i dont understand what are groups and how do you join them and what is a membership

A user's groups define his posting/access permissions, as well as being a "community" type thing in some cases. For example, belonging to the Debate Club lets me post there and belonging to the "ArchKnights Forum Resources" group lets me edit and delete posts in this board. For groups that can be applied for, groups that can't and group purposes, " Forum ranks, groups, and titles" is pretty handy.

As for membership, in what sense is this?

If I'm right about what you're referring to, membership of a group just means you belong to it. A user's "Group Membership" page states which groups he is a member of. If I'm mistaken, could you please clarify further?
