Daily Quests Are Here!

Hey there, heroes!

Unfortunately, Dove had a personal emergency today, and so this week's quest release, the finale for The Nest quest line, has been postponed. We currently do not know if we will be able to release the quest this weekend.

But never fear, we still have a release today! Introducing: Daily Quests!

Starting today, a button has been added to the Book of Lore. The Daily Quest button in the bottom left corner of the Book of Lore will send you on a random quest. Upon completion of the quest, you will earn 3 Dragon Coins!

This bonus can be obtained once per day per character.

Ballyhoo is now no longer accessible. Thank you for your service, Ballyhoo!

Also, the Lost Starswords will be leaving with next week's release!

There's also been a minor update to Book 3's End of Magic storyline.
  • Cinquefoil's "What's next" dialogue has been adjusted to direct the player to Ash in Book 3 Falconreach.
  • Ash's "Sulen'Eska" option has been renamed "The Vind", and Ash will now direct the player to Betrubung Swamp.
  • Ash will now have a ! marker when The Vind option is unlocked. Select The Vind option to get rid of it.
  • Sielu's dialogue has been rewritten, and is no longer needed to make sense of the story.
  • Halda will no longer let players who have not talked to Ash about The Vind pass into Sulen'Eska (unless you've completed the first Sulen'Eska quest already, in which case you can still enter).
  • Halda's dialogue has been changed, referencing Ash instead of Sielu, as well as other minor changes.

That's all for now! Unfortunately, we're unsure if this week's planned quest release will be able to be released this week. Keep an eye on Twitter if you want to stay updated.

A decade is sadly not an exaggeration... 3 DCs per day barely makes up to 1100 in a year! It would be pretty cool if completing them consecutively each day would grant more Dragon Coins, like, a cap of 15 or so?

I like that we can earn DCs daily: however, I feel that the quests feel tedious and drawn out. I'd much rather have a single battle with a mini-boss style mob, or even a titan in DragonRider armor. Or simply give a single DC for all quests... Just ideas.

I feel that 3DCs per day is extremely generous; it's far more than Ballyhoo has been giving recently (on average) and it's reliable, not dependent upon the RNG. Frankly, I was expecting it to be more like a ten percent chance of a single coin each day. Dragon Coins correspond to real money and we're lucky to be able to get them for free at all. In a couple of months, I'll finally be able to afford a DC armor if I want one and a single year of coins is enough for a couple of bag slots (or ten for new players).

Regarding the quests, they're supposed to be random, so some will be a boss fight, some exploration, some story driven. If you find some of them tedious, perhaps tomorrow's will be more to your liking. Hopefully I won't draw too many Inn challenges or thousand room dungeons when I'm playing. Anyway, picking particular quests (or writing new ones specially for the feature) would take time away from developing the game, so I don't think most players would regard it as a priority.

@gloccus: Actually, I did the math, and you'd earn 180 DCs every 2 months.

But even so, the fact that it's consistent more than makes up for it being slow!

@gloccus:
I have no complaints about 3 DC per day, nor am I saying a side-feature such as this should have unique quests. I wa stating that a mini-boss would seem to be more in line with the concept. Yes, DCs represent real $$, but they average out to a value of 4/10 of a cent in value, meanwhile Z-Tokens are worth nearly the same but players have a chance of randomly earning some with every battle. Averaging around 50 a day. Spending the time required to slay a mini-boss versus a random quest that can take 15 - 20 minutes seems more appropriate for 1.2 cents in monetary value to me. Howver, that's just my 1.2 cents.

Note: Almost all AE in game currencies bought by $$ average out to about 4/10 of a cent, except Soul Gems (which average out to a value of 23 cents each.)
Note 2: All values calculated using USD.

@Demistic
That's how it usually is in games. Real money is usually easier to earn relative to its converted in-game counterpart in most games to incentivize giving money to the developers. Time doesn't pay the bills, after all.

While AQ does make earning Z-tokens much easier, especially with house interest, Z-tokens are also comparatively much less valuable. A level 143 item in AQ (endgame item) costs 5940 Z-tokens. An endgame item of DF costs a few hundred DCs. Even DC classes only cost 1,800 DCs. The single most expensive item is the Storybook Collection for 5,000 DCs, which is usually half-price during Black Friday. The greatest money sinks are bank and bag slots past the first 15, and those are blatantly luxuries. The games cannot be directly compared in this way. I'd actually argue that DF is too generous with its USD to DCs conversion rate, considering the relatively low costs of most items. As you said yourself, DCs cost around the same as Z-tokens, but DCs have greater value than Z-tokens.

It is true that time doesn't pay bills, but overly tedious side-features that provide marginal benefits can cost money by causing boredom. DCs are very valuable in-game, and I agree DF is being very generous by offering 3 DCs. However, I feel that doing a random quest can become tedious, and potentially boring. I've been around DF since the start, and I ground out my first 27 levels on my alt account when there were no baby dragons and no story quests after getting to town, so I know tedium. AQ and DF are niche type games. They are fun and well made, but can't truly compete when compared to AAA mmorpg titles. I love AQ and DF, and have been returning to them for nigh 20 years. However, both games have a notorious burnout rate where players grow bored with repetitive activities. I'm just hoping to mitigate that a bit to make this loss-leader a bit more effective to the less than devotee level players.

You can reroll the quest until you get a short one.

I really like how this Daily Quests turned out to be. Looks really good for free and new players.

@Demistic it isn't fair to compare a free-player flash game to a AAA mmorpg titles. Of course they cannot compete and it is stupid to even compare them or even think that DF should do like they do. Let it do it's own thing, it works well enough Quality over quantity. Having to do random repetitive quests to get DC might be tedious for you, but it also means that all players can finish them without too much trouble, were you lvl 5 non-DA or lvl 90 DA.

All games, be they AAA mmorpgs, a f2p MUD, or DF itself all compete for two very important and finite commodities. A player's time and a player's money. Stupid or not, most players will spend their time and money on the game that fulfills their desires the most thoroughly with the least amount of boredom incurred. Like it or not, DF and all AE products compete with AAA titles, and must be compared in the facets at which they overlap. Player incentive-to-work ratios are such a place. Artix Entertainment's greatest strength has always been the engagement of its customers, I was simply offering my opinion on how to keep said engagement as broad as possible.

Now, before I turn this into a 20 page dissertation on the effects of boredom and economics on independent games, I will take my leave. We're pretty far afield from this thread's purpose anyways.

Almost all of the quests in the pool should be completable in under a minute or two and it seems like you just got really unlucky and just got a long one.
It's also been said that the current quest pool is preliminary and will be ironed out in the future; this release is likely just a test to see if the new system even works.

This is also way better than the system it replaced (Ballyhoo) in every single way and I don't understand how someone could see it as anything but an improvement.
