The Odors Backstory

The man that would become The Odor was born to the mage Samantha Smith and the woodcutter John Smith 31 years ago. At that point they already had a son by the name of Lordan and later he would get a sister named Sinaka. Samantha had always disliked her normal name that very much clashed with her status as mage so she made sure her children would never be mistaken for someone else, and as all good mages unaware that there is such a thing as overdoing it. The Odor was a happy boy and started to show signs of magical aptitude early in his life, a fact that lead Samantha to choose him over her firstborn son Lordan to be her apprentice. Since this is a fantasy story for a fantasy game you probably assume Lordan hate his brother for taking his place by their mother’s side, but that was not the case as Lordan was quite pleased with helping his father in the forest and learning the humble woodsman’s trade. From the age of 10 The Odor studied under his mother.

One late evening he woke up hearing his mother talking with someone outside. He sneaked up and peaked out the window. He saw his mother in her grey mage robe and a tall man in a black robe.
“How far have you gotten with it? People are expecting us to start showing some results. ” the man said, his tone sharp.
“He is coming along on an unprecedented rate. Just last week he showed ME something I hadn’t realized about theoretical magic! In five years he is picking up things I never even considered!” Samantha replied ecstatically. She didn’t seem to be looking at the mans face.
“He?” The man said, his voice now dripping contempt.
“Well we couldn’t keep up calling him It after he was born.” The Odor could hear a slight note of worry in his mothers’ voice as she finally looked up at the man.
“”He” is not another child. Remember that Samantha. It needs to remain secret. If Noxus were to find out about me and my friends dabbling in matters he wants unstudied we would at least lose our scholarship. And probably our heads.” The man said, his voice rising. “I never wanted to do this with you but I was promised you at least would honour the terms we set up. You are risking his stability. This is not the time to act noble and think you are doing anyone a favour!”
“I have not broken any of the terms. I do not think we are threatening his mind with some decency and humane treatment. “
“This is the first time something like this is tried. We need to view it like a clinical trial.” The mans voice had retaken its cold and sharp tone.
“He is mine now. You finished your part and I will show you the results in another 6 years and…”
“I risked EVERYTHING for this! I have broken rules I doubt anyone knows existed! And I will not allow you to ruin it for your little family dream!” the man now straight out yelled at her. As his voice rose roaring winds billowed up making his robe flow out behind him revealing armour of a material worryingly similar to bone. “I WILL NOT ALLOW IT!” Suddenly he threw out a hand and an orb of red and black shadows hit his mother in an explosion.
“MOM!”
The Odors scream made the man look up and smiled.
“Promotion here I come.” He started rising up through the air towards the boy.

Maleeus was having an AWESOME day. He had gotten to finally beat up that pompous Samantha and now he would have his promotion guarantee to himself. He stopped in front of the kids apparently frozen form.
“Pling! Floor 2. Young boys, sport goods and summer clothes.” Then he noticed the child mumbling something under his breath. “What are you saying? Speak up!” He leaned in closer and almost had a brain haemorrhage when he heard.
“Fireball, fireball, fireball, fireball.”
“OH COME ON!”

The Odors ruse had worked. He needed to protect his family. He splayed his hand towards the mans face and an oval of flames burst forth striking his attacker at practically point blank range. His foe was launched backwards several feet before falling out off the air. The Odor slumped up towards the wall. He had never put that much energy in a spell before. He felt utterly drained. He tried to call out to alert his father and siblings but couldn’t get more than a tired wheeze out. He managed to push himself off the wall and onto the windowsill so he managed to look out over the yard. And he saw the man stand back up. Half of his face was charred and blackened and he had cast of his robe that lay smouldering on the ground. He waved his hand and a jet black rod of steel appeared in a cloud of shadows in his hand. He once again hovered into the air, this time with a murderous look on his now damaged face. The Odor tried to scream again but he was still too drained. He saw his assailant approach but was still incapable to even try to fight him off with his physical abilities. Suddenly he heard a stiff wind picking up and the dark magician was smashed into the wall of the house from which he once again fell to the ground. Samantha stood on their porch, winds whipping around her and her golden staff twirling like a drum major cane as she directed the wind.
“John!!! Get the kids out of here!” she shrieked as she struck the mage with another wind strike when he was getting up, sadly not hard enough to send him off his feet again. The man hurled his staff towards Samantha but she dodged to the side and launched a fireball towards her foe but a wave of shadows swept over his body and the burning projectile flew straight through him. The mans staff turned around in the air and he caught it gracefully before he raised his hand and a spear wielding skeleton tore itself out of the ground and leapt at Samantha.
The Odor's door was kicked open by his father with his brother Lordan a step behind holding Sinaka in his arms.
“Get away from the window, Odor!” John shouted as he ran in and practically dragged him away. The Odors legs didn’t quite carry him but his father was strong enough to support him.
“What’s wrong with you, son?” John asked. “Did he hit you with anything?”
“No…. I just… cast a… too powerful spell…” The Odor managed to stutter forth under much effort.
“Thank the Avatars… Here, Drink this.” John said as he handed him a bottle of blue liquid. “You’ll feel better.”
He put the bottle to his lips and as it poured down his throat he felt a surge of energy rush through him. He loosened himself from his fathers grip as they made it down the stairs to the bottom floor. His father and brother took their axes and opened the front door while The Odor took over carrying Sinaka. His mother had been put on the defensive while they had been going outside. The undead that had been summoned before he was taken away from the scene appeared to have been vanquished but his mother had raised a blue energy shield which was now under constant assault from black surges of magic. His father looked at his beleaguered wife for a few seconds before he kept heading away from the fight.
“And where are we going?” The necromancer asked accompanied by a hand gesture and a trio of skeletons clawed their way up through the soggy ground. John replied by smashing his heavy axe blade into the lead skeleton's head caving it in, causing the undead fiend to collapse, but this left him unguarded as the skeleton on his right dug its teeth into his right arm. Lordan leapt forth axe above his head and smashed it into the back of his fathers’ aggressor, cleaving it in half. Sadly this left one going for The Odor and Sinaka, but before it had a chance to hurt them an arc of lightning leapt from the forest line shattering the skeleton with a powerful boom. The Odor looked into the darkness among the trees where a pair of green glowing eyes flashed by.

