Most online games today still remove items from the availability. They usually call it Legacy items. It just doesn't happen as often as AE games because they are typically larger scale. You may not see it as a bad thing but there are many that will see it as a slap in the face if the items we have that pretty much show how long we have been playing are freely available to everyone. There's already far fewer items going Perma Rare than there used to be. Frostval items are the only ones that are guaranteed to never return. Well, them and some of the token package bonuses. Throwing the "Legendary" tag on it is nowhere near the same. For me, the items that I have that are "Legendary" tagged reminds me constantly that I used to have something special but now anyone can get it. Just because other games do it doesn't make it good game design. It's equally damaging when other games do it too. Other games that do this often limit these types of items to cosmetics only. AQ does not. And if the issue is that the value of these items comes from showing how long you've been playing, that is no reason to also time-lock the functionality of the item. I'm sure people have suggested releasing clone versions of important rare items that mimic functionality under a different name and artwork. I think it's short-sighted of the staff to have never considered doing that. Heck, they could lock such items behind MTX tokens if they really wanted to preserve the value of paintings or whatnot. As much as releasing the functionality of older build and equipment would be a "slap in the face" for players wanting to restrict them to newer players, it's even more of a "slap in the face" to newer players to join the game, excited to try it out, and then be denied a surprising amount of rare items that could otherwise act as gap fillers, or build options, or outright game-changing equipment. It's disheartening for a new player to look at a recommended list and see far too many of the top options as unavailable simply because they are rare. Why should your feelings be prioritized over theirs? This game has lost too many players over the years. We need new blood to survive in the long term. If this game goes down, so will all the rare items that you've kept exclusive in your inventory over the years. Everyone loses. While less items are being made rare nowadays, many still are, and many of the rare items that are released are significant to modern builds. It's honestly a huge waste to see the staff put so much effort in developing certain items with unique functions, and then immediately turn around and make those same items permanently unavailable. It's just not a good use of AQ's extremely limited development team to work on an update that will fail to have a permanent effect on the game. I actually have all the rare items I currently want for my build, and I'd be fine with if their functions, or even their actual items were to be made available again. I don't know if there's ever been any kind of poll, but most players seem to be rather apathetic about the possibility of re-releasing either rares or rare clones, and that the people yelling loudest to stop that from happening are increasingly becoming a shinking vocal minority that the staff has catered to.
