Greetings my fellow explorers of space.

Remember how magic does not work away from Lore? Well then, the mages of Lore draw the magic from the planet itself it is said.
The wizards of Lore draw the magic from the Ethereal Realm. I would like to know how you feel about this.
Surely the magic of the Ethereal Realm should be able to be called upon even in the farthest reaches of space?

Actually, magic in general need a magical planet nearby. Even one of Warlic's spells disintegrated off-planet.

I never actually understood how this worked, though, and I was curious meself...

Mayhap that magical planets/cores are reference points for one to tap into the Ethereal Realm?

Perhaps, but there's also the fact that there's actually magic IN the cores that has something to do with magic. I believe we saw how Kabak was formed when a certain pair of moglins broke through to Lore's.

PS: There's no "s" in "mayhap."

@Mordred: You must remember that the Ethereal Realm itself was built by the magical creatures of Lore. Wouldn't the Ethereal Realm be fed by all the magic that was used to build it in the first place, making the cores not a necessity any longer?

Yes, there is. But wouldn't that suggest that wizards tap into the Ethereal Realm for some reason? Perhaps the cores have limited magic, or weaker magic, or its stores of magic slowly replenish, and wizards don't want to further put strain on its upkeep. Either way, I could see wizards skipping over the cores and going on to the Ethereal Realm from there.

^Maybe not everyone can access it? Or could some have merely forgotten about the Realm entirely? Maybe when Wizard's revamped we'll know...

Well, that's Lorecentric, Dwelling Dragonlord. The Ethereal Realm wasn't just built by Lorians.

Perhaps it has something to do with those focus/focal/nexus points? They're points where our world comes closer into contact with the Ethereal Realm. We've seen that actually using them can augment magic, but perhaps vicinity to one of these is a bare necessity for magic?

@ArchMagus Orodalf: Well, I am reading the information Jackel Sano gives us. Say, wouldn't we get lectures about alien magic if aliens had a hand in the creation of the Ethereal Realm we know. Perhaps there are more Ethereal Realms out there who were created by magical races on other worlds ....

No. Garavin, in this game, is brought from the Ethereal Realm into outer space FAR from Lore and with the aid of a non-Lorian (Star Knight).

@ArchMagus Orodalf: Wouldn't that mean tapping into the magic of the Ethereal Realm is possible even away from Lore?

Yes, but only with the power of the UniForce, which doesn't work like other magic, as we've already seen and been told.

@ArchMagus Orodalf: Yet we cannot learn it ourselves?

Now then, where does the origin of Dark Madder's magic lie? She was originally from Lore, yet can command magic even in the farthest reaches of space. Just how long was she with the Nechron anyway to learn using magic away from Lore?
Would she perhaps draw her powers from the Ethereal Realm?

We did learn it. Use the Star Knight Battlesuit. Also, replay Finding Ken Benobi, since it is there that Opie-Juan says that the UniForce exists in every living thing.

If you read the description of Dark Madder's Staff, you will see that it draws its magical power from somewhere unknown. In any case, Vanatia was a supremely powerful mage. Magic isn't unusable off-planet, it's just inefficient.

@ArchMagus Orodalf: I was talking about a class to master the UniForce, not an excuse for an armour. (Imagine all the Yoda puns!)

Yoga: Luminous beings we be, yes, yes.

Yoga: Magic inefficient in space? Is that what you believe?
You: Why, yes.
Yoga: And that is why you fail.

well magic isnt useless we know the unaga dark madder and th uniforce magic all works. i figure that to use magic effectively wed need a large source of magic to break through into the ethereal realm at close range. i figure to tap into the core we need certain amounts of small power and you need a core to break into the ethereal realm.

(I hope that this isn't a "Necro-Bump", but the thread was still visible when I looked at the General Discussion page.) Dark Madder's Staff, I would assume, is hooked up manually to the ethereal Realm, or else somewhere like Lovecraft's Dreamlands, where madness and insane physical forces run rampant. As for Magic in SPAAAAAAACE! I would assume that the planets act as focal loci, bending the fabric of space and time through a secondary pull, perhaps through some sort of unknown psudo-gravitational force, and allowing a small lapse in reality, so that power can be drawn from the Ethereal Realm. The farther away that you are from one of these lapses in reality, the weaker the influx of energy from the ethereal realm is, and thus the weaker magic is. Based upon this reasoning, magic would be weakest in a mostly empty portion of space, and be strongest on a planet near to a wormhole or other such rift, as the instability allows energies and such to flow freely through reality.