Samantha was worried. Maleeus was very powerful and Necromancy was most certainly more useful than her Elementarism in this situation. She had hoped he would have been too distracted trying to get through her defences to notice her escaping family but it had not worked. But he had divided his attention, meaning that this was the time to launch an attack. She drew a breath before settling for her final moves. She reached within her and lifted her hand. An orb of magic left her and struck her foe, which was knocked a good four feet back. She saw the sedating energies she had stored within the spell taking effect and slowly stiffening the necromancer and started her assault. She raised her hand and an arch of lightning bolted into the Necromancer's armoured chest which blackened as her foe was struck to the ground. She called out to the Elements and they answered. Her body was filled up by the energy she called and arched out through her raised hand and crashed into her foe that was hurled to the ground where it came still. She looked down on the body of her foe. His chest plate had a crack in it and his face was blackened by her sons’ fire. Suddenly one of his eyelids flickered and a wave of dark energy swept across his body. He wasn’t down? She once again called the elements and they answered. She raised her hand once more and larger orb of focussed magical energy leapt from her fingertips and grounded itself in the Necromancer. The burst sent his body a good inch into the dirt.

When John heard the crack of magic he turned around. His Sam stood and looked down on the necromancer's body. Were the children safe? Lordan looked back too. An eerie silence fell over the scene. John signaled to Lordan to stay back and started walking back towards his wife, axe in hand... There might still be more undead creeping around. This place was so dangerous… But his family had always lived in Doomwood and no wimp of a necromancer would drive them from their land. He looked past Samantha to her foe and froze mid step.

Samantha was confused when her husband froze. Then she heard his scream:
“Sam!” He started running towards her and she spun around only to be met by a skeletal fist hitting her squarely over the jaw. She was knocked over and looked up at the skeleton standing above her. Behind it Maleeus rose from the ground.
“Are you familiar with the necromantic feat Turn, Samantha? It’s one of the niftier tricks in our repertoire. It allows us to for a brief window of time turn damage into a healing energy. I would go more into detail but I doubt you will learn it. Farewell Samantha.” He lowered his hand towards her face and with a searing pain it all went black.

“SAM!!!” John screamed once more as the necromancer's hand was enveloped by black fire that ate through Samanthas face. He ran even faster. As his foes skeleton turned to him he brought his axe down, cleaving its ribcage, before he swung it towards the necromancer who caught the blow on his staff.

Maleeus raised his hand against his foe and unleashed his magic on him. The energy arched over his body but the man brought his fist up and it connected with his burnt face. He staggered to the side and swiped the staff towards the mans legs, but as the staff was about to connect the feet left the ground and he felt the axe shatter his horned shoulder guard and eat into his shoulder. He once again staggered away from his attacker. God dammit… Samantha had taken a lot out of him… The axe came towards him once more but this time his defensive magic was ready.

John was ready as his axe went through the now ghostly form of the necromancer. As his foe once more materialised he brought up the axe-handle catching him over the jaw nearly knocking the man over. He brought another axe swing towards his foes face but he once again de-materialised and as he reappeared he lounged at him, raking his clawed gauntlet over his arm before sweeping his staff up into his ribcage making him stagger back. The Necromancer raised his hand and launched a dark red orb of magic at him which exploded in a shower of dank, stinking air. His shirt browned and rotted and he felt it burn his skin. He swung out at the necromancer but missed. His rage given strength was fading and the pain in his chest was spreading. The necromancer raised his hand once more and an echoing laughter sounded through the glade. John fell to his knees as even more of his strength was drained. His arms felt like leaden weights and his mind felt foggy. A distant noise came from the corner of his mind. He saw the man in front of him came closer. He looked down and said something…
“You… You are one tough bastard.” The gash in his shoulder had already stopped bleeding and seemed to be closing. “I was getting worried for a bit there. You will make one fine undead when this is over… If you behave and stay here while I grab your kiddo I might raise you AND Samantha…”
What kiddo? His kids… Lordan… The Odor… Sinaka… The necromancer walked past him. He got up on one knee and grabbed his axe. The Necromancer stopped as he heard him move but john felt a new born energy rush through him as he spun around, axe in hand. The mage raised a hand and dark bolts of magic zapped out, striking and cutting him deep but even as blood gashed from a dozen cuts he stayed true and eventually the axe cut into the necromancers neck, severing his head. John fell to his knees and then dropped over. And the world turned to solid black.

To Be continued.
