Life is life

As Mo’s body hits the floor,
blood gushing out of his headless neck,
Sith turned towards Carlos and Jasmina.
Both staring back at him as Carlos utters:
“What the heck?”

“I can explain it,
he wanted you dead.
He was loyal to Henry,
I did to him what I had.”

As Sith made his excuses,
and saw Jasmina’s eyes fill with tears,
he notices Carlos.
And how he faces this death as a great king should;
strict though fierce.
That’s when Sith knew for sure,
what he did was good.

As they walk the last meters,
out of the dungeon of the king,
into the darkness of the night,
they fill with a feeling of delight.

Some hours later,
Carlos, Jasmina and Sith reached the city wall.
A they sit down in a silent alley Carlos whispers:
“Tomorrow will be the day
Henry’s kingdom starts its fall.”

And with a smile on his face,
Prince Carlos falls asleep.
Sith looks at him and also at the sleeping Jasmina.

“I just hope that promise,
is one Carlos can keep.”

The walls have holes

The next day,
just before noon,
our three friends gather in a different alley.

“My friends,
pretty soon,
we’ll find ourselves in the belly of the beast.

With but one of us trained to kill,
and but one of us knowing the route,
this will prove challenging,
to say the very least.

We must not get caught,
we must not get seen.
But should we get caught,
or should we get seen,
it is on us to make sure we never get fought,
unless you are willing to get your bones crushed into bone-cream.”

Carlos told Sith and Jasmina.

A short nod was all that formed their reply,
and it was enough.
Those would be the last words said,
from now on they would be silent.
No cry,
no laugh,
no sigh,
no cough.

Carlos pressed himself against the wall,
and entered a code consisting of several stones.
Followed by the silent call,
of a pouch tendary bones.
Slowly a hatch swings open,
to enter it one must crawl.
And quickly enough, the oldest prince does just so,
yelling back to his friends:

“Come on!
On the inside it’s not nearly as small!”

As Jasmina follows Carlos into the darkness,
she ponders over what the prince told her before.
Over how the ground below the castle,
is filled with tunnels, crevices, and so much more.

She pondered over the vastness,
she pondered over the state,
she even pondered over the colour of the floor.
But most of all she pondered;
over how strange it was nobody knew about this place anymore.

Well, nobody except for Carlos,
as he claims to have used these tunnels his entire life.
For games of hide and seek with his brother,
or to hide when his father came to introduce his second wife.

Jasmina knew this wouldn’t be the hardest part,
they’d just follow some tunnels that ended up in a kitchen.
The hardest part would simply be,
to get to that traitor, Henry,
without ever being seen.

Stacked actors in a Long road to ruin… For all the cows.

We had been crawling through tunnels,
for hours at a time.
At times we walked through gigantic corridors,
at other times we’d crawl through inches of mud and slime.

It was cold down there,
cold and muddy and wet.
But that didn’t hurt us,
as we had a goal,
a goal we had to get.

The only light came from a torch,
in Carlos’s hand.
But after a while,
say another mile,
a faint shimmer could be seen behind every bend.

Until we reached a differently looking wall,
where the kitchen was supposed to be.
Again, Carlos pressed some stones,
and shook the bag with tendary bones.

The stone wall opened,
only to reveal…
A plate of solid steel.

Carlos pushed against the plate,
but it wouldn’t move.
He turned around and shook his head.

When on the other side of the steel a voice resounded:
“You know what I don’t get…”

The conversation

“I do not get this world,
I do not get our king
I actually do not get…
Anything.”

I do not know how we got to trust Henry,
someone so clearly evil.
But most of all
I do not get,
what happened to our former king.

‘cause in my years working for him
I had come to believe,
and eventually even come to expect
this king would never leave.

I was under the impression
I knew a thing or two about men…

It seems that impression was wrong.”

As the anonymous voice behind the steel stops talking
it is quickly replied to by another voice.

“No! Clyde,
you aren’t wrong.
You never are,
I don’t know what has happened,
but even I know the king would never do a thing like that.”

Upon hearing the name,
Carlos looked up with relief in his eyes.
A relief even greater when he came to realise
Clyde was on to Henry’s lies.

A silent smirk emerged from his mouth,
followed by the sound of Carlos pounding on the steel plate
and yelling on the top of his lungs.

“Clyde! Have no fear,
It’s me, Carlos
I’m stuck behind this metal thing over here.”

Isn’t it strange how just the right things always seem to happen on just the right moment?

It took them a while,
but eventually
Clyde and his female friend managed to free Carlos and his gang.

But the while it took to get out of the tunnel
fell into nothing compared to the time it took to explain how they got in there,
to explain what had happened.
And finally to relish in the knowledge life,
Indeed,
Is not fair.

But this happy reunion
didn’t last long.
As Carlos announced his plan to kill Henry
and Clyde simply told him he was wrong.

