Disclaimer: I realize that this may be a far cry from necessary, especially with the existance of translation websites, but I'm going to post this idea anyways. I'm more interested in the public's views on this idea at the moment, unsure whether or not this would be helpful enough. I have run into the situation a few times, where I meet AE fan-base members who can not, or have trouble speaking English. As we all know, quote:
Do not post in any language other than English. The AE Forums, while used by a diverse cross-section of the global community, are English-speaking so all posts should be submitted in English. Any instances of a foreign language should always be accompanied by verifiable translation. The AE forum staff reserves the right to remove any translations that cannot be verified by independent sources. Taken from the Comprehensive Forum Rules However there are certainly some benefits to having a single forum board in which other languages are permitted. My idea for this, at least in the early stages (growth would depend on popularity), would be a simple board in which question threads could be posted. Tags would be added into the titles to verify language that was to be used, for example: - [SP] - Spanish
- [PRT] - Portuguese
- [FR] - French
- etc.
Tags could also be added for which game/forum area the questions pertained to or there could be different boards for each game/forum area. (I.E. AQ/WF, AQW, DF, MQ, ED, Forum) This way, questions could be asked regarding the AE games which might otherwise not be available to these users. Argument #1: DN's can be posted in different languages, for example here, is a list of translated Home pages for MQ. Now I realize there are some obvious arguments here that I'd like to address quickly to expedite this process. Counter-Argument #1: Taken from the MQ Help pages: quote:
Please note, currently we can only offer email support in English. This statement, though brief and to the point, implies both that there may/will be the need for comprehensive support in other languages, and that there may be future plans or hopes for this branching. Argument #2: Moderators are needed to run boards, and bi-lingualism is a hard enough task on its own, let alone anything more than that. Counter-Argument #2 There are many forumites who are fluent, or nearly fluent in more than one language. And these skills are not kept only to the regular forum members, there are existing AK's, and surely Moderators now, who speak another language apart from English, allowing for possible input into this board. So? What are your thoughts? As I said, I realize that there are some possible downsides to this, and to gauge whether or not the good outweighs the bad, I'm looking for community oppinions on this matter. Thanks for your time! Battle on!
