive. Titles outside those (not including Debatable and any contest title) are possible, but require circumstances to justify it.

That pretty much means that I very happily grant a more custom title to a player that I feel warrants it. Titles are not just words to the forum staff - they're a clear recognition of a player's exceptional behavior and a very bright light on a particular user saying "Look at them. Do as they do because they're extraordinary!" Your suggestion to include "Inspirational" as a possible title is a good reminder to mods (and to players) that helpfulness comes in many different packages and that positive and uplifting contributions to the forum discourse is one of the most important manifestations of a good attitude.

Thanks for pointing that out!!

@ Doomstalker: I know what you are saying, but I didn't mean just for giving speeches. I really meant a whole inpirational attitude during the wars. Those who never give up and are always encouraging others to keep fighting, whether that is by posting a speech or just by continuously showing everyone that they are not giving up and don't think others should either.

@ Everest: I do see what you mean. I just thought that "Friendly" or "Helpful" incorporating more of the aspects that make a player stand out, it would be a boost to morale if sometimes a player could be singled out for continuously doing a certain thing on the forums they frequent that makes them stand out that much more in the eyes of the Mods and the AKs.

@ Circe: Thank you. I was a little nervous about starting the thread, as I have never started one or made any type of suggestion before. I am happy to hear that you think my idea might have a little bit of merit for the future. Your avvy is a horse, right?

It's a pony!! ~ Circe