“You can’t just barge in
blades unsheathed,
magic blazing,
and hope all the enemy will be doing is some surprised gazing,
and expect to walk back out alive.

Not here at least,
not in the belly of the beast.”

This thought was concurred
by the otherwise so silent female,

“yes indeed,
Clyde is right.
You really need a better plan.”

“Well, excuse me miss perfect.
But who the hell are you to say we are wrong.”
Jasmina said with anger in her voice
for the reply,
she didn’t have to wait very long.

“My name is Fabula from Rosmalen,
but you may call me Fab.
I might just only be the kitchen help.
But even I have the brains to figure doing this is wrong.”

”We are going to Davy Jones’ locker”
“Bring me a big cheeseburger.”

There they stood,
once again,
guarding.
Walking left,
then right again.

This would be,
their second month,
guarding this meaningless corridor.
Seeing no action,
silently wondering what their training was for.

The first week of guarding,
they grew hungry for action.
The second week,
they grew hungry for more.

So you could imagine how hungry they’d be,
after two months
and some hours more.

It was just another minute,
in just another hour,
of just another day.
When out of the blue,
they heard a sound,
a yell of some sort.

“Quick, get over here!
I’ve spotted three intruders!”

Surprised the guards look up,
to see Fab, the kitchen help.
Calling and pointing at something just around the corner.

Something they just can’t see.

Hungry for action,
they sprint to the location pointed at.
Only to run straight into the sharp blades,
Carlos and Sith had drawn only a few seconds before.

Believe me,
by now,
those guards aren’t alive anymore.

The holiday cliff-hanger

“Those were the last two,
good job Fab.”
Carlos praised the kitchen help.

“Now we only need to get to Henry,
without him ever seeing any of you…
Or me.
You’d think that won’t be easy
but what’d you say…
It is.”

Carlos announced with a devious glimmer in his eye.

“What are you blabbering about Carlos?
Easy?
Why?”
Louded Fab’s surprised reply.

“Well for the same reason we got to you unnoticed.
Am I wrong or am I right?”
Carlos replied
as he winked at Clyde.

“Yes my friend,
yes you are correct.
There are tunnels and hidden rooms within these walls
and one of them,
as I recall,
fits our goal perfectly.

As it leads into the throne room
without you ever getting seen.”

Not much later,
say a minute, maybe some seconds more.
All five of our friends
had cramped themselves into a tunnel
even smaller than the one before.

Carlos had explained how this tunnel was used originally,
as a quick way to get from door to door
by the midgets the royal house kept
to clean the royal floor.
Before,
of course,
the big release many years ago.

Since then these tunnels have only been used,
by the few people that know.

The tunnel led into a room
barely big enough for the five of them.
But there, just next to an old and dusty broom,
were a number of small spy-holes.

What they saw when they looked through those holes shocked them,
not as much as it’ll shock you,
but still
I am pretty sure it will.”

Crossed star lovers

“We’ve really got them now, dear.
They’ll have no idea what hit them.
And as soon as this is over,
our kingdom will be all-powerful.”

A female voice laughs,
quickly joined by a male’s.

“Oh, my queen,
how I love it when your plans work out.
For a moment, I feared they wouldn’t believe us,
but my note got rid of all their doubts.”

Through the holes in the wall,
Carlos could clearly see
two people hugging together on the throne.
Queen Rico was one,
and the other was ‘king’ Henry.

Jasmina let out a shocked gasp
during a short moment of silence.
But no matter how silent it was
or how quick the moment passed
it was enough to shock Rico and Henry.

Knowing they had been heard
Carlos let out an angry call
and burst through the,
luckily for him thin,
wall.

“What the hell is all of this?
Explain it or you will die.
Explain to me what you did…
And why!”

Carlos drew his sword,
while yelling this at Henry,
joined by Jasmina, Fab, Clyde and Sith.

But instead of an explanation
a question came in reply.
“What are you doing Carlos?
And who the hell are these people you’re with?”

Henry too drew his sword,
as Carlos was still too far away to react.
All Rico did
was slowly retract

Clearly we’re nearing
the final act.

Preparation, preparation

There they stood,
facing each other.
The forces of patriotic good
versus the forces of the other.

The first to speak,
and break the silence,
was Carlos.

“Tell me,
Henry,
what the hell is all of this about?”

His voice seemed calm,
but on the inside he struggled not to shout.

“Well it seems rather clear,
to me,
that I wouldn’t want you to know.
Seeing the effort I put into keeping all of this a secret.

So…

But hey, if you’re really that desperate,
I’ll strike you a deal.
You give in and surrender
and I’ll tell you everything…
For real.”

Carlos laughed,
and said in mocking reply:

“I know something better,
you’ll tell us…
Or die!”

In true royal style,
the last word was shouted.
As Carlos charged the false king.

And for a brief second,
their swords did the talking.

But as quick as this barrage started,
it ended.

