Assassin Class Training!
Prerequisites
Level 10 Ninja
Level 5 Scholar
Character Level 70

«If you do not meet the prerequisites...»

Wallo: Assassins? Nope, no assassins here. I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about. Besides, you wouldn't know the first thing about being an Assassin.
Wallo: ...If there were any around here. Everybody knows you need to be a Level 10 Ninja and Level 5 Scholar before you have the necessary skills to become an Assassin.
Wallo: Then you need to be Level 70 -- being an Assassin isn't easy! ...Or so they say.
Shii: Buuuut... Well, you're kinda cute. So if you go get some training and come back later, we may know some people who know some people who know something about what you're looking for.

You return to Battleon.

«If you meet the prerequisites...»
Krovesport...

A rough-and-tumble town, filled with all manner of violent and unsavory villains. Every street is a dark alley, every knife is sharp, and every cloak hood shades a face that eyes your coinpurse or your heart. The wharf is filled with men who will tell no tales, and the pig farms are never without feed.

The guards -- the few that haven't been bought -- struggle to maintain order against the teeming hordes of thieves, cutthroats, bandits, brigands, bounty hunters, murderers, rustlers, thugs, crooks, scammers, conmen, robbers, muggers, vipers, snipers, face men, second-story men, scoundrels, cheats, miscreants, pickpockets,
((deep breath)) and mischief-makers.

Somewhere deep in the bowels of this wretched hive is an unassuming office. Within this office -- or so you hear -- are the reins of a secret organization that can, you hope, teach you to join the ranks of the pinnacle of this social food chain. You are looking to become...

...an

    What is an Assassin?
Wallo: An assassin is far from a mere hired killer. We are the excellence in execution. An assassin must be capable of determining the best strategy to strike a fatal blow--
Wallo: -- then making a clean break from the scene. We do this. We're good at shedding blood.

Shii: Hee hee... Thank you for your generous contributions!
From Quest Two onwards, you will have the chance to defy a roll, using your SP. The amount of SP required is as follows:

Ceiling(NewValue * 0.3), point by point, where NewValue is the next point above what you rolled.

    Example: If you roll 94 and you need 95, the cost is Ceiling(95 * 0.3), whereas if you rolled 90 and you need 95, the cost is Ceiling(91 *0.3) + Ceiling(92 *0.3) + Ceiling(93 *0.3) + Ceiling(94 *0.3) + Ceiling(95 *0.3).

Write-up by whackybeanz. Credits to Chii for the SP defiance formula.

    Assassin Class Quest!

    Quest One

Wallo: So, you think you have what it takes to be an Assassin. Heh.
Shii: They all do, heehee. But it's not just physical training. It's easy to learn how to fight. It's lots harder to learn how to KILL.
Wallo: Not everybody can handle it. It takes a special kind of person to do the things we do - to track your target and... make him join the Eternal Choir.
Shii: If you join us, what we teach you will make you one of the most dangerous people around. We can teach you silence, stealth, disguise...
Shii: ...and how to count your target's ribs from across a room so your dagger ends between the correct two-- but if you won't kill then all of that's useless.
Wallo: Here's the deal. You want in, prove it. We've got a former trainee who flaked out and couldn't pull the trigger when he should have. Teach him a lesson.
Shii: What, you expect «You» to be a better teacher than YOU?
    Wallo: ...
Shii: Knowing this slacker, he's out stealing candy from a baby somewhere.
Wallo: Wasn't that how you practiced YOUR Rogue skills, Shii?
Shii: *blush* I... it was a really big baby! Huge, steroid-packed, devil child--
Shii: --Lollipop of Awe and a diaper like an orc bomb--
Wallo: Anyhow, «You», you kill him and you've got his old spot within the organization. How do you like them apples?
  • He's applesauce.
  • Maybe later...
      4 BATTLES

«If you were successful in your roll, the scene switches to you sneaking up behind an assassin.»

    «You»: Psst... BOO.
???: AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!Wallo: There's a time and a place for revealing yourself, even to cause fear in your target. The point is to kill them, which is better accomplished with sharp steel than fear.
Shii: And that wasn't the time or the place. Any more shenanigans and we'll mount you on the wall, teehee!
Wallo: Still, not bad for a new bloke. Welcome.

