Step Right Up 2
*Note: Due to events out of our control, we are unexpectedly short-staffed this week. Still, Titan and I will work as hard as we can to release this on Friday. However, if we feel the feature is too lacking in polish or excitement, we will hold it until next week. Thank you for your patience!

You asked for it, and it's back! After a long hiatus, Valestra's Arcade is back in business and eagerly awaiting a flood of players both new and experience! For those of you who don't recall or weren't around, the Arcade used to be a battle mode in which you could deposit Battle Tokens (5 at a time) to join an Arcade Battle. This battle was just like an duel except it offered the chance to earn a prize if you won. The downside was that it was possible to win the duel and not win a prize.

This time, you will win a prize for every play. The prize may not be a jackpot every time, but you'll still never walk away empty-handed!

Excited yet? Read on to learn more about this revamped feature!

How Do I Arcade?
To participate in the Arcade, you must have at least one Arcade Token. This is not a new currency, but is a miscellaneous inventory item. You can acquire them by completing certain Daily Missions or by purchasing them from the ArcadeBots in Valestra's Arcade in Fortune City.

If you're having trouble finding Valestra's Arcade, there will be a link in the What's New page. If you're still lost, then the EpicDuel Wiki has you covered.

Once you're in the Arcade you can click on an ArcadeBot to bring up the Arcade interface. From there, you can play, view your current balance of Arcade Token, or buy more Arcade Tokens. Hitting the "Go" button will cycle through a list of possible prizes. You'll win something each time: it could be credits, a weapon, armor, or even a house! However, to keep the game's Credit economy from exploding, sellback on items won in the Arcade may be reduced from the normal values.

Expansion
We're building this feature with expansion in mind. For this release, we will only have one prize pool, but in the future, we plan to include selectable prize pools, allowing you to choose which set of prizes you wish to play for.

Another feature that may not be ready for Friday, is an Arcade Leaderboard featuring the all-time winners, complete with an evolving Arcade achievement. This achievement will track the value of your prizes so each time you play, you're basically earning Arcade experience! Even if it's not in-game Friday, we will still be tracking the data!

Our goal with this system is to never make an Arcade play feel wasted, and we believe this additions will make for a truly epic Arcade experience!

Rare Clarification
In last week's Design Notes, I mentioned that the Arcade would give you a chance to win retired rares. There was a bit of an outcry from those who were concerned that their own rares would be devalued. I'm happy to say, that you need not worry -- your hard-earned rares will remain rares. We've decided on a happy compromise to introduce Arcade exclusives -- items that can only be won in the Arcade. Some of these items will be revamped or reimaged versions of retired items. This preserved the value of the older rares while giving new players a reason to play! However, items like seasonal rares, limited quantity items, or prize-code items are still up for grabs! Also, legacy items like Founder Armor or Alpha Gear will be excluded for obvious reasons. I hope that addresses your concerns about rares in the Arcade!

Sweet I know what rares I am going to get like the rixty ripper and soul ripper from 2010 which I wanted so badly but since they are going to be arcade rares does that mean the artwork for the weapons will be similar in the past or just fresh to be clean and modified?

I hope for a SLIM chance of releasing this on friday. seems like a very promising release. Just a question, Will the arcade token be purchasable with credits?? or just plain varium only??

Thing with that is you need to battle and win but if you lose the token will be spent for nothing...

Pretty sure we will only be able to buy it for varium only like in AQW.

Oh I sure hope they release it today... ~Fingers Crossed~

it is based off of the old battle system still? While it is nice that they are bringing it back, the only builds I see winning this are all the zombie builds that go for wins oh joy -_-.

I'm sure you will be able to purchase it with both credits and varium, because there's a leaderboard and by making it available with credits and varium will make the Arcade Leaderboard fair for Varium Players and Non Variums.

Rene: You Don't have to Win a battle to get the prize, just deposit the token and you have a chance to win something, I don't even think you will have to battle.

Just as long as these so called seasonal rares do not have the cores like celtic cleaver with the lucky strike core and azrael swords that have their mark of azrael core, then I'm fine with it. Christmas weapons would be nice too since the icy chill core is a useless core and it is possible to beat George Lowe without them at all.

Edit: It would be VERY NICE to have a 2v2/juggernaut feature as a separate mode. There should be three arcade pods, one that does 1v1, 2v2 and juggernaut. Also to be fair, the items should have a label on them to differentiate real items from arcade items. This should make it easy to set prices in case bugs happen wherein if mjolnir gets dropped and there is a bug that traces its price with the REAL weapon sold by NPC's, it can prevent that bug from coding errors.

I strongly agree with this considering I don't 1v1. I'm sure there are more out there that don't 1v1 either.[The last arcade system only worked for 1v1.]

