Location: Travel Map » Sail East (twice) » Deren » Deren Castle » Up (3 times) » Library » Visit Nel! » Train as a Scholar!
Must be level 10 or higher

Train with Nel the Moglin to learn the ways of the Scholar. abilities such as Orcish Tactics, Dragon's Might, and Gogg's Gift can be yours!

First Quest

In the land of Deren there lives a learned Moglin named Nel whose vast knowledge might actually save the world. Study with Nel and become a Scholar, and perhaps you too can change the course of history!

Nel: Welcome friend! I am glad to see you here. It is good to know someone else values the act of learning as much as I.
Nel: Before I can reward you with the Scholar's Robes, I ask that you go on your first quest of learning.
Nel: Visit Greenguard Forest and observe a tribe of warlike orcs to study how they use their weapons. Be careful: they do not enjoy being watched, and are quick to anger.
Nel: Take these healing potions. Good luck, friend!

*Greenguard Forest*

You: Well, here I am. There are all kinds of orc footprints all over the place, so I'm sure more will be along soon. I'll...

Choice:

  • ...wait for them behined this bush and observe them in secret.
  • ...follow the footprints and see if I can find a camp or village. Maybe they'll teach me openly.

...wait for them behined this bush and observe them in secret

You: *yawn* Almost night and no Orcs yet. Where ARE they??
You: Wait! Here comes one now! I'll just sit back and observe-- Oh no! He's coming this way!!
You: Is he...Is that a newspaper? No way. I signed up to study their combat, not their hygiene!
    You: Aaaaah!!
    Fnorc the Orc: Aaaaah!!
    You: Aaaaah!!
    Ambush Jr.: Aaaaah!! *FLEE*

...follow the footprints and see if I can find a camp or village. Maybe they'll teach me openly.

You: Ah, found a camp! Maybe if I greet them in Orcish I'll impress them, make friends, and they'll teach me something, let me get my dictionary out...
You: *A very messy sentence in the Orc language*
M'Orc: Grr! I will see you DEAD for saying that about my mother! Come, my tribesmen!
You: Did I say mother?? I meant FROGZARD LEGS... that we should eat Frogzard legs together! oops...

    Nel
The life of the Scholar must be one of both solitude and action.

    What is a Scholar?

Nel: Solitude is needed to study and then reflect upon what one has stuidied.
Nel: Action is needed for the Scholar to go out and uncover the secrets of the world and help others learn them.
Nel: If an individual does not embrace BOTH solitude AND action, then that person cannot be a true Scholar.

    Nel's Shop:

    Armors

  • Explorer's Outfit

    Miscellaneous

  • Book of Love
  • Necronomoron

Nel: Find the Scholar's Robes and other items in my shop!

    Second Quest

Nel: Enter a cave to study a Zeel firsthand. Learn how its skin absorbs attack damage. Bring back its hide any way you can, so that you may line your robes with it.
Nel: Be careful: Zeels are very resistant to attacks, so collecting that hide may take a while. Take a few healing potions to be safe.

    *Underground*

You: Well, according to "Bariel's Bestiary", zeel tracks look like big lizard tracks.
    You: ...............
You: All of these tracks in the ground, and NONE of them make any sense. I'll never find the right kind!
Dwakel: Perhaps because those are cracks. There isn't much that leaves a track in HARD STONE. But you'll find plenty of zeels when you meet all those already sent to the Reaper.
    Dwakel: INTRUDER!!!

Nel: Take a few healing potions to be safe.

    *Darkovia*

You: Well, while I'm waiting I guess I should read up on them.
You: According to Rudy Von Richter's "Shadowslayer's Guide to Lycanthropy," werewolves are a lot stronger and faster than normal people.
You: Hmm... superhuman strength and speed... able to heal most wounds... moon phases, yadda yadda yadda...
You: ...uh oh. Keen senses of hearing and *gulp* smell...
    You: ............ *sniff*
You: I knew I should have braved the Shower Monster in Yulgar's Inn this morning.

Nel: You must remain very alert or you could be its next victim. Take a few extra healing potions just in case.

    *Castle in Darkovia*

You: Well, I'm in. HOW those guards fell for the garlic dipping sauce with their meal, I'll never know...
You: Von Ritcher really knows his stuff. I'll have to keep this "Shadowslayer's Guide to Bloodsuckers" handy.
You: Now to just find a place to watch the master of the cas....OOH, he has a LIBRARY!

