Odessa Pureheart- Actually, Not Evil By Cow Face, at the Zardian e-Zine Author's Note: Warning, there are "spoilers" in the article for anyone who has not completed the Slugwrath quest chain in MechQuest. For many years, the people of Lore labored fruitlessly under the burden of a false Kingadent. Their toils were all for naught; their mecha were doomed to rust, forgotten, in the winds of time. Their hands, cracked with decades of hard labor, would come to rest by their side, each line representing only the empty rewards of oppression. The cheese on their Mecharoni pizza was burnt, and no amount of scraping could remove the black. All seemed hopeless in the sorrowful light of Slugwrath. Yet then, a blazing figure leapt forward, to strike back against these shadows: Odessa Pureheart! If one were to examine her, they would immediately notice two distinct differences between her and the late Kingadent Slugwrath. For one, their names are different. And two, she isn't evil. The latter is her distinguishing feature, the one thing she has going for her that no other King- or Queenadent has ever had. Through the centuries of rulers, it turns out that every single one until the current Queenadent has been evil. Even their names made this quite clear; I mean, "Slugwrath?" He sounds like an angry gastropod! As anyone who has ever encountered a Garden Snayle knows, that's not exactly an endearing quality. Of course, any such reformer's reign has to start on a bumpy road. Hers was being blown up by some trigger-happy fool in a mecha. Who would do that? Yet, she rose from those ashes* to launch a revolution against the evil Kingadent. Based on Lore's moon, she began a series of tactical strikes against Slugwrath, who was apparently in league with the ShadowScythe. A common factor among eyewitness accounts is that there was a G.E.A.R.S. University student among the ranks, though none of them can agree on what the student's name was, nor even whether it was a he or a she. Apparently, this student had to work their way into the confidences of the rebels, as they, in fact, were the one who had shot down Pureheart.** Some of the most tense periods of her climb to power were the ShadowScythe attacks. For a time, the ShadowScythe had the rebels trapped on Lore's moon, with the intention of an attrition to crush the rebellion. Meanwhile, on Lore, the ShadowScythe invaded various ruins in an attempt to steal the ancient technology there. To make these attacks even more dangerous, a ShadowScythe Virus was being contracted by Lore's defenders, which from what I can account, seemed to make them assist the ShadowScythe. One poignant victim of the virus was Captain Sys-Zero, a major player in the fight against Slugwrath. Fortunately, Nurse Helia of the Soluna City Hospital, with help from the mysterious G.E.A.R.S. student and Pureheart, managed to save his mind. The coup de grace of the rebellion was when the G.E.A.R.S. University student- again, under the command of Pureheart- discovered and defeated Slugwrath. I could not find any solid information about what happened after Slugwrath's defeat, but one source seems to believe that his head is somewhere in the ShadowScythe's possession. After the war, Pureheart was chosen to be the new Queenadent. She gave a rousing speech, in which she detailed the need for a new Galactic Federation and her goal to rebuild Soluna City. It was a new era for Lore; under the guidance of Queenadent Pureheart, the people had a new era of prosperity. __________ * Literally. ** "Sorry about blowing up your mecha and helping your oppressor; can I be a colonel?" Many thanks to the contributors of the MechQuest Encyclopedia!
