Could you make a function in here where we could be notified whether or not someone quoted us, responded to any of our threads, and let us know if anything related to us are talked about.
Similar to Facebook with "_____ tagged you in this post" except it would be "______ quoted you".

And yes I know a solution to this is to just PM each other. But thats not the case. It's just that I think when someone quotes something we said and comments on it, we should at least know why they did so or what he/she has stated about what our posts.

That is all. Thanks.

quote:

whether or not someone quoted us

That seems impossible.

quote:

responded to any of our threads

I think it's likely that you check these threads anyway, so you'd know.

quote:

let us know if anything related to us are talked about.

That seems as impossible as the first.

The forums aren't Twitter/Facebook, which is why AE/a lot of AE Staff have social network pages.

And if you really want to know every instance in which you're mentioned, you can use the existing Forum Search function.

Well I didn't mean exactly like Facebook or some other social network site, that's not even close to the point I'm trying to state here. What I'm stating is that when I saw this one forum site, it notifies its forum users whether or not someone quoted them, and it got me thinking: AE Forums should have that. Remember the saying: "If he can do it, you can too"?

It's simple really. When someone quotes a post, the quote should say who it was from "@Bob" and Bob would be notified that someone quoted his post.

When I mean related to us, I'm not saying vague descriptions of us. I meant if we were mentioned in any way like "@Bob: _______"

I have tried the Forum Search function, but it doesn't really help at all. When I tried searching for both our forum names, it says it's not specific enough to complete a search or there is no matching record.

@other forum thing: I don't think this forum has the functionality, and trying to code it would take the already forum coders aeons.

The AE forums used to have the Quote function ( ), but it was disabled a few years back due to the large amount of quite-pyramid spam (quoting quotes within quotes). Clicking the button would automatically quote the post and also add a line: "ORIGINAL: <poster name>". The moderating team felt that copying the message and adding the quote tags manually would have the same effect and yet would not encourage quote pyramiding.

As for notifications, I doubt post-specific notification would be allowed (or could be coded) if even thread-specific subscription is disabled.

@Below: The first part of this post was in response to what you posted: 'When someone quotes a post, the quote should say who it was from "@Bob"'.

@Z: that doesnt tell me anything about whether or not my suggestion could be fulfilled (except for the last part)
@Orodalf: oh poop to the coding.
I really like this suggestion because it helps us at least know what is currently going on about ourselves in the forums.
Thanks anyways.

Ideally it would be a very nice feature, but like Orodalf and Z said I don't really think it can be done... Your best bet is a mix of the search and looking through your past posts using your profile. Searching for "Perry" and "@Perry" should pop up anything you're mentioned in (and if it says there's no matching record it means you haven't been mentioned :P), and in case they didn't use your name you should just manually check through any threads you care about. It's not perfect, but it's really your only option (and it really shouldn't be that bad in the long run, unless you post dozens of times a day you won't have too many threads to look through). I for one would be for the return of the quote button -- it really facilitates back-and-forth discussion and I know there exists code to automatically strip any nested quotes, removing the pyramid issue -- but even without it, you should be able to keep track of anyone mentioning you.