    *Inside the Library*

You: Soooo many books, I'm not even sure which ones I want to look through first! I'll just pick one at random...
Master of the Castle: Well, when you've lived as long as I have, you tend to accumate quite the collection.
Master of the Castle: Unfortunately for you, your mortality rate just spiked. Guards! Deal with this intruder! I'll be in my sitting room.
Guard: There! Payback time for that special delivery!

    Fifth Quest

Nel: Visit the forest outside Battleon to observe a brood of baby zards and see how a motherzard nutures her young to promote their different elemental tendencies.
Nel: Be careful: Some Zard families are left over from the Zardmaster's experiments, and they're a little bigger and stronger than normal Zards. have a few extra potions just in case.

    *The forest outside Battleon*

You: Awwww. Aren't you the cutest little thing?
    Baby Zard: wibawg?
You: What's that? I knew I should've brushed up my Zard before coming out.
You: ...The "Zardish Dictionary" is only one page. That can't be a good sign.
    You: Wibawg: see Ribarg. Ribarg...
You: An expression of hunger. Because Zards are always hungry.
You: ...Oh no. Down boy! Heel! Stay! Ribarg! Aaah!
    Baby Zard: Wibaaaawwwwgggg!!!

    Sixth Quest

Nel: Go to Greenguard Forest and observe the unusual protective abilities of the wily Forest Demon. Be careful, for they do not like outsiders encroaching on their habitat.
Nel: Take a few extra potions just in case.

    *Greenguard Forest*

You: Wee, here I am. Nel said there was a forest demon named Gort around here. But why would he say those funny magic words would control it?
You: They're no spell I recognize. Bah, I'll stick with my usual ones.
You: Oh well. I guess I'll consult the "Diabolicon ex Malus" and see what it tells me about forest demons...
You: Hrm..."Composed of elemental forces, like djinn or Brilhado..." Already read that part. "...or currupted by dark magics, like the legendary Stragath." Yadda yadda yadda.
You: Ah! Here we go. "Forest demons were once protective spirits, charged by the Earth Lord with keeping the forests safe."
You: "Their outrage at the encroachment of man twisted them into a far more powerful and evil form."
You: "However, they still maintain enough of a communion with the land to generate a shield of magical force as hard as rock."
You: Wll speak of the devil, here he is now. Yo, spinach-chin!
You: Uh-oh. He looks angry. Maybe he prefers lettuce. Now...what were those words?
You: Klaatu! Barada! ... um ... Nicknack! Nitpick! Nickname! NAPKIIIIIIN!!!!
Forest Demon: Grrraa! Come get me!!!

    Seventh Quest

Nel: Visit the wizards' tower out in the plains of Dagin Fields and observe the cabal of shifters there firsthand, to study their intelligence, focus, and dedication.
Nel: Their transformation left them with an alien outlook on life, and a little bit of a temper. Have a few extra potions just in case.

    *Dagin Fields*

You: Hmm. According to the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Magical Disorders," some believe the first Shifters suffered from "bielemental disorder".
You: In an attempt to reconcile their two halves, they traded a part of their humanity...and sanity...for the elemental essences.
You: Fortunately, while they're away, I can slip in and read their notes! I can't wait!

    *Library*

You: Huh? According to these notes, they're searching for a new element...Lathium?
Shifter: Ssss. You will not interrupt our resssearch.
You: Maybe next I should study how rogues hide in shadows.

    Eighth Quest

Nel: A young light dragon has been wandering too close to the School of Thought on the plains.
Nel: This is a perfect opportunity to not only help defend the School but observe a dragon firsthand and study the powerful muscles beneath its scaly skin.
Nel: You may want to trade in your spectacles for sunglasses... ahem. Take a few extra potions just in case.

