Classes like Deathknight are really good, but are they really better when half of the spells are locked? Also classes that only cost DC in the double or triple digits are fine, just not over 500 or something.

It depends a lot on the usage. But many classes are better than the base classes. The best options for boss fights include Necromancer, Technomancer, Deathknight, Togslayer, Pirate, and EPL. Technomancer is also one of the best classes for general questing.
