This is more a factor of the scenario of 'you are super popular, you have a lot of mail, to the point that you really have to search through, you also have a lot of people that start their name with '.' or '...' and you also do not exactly know how many '.'s there are, so you can simply type in 'samurai' and it will come up with '...Samurai...' and no one else unless someone else has the word 'Samurai' in their name.'
Not sure if the above makes sense, since I had a hard time phrasing it! But in simpler terms, there are a lot of people who have '.'s or letters at the starts of their name and it is hard to remember how many of them there are, some people use one '.' others use 4 or 5 and if you have quite a lot of people with '.'s in their name, you would have a hard time finding them. However most people tend to have a word in there such as the above example of '...Samurai...' and it means you can simply type in that word and it works. Instead of you typing '.' in and it comes up with 7 peoples PMs that all have names starting with '.' and possibly having to guess how many it includes, whether it is 'Xx.Angel.xX' or .XxAngelxX.' or whatever you can type in 'Angel' or the word you know and find just them...
May still not make complete sense, but that is the logic behind it - if people feel it is annoying and do not like it how it is now, changing it to how you suggested could possibly be looked into.
