Hey!

So, uh... This thing that i'm doing. Making an animated series.
In blender. A 3D animating software. While trying to make it look as 2D as possible.
An entire series. With four seasons.
By myself.
Yeah.

I know how that sounds, pretty farfetched. One guy making an ENTIRE 3D animated series? WHAT?
Yeah, well, I am. And there's a lot to it. So... Here's the premise.

PREMISE:
The dawn of magic is upon us. Humans are acquiring the powers of the gods through means unknown to even themselves. This newfound power brings raises many questions.
What is magic? Where did it come from? Can it be controlled? Can it be harnessed? Why is it here? Why now? Is it good? Evil? Should be keep it, or be rid of it?
Consensus is: It's bad. Humans with the powers of GODS? That seems like a disaster waiting to happen. So, we keep this away from the public. Take those who have magic to camps, and try to find out how they have their magic. And then? We destroy it.

That's the premise, though our four main characters are on different terms on this premise.

CHARACTERS:
WILLOW
Age: 19
Sex: Female
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5' 6
Abilities: Wind control
Bio: Raised by an adopted family since birth, she was raised in a fairly middle class home. Trained from the age of 16 on how to use a blade, she has excelled in many different swordplay events, and hopes to challenge the Arena in one year's time, beginning her adventure to the Arena by herself. But fate has a different plan for her, blessing her with incredibly powerful magic.

OLIVER
Age: 18
Sex: Male
Hair: Black
Eyes: Dark brown
Height: 5' 6
Abilities: None
Bio: A mercenary hired by the Silver Axe, not much is know about his history.

EXPERIMENT 217
Age: 15
Sex: Female
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Startling blue
Height: 4' 6
Abilities: Unknown
Bio: Taken from her family by the Silver Axe for suspicion of magic, Experiment 217 has undergone rigorous testing over her one month stay. An excellent subject, accepting even the most invasive and vicious of tests, that of the mind, she is easily Dr. Drask's favorite patient. Odd patterns have been happening in her tests, bearing further inspection.

KRIEGER
Age: 29
Sex: Male
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Green
Height: 6' 10
Abilities: Unknown
Bio: Willingly turning himself to the Silver Axe at the beginning of their crusade, Krieger was the third to undergo blood testing. Removing copious amounts of blood from the subject renders him weak and unmoving, but bringing any unconscious creature near him causes the blood from said creature to be absorbed by him. Why this is is unknown, but tests will continue to figure out the source and intent of his hideous magic.

Please keep in mind, Willow is the only one that has a model that is (relatively) finished. The other three are subject to change physical appearance at any time. Also, names are subject to change, I AM TAKING SUGGESTIONS. Experiment 217 needs a real name eventually, and the other main Male needs a name.

Ok, so that's the story for the animation. But you aren't here for that, you want ART!
So, here we have Willow's completed (though changing) model.

Thanks for looking, and I hope you stay with me on this long (oh, so very long) journey to making an animated series.

Where's the pictures? All your links remain on the Battleon forums and I don't see any images of your 3d models.

Whoops! My bad... used a faulty link for the picture. Should work now.

Nice, you got the 2D effect down, I almost thought it was a sketch.

That means a lot! It took a long time to get this effect down, and I'm glad that it's actually working.

Nice job on the 2D effect, definitely looking forward to more progress shots and stuff. :D Your model reminds me of Mclelun's work a bit as well.

Thanks, i'm glad you like it!

Actually, i'm in the same group with Mclelun. We all do NonPhotorealisticRender, NPR, in blender. He's shown us his videos, and they're certainly helpful.

Awesome job, you nailed the cell-shaded/anime look... is it like a cell-shaded material/shader with different color gradients (skin, cloth, metal ect.) or is it like hand-painted via the model or uv's or something like that? It'd be cool to see the wire-frame I'm probably way off but that shadow to me looks more like a lighting related thing with that style looking at the shadows behind the head and under the arm. Again, could be totally off with that....keeping an eye on this place looking forward to more goodluck :D

I'm actually really bad at texturing, so everything you see here is cell shaded materials.
Here's some quick shots of the wire frame. It's pretty high poly (well... not really, but much higher than it needs to/should be), so i'm working on a second version of the model that's MUCH lower poly, now that I have more experience.

