The following is an abbreviated biography of my AQW character, Jaelle! I hope you enjoy reading about her as much as I enjoyed writing her backstory! -.^

Please post any commentary here!: In the Beginning... (Discussion Thread)

P.S. If you would like to be fully immersed in your reading, here are some tunes that would be appropriate for the setting: Cue the Music!

In the beginning…

Jaelle was born from the unique and rather rare union of a human mother and Celestial father. Both cherished their daughter and would strive to raise her with not only the best of care but also build her strength of character, as they both well knew that she would shoulder heavy responsibilities later in life. She was raised in the sacred city of Raeaura, a place unmapped even by Lore’s most meticulous cartographers since very strong light magic kept it well hidden. Though protected by the light of the Celestials, Raeaura was still a place inhabited primarily by mortals who especially admired and worshipped the heavenly beings.

For the most part, in her early years, Jaelle did not see much of Lore outside of the safe bubble that was Raeaura. She was trained in the arts of diplomacy and combat by a prominent local angel named Tamar, who had been a close friend to her father and was his most experienced battlemage. Tamar was a full Celestial who chose to train Jaelle in the Divine Garden at the city’s center. No mortal was allowed access to the garden during such times; Tamar, like many other Celestials, often did not wish to be seen by mortal eyes. She only manifested herself to Jaelle. Though training was rigorous, Jaelle persevered, determined to be as good as any full-spirited Celestial despite her inherited humanity. Many times, Tamar reminded her that humans had their strengths despite their flaws, but Jaelle was quite indifferent about that for a long time. Even now, it remains somewhat of a sensitive subject for her.

In time, Jaelle progressed, transforming into a gracious diplomat and zealous fighter for justice. She advanced ranks within the Celestial guard and did her best to ensure peace and order were maintained. However, as the threat of Chaos blossomed all over Lore, many Celestials felt that some action needed to be taken to restore the balance of both Good and Evil. The sentiment especially grew stronger after Sepulchure’s death and his rival, King Alteon, was stricken with a chaotic illness. Eventually, Jaelle’s father bestowed upon his beloved daughter a most important and difficult assignment: she was commanded to leave the city and roam Lore to help extinguish the flames of Chaos and Evil that ran rampant. At first, she was overwhelmed by such a weighty task and sad to leave her home, but she soon understood that none of her abilities and training meant anything if she could not use them for the good of all in Lore. So she promptly ventured out into the vast lands beyond the city gates.

A Pure Heart Broken

After traveling for some time, Jaelle ended up within the walls of the grand fortress of Swordhaven. For a foreign settlement, she was quite impressed by the Swordhaven castle that loomed tall over the land like a beacon of hope to those who settled there, despite the gravity of the situation. She kept her divine origins a secret, blending into the world of mortals, or at least tried her best to. It didn’t take long for her to be recruited by the castle after voluntarily ridding their region of certain dangers. She rose in ranks to paladin after choosing to sharpen her skills with the sword as well as magic.

It was thanks to a more experienced knight that she could well handle the tricks to swordsmanship. His name was Sir Red Frostdragon; Red was his preferred nickname. For reasons not yet known, he took it upon himself to aid this fair maiden warrior with her quests, often giving her helpful advice regarding swordplay and even explaining things about the land they were in. Each time she listened to Red talk about how things worked in the mortal world of Lore, her eyes were opened to things she’d never before considered. She very easily took a liking to him as they talked and battled Chaos and Evil together. It was hard for her not to fall in love with him. He was amiable and kind, and he had a sort of roguish charm. For a time, it seemed the feeling was equally reciprocated.

But there was one thing that bothered her...so one day, she approached Red and discussed the matter with him. In their private discussion, she revealed her background and true self to him, not wishing to keep such things a secret with the one she cherished. Initially, he was very surprised and took it well enough. However, over time, things somehow seemed to change between them. He appeared less and less by her side and spoke less and less to her person, though remaining cordial. It was as if a great chasm had split between them after a while, and Jaelle could not understand why his behavior had so suddenly changed towards her.

Eventually, she found an opportunity to approach him about it, and after pouring her heart out to him, he finally gave her a simple, yet tragic confession: he could not love an angel; For him, she was on a pedestal that was too high a climb. Red stated he loved her, but it was not in the way she wished. She tried desperately to explain that she was only partly angelic, but it made little difference to him. As a devout knight, he did not feel it was his place to go down that path with her. Having been crushed in heart, for the first time, Jaelle wished to be fully human more than ever. And from then on, she felt more of the division that was within her.

It was not long after that, that Sir Frostdragon was charged to lead troops into battle as the war between Nulgath and Dage the Evil emerged. His campaign took him far, far away from Swordhaven to an uncharted realm of Lore, and since that time Jaelle has heard no word of his fate.

