Prophet
Book 1: Torah
Chapter 0

“Hehe, you’re in for more than you bargained for!” Proth said, smiling a challenge. A flash of light, two swords out, the sound of steel on steel, Rein shot a smile back.

“Hah, I’ve been practicing brother. Don’t underestimate me!” Rein’s eyes narrowed, staring at his older brother menacingly. Rein leapt back and took off, his white wings flapping furiously. Higher, higher, higher…

He would fly up, fly up and up and up until he couldn’t fly anymore, and then he’d drop like a bullet and fire out all his magic at once. Even Proth couldn’t avoid all that, he just couldn’t.

“Interesting strategy,” Rein froze. Proth was behind him, matching his upward velocity perfectly. “But it won’t work.” Proth spun, disarmed Rein with his free arm, and then flipped into the air, delivering a kick with both heels to Rein’s chest. Proth stared at the falling Rein, a faint smile on his lips. “Good wings.”

Rein tried to catch his breath, spinning in the air, out of control. He tried to flap his wings, but the wind simply tore at them and bending them into awkward positions. Gritting his teeth, he prepared for impact.

It never came. Rein’s eyes bulged as he felt a sudden force stop him; his body nearly tearing through is clothing. He was suddenly dropped as Proth let go of his back, his face meeting the ground below. Rein gasped, trying to catch his breath.

“Good game.” Proth yawned, landing gently on the ground. He sheathed his sword and sat on a nearby bench, several onlookers staring and pointing. Some whispering “there’s the General!” Proth lifted a panting Rein back on his feet, looking around the small park with a look of satisfaction on his face.

“Shut up,” Rein wheezed. “You smug jerk… I’m going to-“

“Going to what? I can beat you without lifting a finger, what do you think you can possibly do to me?” Proth asked, amused. Rein stopped talking.

Suddenly, a large, breathless, muscular figure broke through the small crowd of onlookers. He was covered in sweat. He stared at Proth, his body shaking.

“General! An attack! Someone’s attacked the governor!” Everyone froze; total silence enveloped the small area. “The killers are headed west from here, we can catch them if we hurry. Please General, you’re the only one… the only one here who’s strong enough… these men wiped out security easily… you’re the only one who stands a chance!” The man was panicking, his voice giving hints at slight hysteria.

“And father?” Proth asked.

“He has not been identified as dead… please sir! The killers!” The man moaned.

“West you said? Alright then, leave it to me. Rein, go home, it’s not safe here anymore.” Proth replied, nodding his head. With that, he took off so quickly that a small crater was left where he was just standing.

“Thank you General! Thank you!” The shaking man called, the small crowd applauding.

Applauding? Are they stupid? The Governor is dead, get in your homes! Get out of the way! Rein thought bitterly. They say Father’s still alive… that’s good. But… if the killers are as strong as they say… Rein shook his head. Even Dad… I have to do something damnit! I’m not letting that smug jerk get away with being a hero while he just throws me in the corner! I’ll… I’ll save Dad! Rein was shaking as the thought crossed his head. Was he crazy? Rein shook his head... no, he had to do this. He felt a calling, he had to...I won’t let him die… I wont let those killers get him! Rein suddenly took off into a full sprint, not giving half a thought to the shouts of protest from behind.

The Governor was signing a bill, Rein recalled. Right before he was killed. It had to do with giving away a small section of the forest for industrial use… heh… he was probably killed by eco-terrorists right before he could put his name down. It was in a public area, Dad could’ve used the chaos to escape… but knowing Dad, he’s still probably fighting, taking advantage of the confusion. I have to get there fast!

Left. Right. Forward two blocks. Left. Another left. Into the alley… Rein felt his energy begin to dwindle, but he kept up his breakneck pace. Just this last turn and…

Blood. The area was covered in blood. Dozens of civilians, security gods, and assassins littered the ground, all indistinguishable from one another. Only one man was standing, hovered over the body of the Governor. His sword stained with blood.

“…Dad?” Rein breathed, watching as his father lifted his sword from the man’s chest. Rein’s eyes began to quiver, the pupil’s shrinking. Dad’s… a killer?

Rein’s father turned, looking him in the eye. “Rein? I’m so glad you’re safe! What are you doing here?” Rein was frozen in place, countering his father’s concerned face with a gaze of shock and mistrust. “…Rein? Oh no, you’re not used to all this bloo-“

“Shut up!” Rein breathed. “Shut. Up. Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!” Rein screamed, tears piling at the edge of his eyes. “You… YOU KILLED HIM!” His body was shaking, his hand grasping his sword instantly. “HOW COULD YOU?” Rein had lost all control; his body was no longer his. He was running, but he didn’t remember trying to run. He was yelling, but he didn’t remember his words. He was grasping his sword, but he never remembered reaching it.

He was stabbing his father through the heart.

The tears were flowing freely, Rein’s grasp on his sword wavering. His father’s eyes shook in shock, and then… his heart stopped beating. Rein didn’t talk; he simply watched his body hit the ground, his eyes burning with hate.

Two minutes later. Two minutes later, he was arrested with the assassination of the Governor’s bodyguard, and his father. His father, the court found, had been innocent- killing all the terrorists and about to save the dying Governor's life... a task that was never completed.
