Hello everyone After years of playing the games its nice to join the community. I have loved role playing for a long time now but never found many people who could enjoy my style of stories. If you have any advice on starting a story or the best way to go about rp,ing without being to OP or to underpowered but doing it right id love the advice. Id like to be a big part of this community it seems to be full of fun people who think like i do . So! If you would like to help a fellow adventurer out please id love the input :) .

Welcome to the boards, hope you enjoy your stay.

To avoid being OP, I remember an RPer talking about his method of balance, which is essentially when you're writing your characters powers and think of a weakness, don't add in something to make you immune to it. Ex:

You want Bob to have ice powers, and you give him an ice wall, ice blast, and ice shield. You realize that fireball could easily destroy him, don't add in an ability against fire, let it be a weakness.

Also just common sense for balancing, really.

It's all related to experience. There's no way for me to tell you "X is too strong" or "Maybe Y could be buffed up a little."

Now as for concrete advice...I have that.

First, when you're writing up your list of skills and abilities, keep it modest. For most characters, you're going to be fine with their weapon and their fighting style, and maybe 1-2 interesting powers they have access to, such as short-range blinks or the ability to light their sword on fire. For mages, I would suggest at least 1 innate ability and 3-5 spells, since you're going to want to be able to change things up. Anything more than 6 abilities for any character is going to mean you won't use everything - there are exceptions to this rule but not anything a beginner RPer would have to think about.

Example: A water mage who has hydrokinesis (ability) and the spells Turn Into Water, Hydro Jet, and Geyser. They should be fairly interesting in combat - this mage will generally rely on her hydrokinesis to fight, slinging water around to attack, and use her spells to conjure water to use or evade attacks. Mages are tricky and not terribly good for beginners but I was dead set on being magical when I first started and you may be too.

DO NOT write any ultimate attacks. You won't use them.

DO write simple, fun things that you can visualize your character doing. This will bring you the greatest enjoyment in RPing.

The other extreme you can go to when writing your character is to be too weak for the RP. Newbies almost never have this problem, though. It's all about those ULTIMATE ATTACKS and BECOMING A DEMON and INSTANT KILL BUT AT THE COST OF HIS FINANCIAL SECURITY. However, if you are looking at this character compared to the other characters in the RP and thinking, "Man, they seem a lot more powerful than me..." it's perfectly okay to add in a little extra oomph to their existing abilities. Don't add more abilities - that will quickly and inexplicably drive your character from "weak" to "ridiculous," at least on paper - but maybe his electrical sword could stand to have a little extra something so that people remain wary of it. Maybe let electricity arc off it at his command for painful shocks even if he misses or it gets blocked.

Currently we don't have any "boring" RPs, but you're welcome to try out Yulgar's Inn and see if it spins off into something more to your taste (SORRY KOOROO I WILL PUT MY YI THING UP S.O.O.N. I PROMISE). The Elemental Championships is always fun, but it caters to more advanced RPers so you should probably talk to the AKs before attempting to join just to make sure your ducks are all in a row.

Thanks guys i appreciate all the input . Its generally just creating a story with other like minded people , will take some time to get used to having other people write the story with me XD. I hope to eventually have a Dragon Riders Rp go down been a desire of mine for a long time now . For the advice that was very helpful basically your saying not to try and take so much on in the beginning cause you have to keep track of everything you say as the story goes on .Small steps i can do that . I actually read a lot of Yulgarrs inn last night i enjoy the way y'all write that in its own was very helpful.

Biggest piece of advice I can give a very simple one - Read.

I find the biggest issue is people not really paying attention to what is posted in the ic or ooc and then wondering what to do.

Over power or underpower is not a big deal if the gm keeps their head in the game and sets out clearly what they expect from those joining the rp. I have run rps with humans that have no skills and those with everyone playing a god. Long as you make your wishes clear and they listen you shouldn't have an issue.

If it becomes an issue, never be afraid to tell them to change something. A good rper wants a good over all rp. And again this boils down to actually reading the to. If you find yourself as a gm and having to coach the rper through every post there is a problem.

A good idea is to check out the other bios your fellow players have posted. You can use those as reference to determine how strong/weak your character can be. Don't make them ultimate-supreme, but don't make them ultra-weak either. Make them 'adequate'. After a few bios you'll find that niche. It's not something to be concerned about really. Typically, you want to use strategy, thinking, and common sense to 'win' things.

Know what metagaming, bunnying, and godmodding is. It's not cool to say you shot a bolt of lightning at someone and stunned them; you simply say you shot your lightning bolt at the, and if it hits then it will probably stun them. The opposer would then use his or her own common sense to determine the effectiveness. If you have problems with that, get with the GM. Bunnying means you're trying to control someone else's character; never decide what another character is doing. Finally, don't metagame. Metagaming is letting your character know something they should not, or being omniscient: "Kaii suddenly felt an urge to turn around, knowing someone was there in the darkness"; see? Kaii has no reason to believe anyone is there in the darkness, and there's no real reason to have an urge. Now if that person said they made a noise or something, that gives you permission.

Also, use originality. Don't make a Spartan warrior, for example. It's okay to use inspiration, but make sure you put your own spin on things to make it original.

If you're planning on GMing, maybe join a RP as a participant to see how it works first. Like they say, you must follow before you can lead. Make sure you plan things out too. That's very important, as you need to make sure the RP is cohesive and makes sense, and fits a specific theme or plot.