A Golden Opportunity

Despite her downed spirits, Jaelle mustered the drive to move forward with her important mission. She had heard rumors of Aranx (the Guardian Archangel and leader of all Celestials) and his mysterious decision to aid Dage the Evil in the war against his ex-mentor, Nulgath. Although this decision seemed to mystify many of the other Celestials at the time, Jaelle decided to investigate further. She exercised more of her diplomatic prowess by fulfilling favors for both sides of the Evil War if only to keep things from escalating too much that could potentially devastate Lore.

After doing what she could as far as the Evil War was concerned, Jaelle wound up in the town of Battleon. She rented a room in Yulgar’s Inn for a short period, and it was during her brief stay in Battleon that something interesting happened.

It was a chilly Frostval morning when Jaelle stepped out of Yulgar’s one day. She was immediately greeted by the colorful display of lights that glittered and hung cheerfully from the branches of the giant Frostval tree planted in the middle of Battleon Town. Such a festive sight should have left her feeling awed and in a blissful mood, yet there was still the void of love lost ever since Sir Frostdragon’s departure from her life. She went out for a walk to think thoughts and ponder over the next step in her mission. She walked past the edge of town and ended up in a very secluded, quiet part of the eastern Greenguard forest. However, the quiet did not last for very long.

A shrill cry for help rang out, and with hurried steps, Jaelle sped in the direction of where the voice came from. She soon stumbled upon two nasty-looking Sneevils and in the clutches of one, there was a helpless, winged golden Moglin. To her horror, she noticed that the poor creature was also injured; it appeared that one of the Sneevils had cruelly bitten and taken a sizable chunk out of one of its ears. It didn’t take very long for the pair to sniff her presence out, not that she was hiding. They both faced her with grotesque leers, but the one holding the Moglin snarled, “You’re awful dumb for coming here, girly. Better get lost before we make you regret being here.” As the contemptuous creature threatened Jaelle, he flashed a rusty dagger at her.

Filled with pity for the creature they held captive along with righteous indignation, Jaelle glared at them. She trembled, and her intense emerald eyes flared brightly as she conjured a blue ball of fire in one hand. “Ah, so you think me a mere mortal girl, do you?” She spared no more words as the ball of flames left her hand and speedily traveled in the lead Sneevil’s direction, landing a direct hit and making a fiery spectacle of his face. He howled in pain, immediately dropping the fainted Moglin on the ground to clutch his scorched face. Mortified, his companion cowered before her. She then demanded, “Now, you get lost - before I rid Lore of your wretched lives once and for all.” Needless to say, the Sneevils were quite speedy to do as she commanded.

Jaelle likewise was quick to pick up the hurt Moglin and take it back to her room at Yulgar’s in Battleon Town where she did what she could to heal its injured ear. She even made a special trip to the Apothecary’s shop in town to retrieve medicines and a few healing potions. To her relief, the creature (whose name turned out to be Midas) did recover. When he came to his senses, naturally the little Moglin attached himself to her, choosing to be her loyal and very dear companion, and he vowed to never leave her side in all her adventures to come. It was thanks to this encounter with her new best friend, Midas that Jaelle found it easier to heal her own heart over time.

Dawn of Destiny

During the events that followed, Jaelle made many more friends throughout the seasons. Indeed, some even lasted for only a season or so, but the experiences she shared with other adventurers always seemed to leave her wiser and more determined than ever to pursue her chosen path. There was always the chance of meeting old friends again and forging new friendships along the way. The very idea thrilled her as she toured all of Lore, stamping out more flames of Chaos and Evil that arose.

There soon came that fateful day, when Drakath’s reign came to an end and a new, horrific threat stepped from the shadows - the Queen of Monsters. Seeing the thinned angelic forces as vulnerable at the time, she sent a powerful minion and his horde of beings called Infernals to tear open a portal and invade their sacred land - exposing the Celestial Realm to the rest of the world and subsequently, Raeaura as well. With this new enemy wreaking havoc among them, and on their own turf at that, Jaelle was swiftly recalled home to help defend the ethereal world she held dear. With many of her brethren taken captive, Jaelle did all she could to free as many as possible. It greatly humbled and warmed her heart to see the famous Hero of Lore (and the once legendary, Eternal Dragon of Time) willing to join the desperate plight to save the Celestial Realm too. Completing quest after quest to loosen the grip of the Infernals upon their world, the allying Hero succeeded in driving most of them out and was appropriately rewarded the power to cast celestial light magic as a Lightcaster after demonstrating much bravery and skill.

Though the gaping portal could not be completely shut, overall, Jaelle was relieved that the darkness had at least been ousted from its tactical advantage over their realm. Since then, she has been elected as Sub-governor of Raeaura, and up until now, she continues to aid all in the world of Lore who wish for peace and Goodness to reign, welcoming both friends and allies from its farthest corners.