*The plains near the School of Thought*

You: A dragon! Oh man, this is the big time! I'm so psyched! Alright <Your Name>, deep breaths... deep breaths...
You: I know what'll settle me down before I go out and fight him! I'll just read a little bit about light dragons in "Libris Draconis." The more you know...
You: Hmm. What're all these funny bump patterns underneath the words? Ah well.
You: Light dragons have the ability to blind their foes with the brilliance of their breath." I guess that's what Nel meant about the shading tint.
You: "As dragons age, they gain great magical power and can cast spells." Gulp... I hope this one is still young, then all I have to worry about is its teeth and claws and breath and...
You: ...oh, Darkness Lord shade me, I'd better stop reading this book and go, before I talk myself out of it...

    Ninth Quest

Nel: Go to the graveyard at Granemor. My research has shown me the origins of one of the more common sights there: the banshee Alinora, an Elf maidan who died violently.
Nel: She now keens the death kneil for other creatures. See if you can put her soul to rest, while observing the way her screams drain your mental resolve as well as your physical strength.
Nel: Beware: the wail of a Banshee is said to signal one's impending demise. Have a few extra health potions just in case...

    *Granemor's graveyard*

You: Well, here I am at the cemetary gates. What was that the "Fey Folio" said about banshees?
You: "A reminder of a banshee's former life can put her to rest. Failing that, the strongest light magic you have at your disposal will do."
You: Nel couldn't track down where she came from, so I can't hunt for an engagement ring or a mother's necklace or something like that...

    Choice:

  • Try to think of something to remind her of her life
  • Just go in fighting!

Try to think of something to remind her of her life

You: Hmm. Elves like songs, don't they?
You: Well, I guess that'll have to do. I really hope I don't have to go to the Folio's plan B...I don't want to hurt her, even though she's already dead.
    You: In I go!

You may fully recover your HP and MP 3 times between fights

You: Well, I'm near her grove. I'd better think of a song.
You: Oh! That's it. What better to use to try to send her to eternal rest than a lullaby?

*Ailinora appears and screams at you*

You: OW! Ailinora? I don't know this in the original Elvish, but this might sound familiar...

    Tenth Quest

Nel: Go back underground and observe a small Gogg firsthand, to study the best ways to defend yourself from a foe's onslaught.
Nel: You should be careful: it WILL get the drop on you, and that WILL hurt. A lot. I suggest you learn QUICKLY.
Nel: Have a few extra potions-- You will need them.

    *Underground*

You: I swear, when this is over I will burn every last copy of that self-help book. "No Pain, No Gain"?! Putting ridiculous ideas into Nel's head. He's usually far more sensible than this.
You: I mean, EVERYBODY knows there's no way getting hurt will keep somebody from getting hurt. That doesn't make any sense!
You: I don't care what sort of "antibody" mumbo-jumbo he compares it to!
You: And a gogg?! Oh...this really IS going to hurt. But he'll never finish teaching me if I don't go through with this.

    Final Quest

Nel: I've been studying some of the research documents that were discovered from the Dralel facility Drakath was using before it collapsed, and found something interesting
Nel: I guess it explains those reports the town crier was shouting...
You: Whenever you call something "interesting" or "fascinating" it tends to mean "dangerous." What happened this time?
Nel: *blink* Well, I found these research notes about a prototype... mobile weapon? automaton? ...they were working on.
Nel: They built in shields that can shift to defend against each element...and from the look of it, gave it quite an unpleasant punch. And there was no trace of this prototype in the rubble.
Nel: It must have gotten away in the confusion.
You: Normally I don't like being wrong, but in this case I think I would have preferred it. So let me guess...
You: You want me to go out, hop on its back, and using nothing but a paperclip, a folding knife, and some adhesive, disable it so you can study it.
    Nel: You can do that?
    You: Forget I mentioned it.
Nel: Oh. Well, actually I was hoping you'd find it and disable it...destroy it, if necessary. Those reports from the town crier...
Nel: ...this weapon has been attacking towns and hurting people. And the adaptability you've developed makes you the perfect person to deal with this.
You: Oh. Well when you put it like that, what can I say?

    Choice:

  • I'll do it (Stop the weapon!)
  • Nel's Shop
  • Restore Scholar Class
  • I don't want to die (Back to Town)

    *Near a burning town*

You: Those drakel are attacking...and...by the Elemental Lords, that must be it! No time to waste!

You may fully recover your HP and MP 3 times between fights

Nel: You have saved many lives, thanks to the knowledge you have gained as a Scholar. Good luck in all your future adventures, and always remember... knowledge is power.
