From what I can tell, many players accuse others of being hackers. On the contrary, they aren't. The majority of people who lose their accounts to other people are people who fall for things like "free varium" scams and "free money" scams. And they give their passwords away, so when their account is taken away, they place their blame on an imaginary scapegoat called the "hacker", when in reality, they've fallen to a "scammer".

What do you believe can ED do to prevent scammers?

Scammers are a somewhat small part of ED, but they can do some serious harm to others.

I had my first scare when someone offered me free varium, and being gullible, I gave up my password. About 3 seconds later, I realized what I had done, and changed my email (NUMBER 1 PRIORITY). Then I re-changed my password. That was a good enough wake-up call, and I never forgot it. However, to others, sometimes they may not be as smart-thinking. The lure of free varium attracts many, and those who do fall for it end up lamenting their decision.

Ergo, the suggestion is that whenever you log in, it displays a message that tells you what not to do, as in trans' words:

quote:

AQW already does it when you log in, that's what I recall so there's no reason to say no at all. Fully support it! :)

So we could have phrases such as:

quote:

"ADMIN: Remember, EpicDuel staff will never ask for your password!"

or

quote:

"ADMIN: Never give out your password to others! Remember, anybody offering free varium is a scam!"

or (The ND Mallet Guy's suggestion)

quote:

"ADMIN: No one will buy you varium for free. You're just going to get scammed and lose your account. "

~=-------------------------------------------------------------------------=~=--------------------------------------------------------------=~
And we have received somewhat-sortof-partial-halfway confirmation that we may have something implemented to help ED's players out:

quote:

Lycus:
We did actually have a message that did exactly that! I'll talk to Titan about adding it back in - though since it was removed, there may be a reason for it. I'll have to check.

Meanwhile, while we're waiting for some stuff to get implemented, I'd like all faction leaders to act on Fay Beee's advice:

quote:

I have [reminders not to give out passwords] on my faction HQ permanently. I also tell them when I go for chats.

Use the notebot in your HQ to tell everyone NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVARRRRRRRR to give out their passwords to anyone. Even their own faction leader.

As we all know, in life, there is NO such thing as a "free lunch". It's a popular phrase, and has good reason to be. Everything you do has a tradeoff. In the case of ED, the result of obtaining "free" varium is the result of your account being stolen of you, sometimes stripped away of its belongings, or just never returned (most of the time)

I appreciate the developers coming out and addressing this issue. Thanks to all those who have, so far, shown their support, like ND Mallet Guy, Trans, Lycus, and Fay Beeee :D

Scammers are not a problem. Problem are players who would do anything to get free stuff. The only thing that ED can do is educate those players.

To rephrase it, I think Scammers are the root of the problem. IF ED banned all the scammers, you think there'd be any more stolen accounts? Possibly, but much less.

^Do you think there'd be any more stolen accounts if people weren't naive/stupid? Possibly, but much less.

There will always be scammers, but if people don't fall for scamms the number of scammers would decrease.

Or... ED can just make an IQ test upon registration and only those who pass can create an account...

If you're dumb enough to fall for that kind of stuff, you deserve to be scammed. Harsh but true.

Education is always the best answer, and yes there will always be those who pray on the weak as well
as those who are a bit on the naive side. In life sometimes people have to learn a few hard lesson.
What I do is simply report them, when someone make any suggestion about varium, but remember
there are a lot of younger player that play this game and they fall first by the lure of free varium.

Inconceivable!

Unfortunately, some of our players are very young and naive. In AQWorlds, despite login messages not share your password, preventative measures like censoring your password in chat, and reminders that staff will never ask for your password, players still regularly give away their account information.

I agree with you that the account safety reminder upon login is useful, but it's not an end-all to the problem. More experienced player should always report scammers whenever you see them. Don't let newer player fall prey to them.

People in 2v2 and even 1v1 try to scam me all the time, asking me to give them my username and password so they can obtain me varium, yet the funny thing is I don't need any varium at all currently

I have an idea, make it so you can only login (including master account) on the computer you regularly use. If you go on a different computer then an email will be sent to youwith a code allowing you to go on the 2nd computer. Finally in the email it will tell you that no one will give you free varium and staff members won't ask for your account info.

Not a good idea, an IQ test measures how fast your brain can calculate things not how much common sense you have...also zman's idea is awesome IMO

Zman that might work but I can see a few little things that might make it difficult.

You lose your computer. (crashed)
You forget your email address.
You have also given them your email address.

what if you're 50-50 on 2 pc's (1 pc, but 2 different internet connections) like me, or what if you change from 1 internet connection to another while you're playing?

last but not least: scammers will just ask for your email loging as well.

I am just curious as to how people fall to scams like
"Lets Trade Mans!"
I mean , how oblivious can you be ?
I think the general player base should be educated on scammers and such

Just make a new account and give them the info, if that account gets hacked, you know they are a scammed :), if they buy you varium, you just got yourself free varium xD

^ Well a lot of players either do not know how to do this, do not have permission or an a little young to try it. These are the ones that need educating / protecting.

What if the ED Team implemented "security pin" which would be unique for everyone and consisting of numbers and letters. The pin would be required to change password and email on your Master Account which is linked to ED as well. That pin would be sent to your e-mail and you would have to write it down, but if you forget it then there's few options how to get it back;
- Confirm it's your account: Transaction #ID, your I.P. (send mail to Help Team proving it's your only IP and let them check it), prove by security questions/past passwords/etc

The pin would also be required to change security questions so unless they had the pin which is on your email (so hacking your email as well), they cannot change anything on your account but play on it. You would have the power to change security question, password, email, and so on. This would work out pretty well really, scamming would still happen but in form of selling your items at most unless they get your email.

Thoughts? :3

But not a bad idea.

Sure it is, but it gives you full control over the account due to your own pin which they cannot get unless they hack your email account. You'd just suffer from loss of items at most if you fell for the scammer's trick.
But it'd be just much lengthier process to change password and email on your Master Account, but let's face it - how often would you change them anyway? xD

There are some pretty good suggestions and I believe ED is doing everything it can to protect all of us.
I like both zman 2 and trans idea. Let us all remember it is all of our responsibility to report people who
makes offers of free varium and it is good to see that there are many here that try and live by the golden rule. :-)

In generally speaking a predator will prey on the sick, the weak and the easy, will we never completely
stop scammer, or completely educate those young ones we are trying to protect. We all know the conditions
that has allowed this to happen (wining at all cost) instead of enjoying the game and maybe build some relationship
along the way. I think I like what one poster said about posting a message on their faction board. I will now do
the same with my faction "Without Wax" and for the young who read and might ask what does that mean it is
a very old way of saying Authentic or Sincere. ED maybe you can steer younger or newer member to good but proven faction
who would take the time to mentor the ones who come behind them. Thanks