Thanks!

The image to the far left looks to have a hole under the armpit (idk if you were currently working on retopo there) looks awesome, I like how I can tell with your wire-frame what areas are going to be deforming a lot because of how much more resolution is there...always hard to find that balance can't wait for next version

I just looked at the image, and I have to agree, looks like there's a hole. Just rechecked the model and found no hole... maybe a glitch? Or maybe the pic just wasn't high rez enough... I dunno :/

Boom, double post.

So, you remember how I was supposed to retopo?
Yeah, no. Decided to just remake everything (except the hair, for now) now that I have more experience.
Retopo? Or remake everything...hmm...

MUCH MUCH MUCH lower poly on everything, and a lot less messy.

Still needs the texture on the bracers and breastplate for her emblem. Upper boot things have been scrapped, since it was a bit awkward how they were on before. If I can find a workaround, i'll put them back. Still missing the skirt and belt, gonna be put on soon. Not sure about the shoulder armor yet. I feel she needs it, but i'm not sure how rigging it would be, other than a nightmare (just like all rigging, ugh).

Gonna finish the belt and skirt when I can, along with the texture, then move back over to the new girl, with the new model.

Thanks for stopping by!

That would be an easier load for a computer to render. Is the shading supposed to be so faint on the boots, or did you not get around to texturizing them?

I think it's just the positioning of the light, but the metal material does need more shadow. I'll fix it. Thanks!

Boom, double post number TWOOOOO.

So, Willow got a new wardrobe, and possibly a second weapon.

Need some opinions. So...
1. Does the new outfit look good?
2. Is there too much brown?
3. Does the pole arm look good? Should I have her use that and the sword (interchanging) or just one?
4. I feel she needs more armor, but I'm not sure what to add... Thoughts?

Thanks!

Wow, sick!

1. Wow that's quite a difference...and yes, a welcome one...snazzy :D
2. Not IMO but I have to say there's just something that seems off when looking at the hand portion (maybe no gloves, maybe armor on the outside of the hand idk..)
3. I like it seems like it fits her style I'd go strictly pole-arm
4. If her main weapon is the pole-arm I'd keep her as is. More armor to me would be for sword ect. she's protected, but light on her feet red viper style (GoT reference)

2. Hmmm... Maybe no seams in the leather glove? I could fix that.
3. Alrighty.
4. Oh, I hope she doesn't end up the way red viper does O.O

Alright, so now onto another creation; Experiment 003's transformation, the blood beast!
Now, this is pretty rough looking, only worked on it for three hours.

That tail took a while to get it to look right. But now it looks a lot better than the rest of it, and it looks pretty lopsided quality-wise. Now, in the story, I say the back half is void dragon, and the front half is a different creature. This is going to be the case. The front half you see now is going to be changed fairly soon. More detail will be added to the blood beast's main body as well.

Thanks!

Alright, so I need help making a decision guys. Trying to find a good way to do shading.

The first is the one that I've been using; standard cell shading.

The second isn't cell shaded, but still has the anime look.

Which looks better?

I personally prefer the second one, but if you want to keep the 2d illusion, the first one suits that.

Second looks like it's going to do the trick, seems to react to light in a more favorable manner. Updates to your creature?

I want to keep the 2D appearance as much as possible, but Blender makes it difficult by simply not having enough tools for the job.

Second is currently the top voted from all those that i've asked, so it's likely going to be the final shader.

Creature? Oh yes!
Worked on it some tonight. Made the head (mostly) and experimented with color. The way the color is on right now is completely dependent on the light, though, so it's getting changed. It's there right now to help visualize the colors it will be.

Thanks for looking!