@ Chop suey

From what I am reading they will be using different rares not the same ones at least I hope that is what is going on.

Otherwise this arcade will undermine just about every rare promo item or rare item in the game that people have to spend money on (Legacy items excluded) which will undermine those who spent money to get these rares since someone can just win in the arcade and possibly get the item for free.

I am once again saying I am hoping I am wrong about this because otherwise they not only broke their promise of not bringing back old rare items that were suppose to vanish from the game for good, but also devalued those who actually spend money on these rares.

@Mother1,
What really is happening right now is the same with AQW's Wheel of Doom. It drops Rares!

Let's not just look at the negative sides of the Arcade. It's a good chance for people to get Rare items they want and at the same time make EpicDuel more populated. Honestly, to me, it's a great chance for new players to get Weapons from the past. BUT like the Design Notes stated, some will look different.

@ Scyze

We were also promised that our old rares that we paid for wouldn't come back either, and by doing this it breaks yet another promise that was made which is also why some of the players left from a while ago. Due to broken promises.

The dropping of rares ok that is good, however, the keep the old rares that you promised would come back or that people paid for out of non paying players hands. doing that is as I said before spitting in the faces of those who spent real money to buy these rares because any tom dick and harry that didn't spend a cent can have the chance of getting it.

Every single player has spent money on EpicDuel. We just don't realise them do we? Internet isn't free and neither is electricity.

Keeping a promise is hard at times. If you see that there is a chance to make the game more populated, take the chance. Have a gamble...

Some players are buying promotional items and some will know that it will come back later in-game. Shouldn't that also be an issue? Certainly you're going to have to work hard to get enough Credits for the item returning next year but if you enter the Arcade you've already worked hard to get the Arcade Token in the first place. You can buy the Arcade Token in-game but you've spent money/time on getting it.

Not if you are playing at a library or on someone else's bill. But I was talking about supporting the game financially and those who actually got these items on time! This as I said is spitting in those people's faces as well as devaluing their rares.

I remember them doing that with omega, and tell me what happened? As yes even more people left when they took that gamble.

If you read that design note you will see that it mentioned promo's made from the new azreal gear forward. It mentions nothing about bring back the older promo's (Delta phase and before) Otherwise we would see the old bionic battlegear, the old heartbreak Azreal promo Etc being brought back into the game. It was said by the staff that this stuff wouldn't be coming back ever, and putting these items into an arcade would as I said before devalue those who brought these items on time when they were available, or farmed offers to get the points to get these items.

Also since I know you read the design notes there are players who feel the same way as me since as the notes say there has been outcry of old rares being devalued by this.

Please don't overdo the topic before it is actually ingame.
The DNs already state that "true" rares will not make it into the arcade - only "normal" (seasonal ? ) rares will.
Also consider that these will have a low drop chance - which might get lowered further buy non-rare drops (e.g. assault bot).

I don't see the big problem here..

quote:

We've decided on a happy compromise to introduce Arcade exclusives -- items that can only be won in the Arcade. Some of these items will be revamped or reimaged versions of retired items. This preserved the value of the older rares while giving new players a reason to play! However, items like seasonal rares, limited quantity items, or prize-code items are still up for grabs!

Old rares will be back in revamped/reimaged versions, which are NOT the same as the original items. Your original item will remain rare and exclusive to you whilst newer players can get a "newer" version of it. AQ does it too - old rares "return" but they are revamped versions of old rares, whilst the original rare remains rare for those who have it.
Seasonals, LQS and prize-codes were never promised to be permanently rare and unavailable for others. Seasonal is self explanatory. LQS items are restocked every now and then, so they aren't rare but limited in stock. And prize-codes can be restocked at any time, up to the Staff.

Some common sense is also required. Your old promos will not be back. Old rares that were NOT a promo will be but in revamped/reimaged version. Original rare (say, Energy Rapier) will not come back but we may see revamped version of it. So if you own the Energy Rapier linked earlier, you will still have it and no one else can get it anymore. Players may get revamped version of it, but it will not be the same as yours and won't hold the same rarity (both, the points and on its own).

In other words, old rares are NOT returning or whatsoever. Revamped or reimaged versions do not fall under the returning rares policy, since they are not the same items. Two different ones - original and revamped. No policy is being broken, no rares are returned in their original form, and no one is being ripped off.

I don't think the devs would be thinking about this.

If it has a core that gives advantage in battle similar or exactly the same as the power of the original weapon is, then that's an issue. If no cores are in it, then nothing is bad about it. I wouldn't mind if an old looking rusted infernal interdictor gets released in the arcade without massive strike core.

ED is already a dress-up game since the very start of Omega. I can buy an all noob gear filled with basic weapons and still defeat players that have cool-looking items or even those with promos.