All Carlos’ blows parried by Henry,
as if they were nothing.

“You have guts my friend,
you really do.
So much guts I start to find myself
admiring you.

Tell you what,
I give in,
I’ll answer one question.

Think, though, what that question will be,
‘cause getting an answer to the next one
won’t be so easy.”

Carlos did not need,
to think very long.
And when he asked the question
his hand was as steady
as his voice was strong.

“My question is simple,
the answer is not.
Tell me Henry who are you
and what is that you and Rico got?”

“Well, Carlos, actually those are two questions,
but I’m in good enough a mood to answer both.

My name is really Henry,
I was a private first class in your father’s army.
Back when my brother was alive,
that was.

Some years ago we received the order,
to travel into King Stromy’s land.
It would be dangerous to go,
and I actually didn’t want to
but if I disobeyed it’d cost me my right hand.

-In those days that was the punishment for deserting the army.-

So reluctantly I went.

I won’t say how it happened,
but along the way we got caught.
During the following months we got questioned
and tortured…
my brother didn’t survive.

It was there I met Rico,
the torturer in that camp.
One night I overheard her talking about a coup
so I offered her a hand.

First it was just self-preservation,
survival instincts and all that crap.
But I found I fell in love with her…”

At this point Henry stopped talking.

“… I think you’ve heard enough.
Guards!”

Questions

Two guards entered the room from behind Henry,
blades pulled and shields high.
They stormed right towards Carlos’ friends
simply passing him by.

An intense fight followed,
where Sith really showed his power.
Defending his friends,
against a bladed shower.

Jasmina managed to kick one guard in the nuts,
rendering him motionless for a few seconds.
As Sith found an opening in the second guard's defence
and impaled him on his sword.

The downed guard was quickly beheaded,
blood flying all around.
As Henry made a rather interesting sound.

Followed by these words:

“Very well then,
I’ll tell you some more…
As I was saying before.

It wasn’t long till Rico got power
but we both knew that wasn’t enough.”

Here Rico,
who had backed away a few feet more,
fell in.

“Yeah,
why stop with one kingdom,
when we could rule the world?
No matter how silent, no matter how rough.”

“Indeed, dear,”
Henry continues.
“We hatched a plan.
We’d take over the world,
one kingdom at a time.

We knew we’d be unable
to just attack with our army.
Which no matter how strong,
would never stand a chance.

So instead I infiltrated our strongest opponent,
and started this mess.”

“The plan was pretty simple,”
Rico explained,
“while I was building up our forces
Henry would ensure New Haven did the same.
So he spread false rumours
and tricked you, your brother and the king.
All in preparation for my mark,
Which,
one year ago,
finally came.”

Henry once again took over,
as it was getting pretty clear.
These two were a whole lot closer
than just ‘darling’ or ‘dear’.

“I killed your brother,
I killed the king,
and I would’ve killed you
if it wasn’t for that tiny little thing.

See, as he died your brother cursed me,
with his dying breath.
He took away my power to kill you
until his soul had completely left.

He had a strong soul,
Raphael.
Which anger made even stronger.

So he managed to stick around,
for so much longer
then any soul before.
I…”

A clang broke the momentary silence,
during his speech Henry had snuck up to Carlos
and suddenly attacked him.

Carlos managed to parry,
an otherwise devastating blow.
And in a reflex he countered
using his fist to break Henry’s nose.

Henry, though, wouldn’t give up
swinging his blade towards Carlos’ neck.
Carlos brought his hand up once again
as a cut appeared on its back.

With only one hand holding his sword,
and his weak one at that,
all Carlos could really do
was to try and stab.

Basally Henry steps aside,
as if this were a game.
Swinging his sword towards Carlos’ neck
once again.

But halfway in this blow of death
Henry suddenly freezes.
Surprised he stares at his chest
where the tip of a sword is sticking out.

As he slowly backs away
he looks at the one that killed him
not a man but a woman stares back

a woman named Jasmina.

Pulling the sword out of Henry’s back,
Jasmina focuses on Rico.

The final act

Henry died that fateful day,
now a year ago.
So did Rico by the way
though she did it herself.

It took a while to explain
what had happened to the people.
Getting them to trust Carlos took forevermore,
but by now nobody can complain.
As things got better than ever before.

The kingdom of Stromy joined New Haven,
under the lead of King Carlos the third
and Queen Jasmina the first.

And under their rule the kingdom came to prosper,
under their rule it came to peace.
And while Carlos may not be the best king,
he’s certainly not the least.

I could tell you about Sith now,
chief of royal security.
Or about Clyde and Fab
heads of cleaning and cooking,
respectably.

Or even about the Dreamville Inn,
the kingdom’s most respected bar.

But I think by now you’ve heard enough,
I think by now you’ve seen enough,
I think by now you’ve read enough,

so I won’t say another word,
other than:

I hope to see you again soon,
in the kingdom of New Haven.
