Sadly, this is simply not possible logistically. Locking is a local moderator level function, and without a LOT of work for the forum coders, it wouldn't be possible to give people the power to lock their own threads without the power to lock any thread in that board, which would be very much open to abuse.

Instead, of locking the thread, the poster can simply delete the first post (which deletes the thread), right?

etching, a correction, some Q&A boards, such as the AQWQ&A, does not have the option to delete their own threads.

Chaos!

It's always recommended to leave the thread there so that people with the same question can view it etching, so deleting (in boards where that is allowed) is not a good idea xP

@Kain
Actually, other people don't often view those threads. :P
I've done so before, but I've also seen 2-4 threads asking about the assault quest in MQ all at the same time. :P

Well, I periodically peruse the AQ Q/A forum. You could not pay me enough to get me to flip to Page 2.
I agree, I seriously doubt most people are really going to scan through pages of questions to see if their question was already answered,
particularly when threads sometimes have descriptive titles such as "question" or "help me".
Maybe check the FAQ and the first page, but that's about it...

I think Sir Gnome's point is the most relevant. But as the original poster has said, it would give the AKs a relative break, but, we are there for a reason.

The main difficulty that I see occurring is that people may be given the wrong answer, and if they were to have the power to lock their own thread without the proper information then they would be given false knowledge that they would go and act on. I don't mean to say that every thread is handled this way but there would be cases here and there. A remedy to this problem would be for the AK to see the false information and then provide the original poster with the proper information within a pm or an Edit Note. But, this would take more time than just letting the thread run it's course and then that AK deciding whether to lock it or not.

I am mostly referring to the AQW Q&A because that is the Q&A Board I have spent most of my time in so I wouldn't be sure as to what the rules of the other Q&A Boards but I'm pretty sure that the above problem could happen to of the Q&A Boards.

Just realized, forumites do sort of have their own locking system, through Lock Requesting. It's the same as locking except less formal, until an AK actually comes along and locks the thread no body should be posting after that request and hence really the same principle as an actual Lock itself. In the end it's the AKs decision whether to lock or not because usually they would know the answer to the question being asked.

Other than that, the idea would be beneficent for a lot of people it's just that there are a lot of other things to consider first that would outweigh the positives of introducing the suggestion.

I believe it is fine as it is.

As has already been mentioned, posters could give false information (as is quite common in AQW Q&A) or posters may feel the need to add on to somebody elses answer or to expand on a point they have already made.

The posters asking questions may lock the thread before the get all the information they need, which as Leumas said, COULD be remedied, but doing so would take more time.

I believe AK's do a great job at locking questions when they are resolved, so i don't think any changes to the system are necessary. (I spend time in the Q&A threads of DF, MQ, AQW and Forum support, and i've seen it all working fine in all of those places.)
