I was just wondering, would it be possible to increase the limit on inboxes? I'm not sure if this is a FSI or something, or if it's feasible due to bandwidth, etc., but the inbox limit seems very small.

Also, would it be possible to make it automatically save a copy of sent messages? It can be annoying when you accidentally forget to save a very important message, so surely it can't be that hard to change it, so that it always saves them but can be toggled off?

Hey,

The inbox I believe is due to database space. Certain forum groups get larger inboxes.

With the automatically save sent messages, it is possible. It's in the profile settings under "Always save PM to sent folder". And that has no PM cap :-) Mine has 1500 sent PMs in it.

We have a lot of people using the forum, giving everyone more storage space is probably not feasible as far as space for all those PMs goes. One alternative option is to go to your profile and check off "email notification of new private messages", which will send a copy of the message to your email allowing you to delete PMs from your inbox without losing them. Most email providers also have a built-in search function for quickly searching messages so it'd probably be easier to find the PM you wanted later on if you needed to find one.

You can set the forums to save sent PMs by default under your profile, just check off the "always save PM to sent folder" box.

Constructive

The reason there are a limited number of PM slots available (40 for regular members, IIRC) is because the forums aren't an email-service; you can use email for that. For example, Gmail gives you oodles of FREE space, and there is an option to save PMs to your emails as well. You could have a separate folder for holding PMs.

The forums have a HUGE amount of users, and even if each person receives just a single PM, that's a ton of space taken up; now, there are many people who receive multiple PMs, so it's even worse. It's in the interest of bandwidth that there is a limit.

Certain members have more slots (Approved Writers, for instance) because they need it.

I realized while typing that 2 others have already responded (o.0), but yes, you can auto-save Sent messages:

1. Go to "Profile" at the top right
2. Scroll AAAALL the way down until you see the "Private Message" section
3. Select the 4th option.
4. Profit!

You can also just hit CTRL+F at the same time and search for "Always save PM to sent folder"

But.. surely Sent PM's take up just as much space as recieved PM's, yet there is no cap on them. Or am I missing something here?

Sent PMs don't take up any space on the forums actually, your browser saves them in some fashion (I want to say they're cached in some way although that might not be right).

Edit: No, that's not right. I'm thinking of something else. Sent PMs are just weird.

According to our illustrious Captain Rhubarb:

The receiver is ulitmately responsible for the message space and that's why there's a limit there.

Edit: the superb Captain has increased the inbox size to sixty! Glory to the Rhubarb! :P
