Prologue

"Whooooooo...whoah!

The sounds of Dave Mustaine's snarl from the beginning of Megadeth's song "The Skull Beneath the Skin" rang through the house of Caleb "Journeyman" Wallace's California home as his iPod alarm clock went off. The twenty seven year old man got out of bed, clad only in a pair of boxers, groggily, tired and by no means ready to wake up. Little did he know this day would mark the start of the greatest adventure of his life.

Caleb walked over to his closet, stumbling, to get dressed. Before he did so, he examined his body in the mirror next to the door to his walk-in closet. He was tall, with lean but strong triceps and biceps. His pectoral muscles were firm and developed. His abdominal region was hard to the touch, but he did not have a visual "six-pack". His legs were muscular and bulky from years of track and field, baseball, and competing in marathons. His arms, legs, and torso were hairless, as he always been self-conscious of being hairy. He had no facial hair, and the brown hair atop his head was cut short. His dark green eyes were his most dominant feature, and hardly anyone he talked to could avoid complimenting them. After studying himself, he picked out his clothes for the day: a navy colored polo shirt, dark blue straight-fit jeans, a black leather jacket, and a khaki fedora, which he wore every day. He had an unexplainable attraction to it the second he saw it and has worn it almost religiously ever since.

After dressing himself, he walked over to his computer. It was a compact AlienWare laptop, which he had bought only for the alien decal on the keyboard. It was far too fancy and technically capable for what he was using it for, but he loved it just the same. After logging in, he clicked on the Firefox browser logo and typed "Gmail" into Google. He clicked on the first thing that came up, logged in, and noticed an email he had been waiting for for a while. He clicked on the title and read it:

Subject: Your First Assignment

Mr. Wallace,

Today a man by the name of Professor Norman VorRoc sent we a letter informing me that you have passed the USAA initiation and membership course and trials. As so, you will be sent on your first mission very soon. For your first mission, you will be sent to Argentina to reclaim a valuable idol from a criminal organization. Your mission will be described in greater detail when you arrive at your location. A helicopter will be sent to your home at 12:00 noon tomorrow to deliver you to your location. Ready your equipment.

This was good news. Fantastic news. The USAA, an organization run by the United States government with the purpose of locating and reclaiming stolen artifacts and other items of great value, was rumored to award upwards of half a million US dollars a mission.

With dreams success and fortune in his brain, he got his gear ready. He got his weapon of choice, a .454 Cassull caliber Tauros revolver which he was allowed to own while still living in California because of his government connections, out from a glass gun display in his room and loaded it with hollow-tip round. He put the gun into a holster, which he slid onto a weathered, decorative brown leather belt. Then he got out a small dark green backpack and loaded it with ammunition, a lighter, candles, an MRE, a pair of kevlar sleeves, a plastic canteen, and three M67 fragmentation grenades which the USAA had issued him. The rest of his day was spent waiting in anticipation for noon the next day.