Shii: So you're ready to continue your training, huh?
  • Assassin Quest!

Wallo: Time for your first assignment. Let's see how you do.
    Shii: We love hands-on training!
Wallo: ... I just bet you do. Let's get down to profiling your target: Phillip Travis Lukar. He's a merchant here in Krovesport who uses his company as a front--
Wallo: -- to trade in certain unpleasant exotic, illicit goods.
Shii: Our employer for this contract would like to keep these goods out of the area.
Wallo: This guy's cagey and paranoid. You're going to have to start by getting some intel. Figure out what he does, when he does it, who he knows, who knows him.
Wallo: Get inside his head. ...Not literally yet. You need to do it figuratively first.
Shii: And THEN literally! And y'know, Wallo, it's not really paranoia, hehe... We really ARE out to get him!
Wallo: Touché, Shii. Touché. Anyhow, «You», we're good sports. ...Mostly. We're not going to leave you completely without guidance.
Wallo: Some of his thugs are well-known for shirking duty. They all tend to hang out together. They won't be missed for a few days. You know what to do.
Shii: Oh, by the way, be careful not to draw too much attention to yourself, hmm? If you kill anybody important you'll spook him and he'll bolt.
Shii: ...Which, unfortunately for you, would mean you've failed.
Wallo: And you know very well what happens to people who fail their tests. Ta-ta!

Shii: *mumbles* I don't want to talk about it.
    «You»: ...Huh?
Wallo: Heheh... Never mind, «You». Not a bad spot of work. The Rusty Dagger is on the south side of town. It's... to call it "rough" would be generous.
Wallo: I know, I know, you've seen your share of rough spots. But this one you can't just bash and smash your way out of. Remember, if your mark finds out you're after him...
    Shii: Hee hee hee...
Wallo: ...Shii gets to have her brand of fun with you.
    «You»: Point taken.

    «Shii gives a great big smile.»

«You»: ...Put those away, Shii, that was NOT an invitation to stab me.

    «Shii stops smiling.»

    Shii: ...Awwwww...
Wallo: Shii, any words of wisdom for our new apprentice?
Shii: "Stab before you are yourself stabbed."
Wallo: ...Oh, well THAT'S just bloody BRILLIANT. I suppose that's supposed to prevent what happened to the last few students?
Shii: They didn't listen to me! If they did they would have stabbed before they got stabbed! I'll have you know that these words of wisdom have kept ME alive quite well.
Wallo: Whatever. «You», just get going, and remember, don't do anything that will make you too visible. Shoo.
Shii: Ohh, "just get going," THAT'S helpful.
    Wallo: ...
«You»: ...Actually, it is. I'm going to do that before more daggers get drawn.

    «Scene: Near Rusty Dagger»

    Plan Your Next Move
Well, Wallo said I need to be subtle, invisible. Do I hide in the shadows, or under their noses? I can watch from the corner and sneak after them, isolate somebody and find out more... or I can pose as an employee, wait on their table, and see if I can overhear something useful. People see "hired help" like waitstaff as invisible, and I can use that to my advantage.

    Shii: Hmmmph.
Wallo: Look, you don't have to LIKE it. But obviously this is how our new protegé is going to get at the target.
    Shii: Well I DON'T. HMMPH.
Wallo: ...This isn't your fault, «You». You just happened to bring up some bad memories.
Wallo: We didn't realize Zweiger was working for Lukar until you brought him up-- and now that he's going to Fast Eddie's, well... Shii's lost more than just a little bit of money there.
Shii: I SAID I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.
    «You»: ...Oooookay...
Wallo: She has a standing invite there. Permanent membership. ...Under another name, of course. Here's the plan.
Wallo: We'll get you in there and bankroll you for the tournament. We can't be seen there, we stand out too much. But you're the new kid in town.
Wallo: We... know Zweiger. You win, and he'll HAVE to challenge you to something else... for a few reasons.
Wallo: First, he'll want "his" money back. Second, by beating him, you've wounded his pride. He needs to make up for that.
Wallo: Third, you're a new face and you might be useful to him... especially if you were good enough to beat him.
Shii: I want nothing to do with this. I'm going to go stab something.

«Shii walks off in a huff, and 'SLAM!!' appears one after the other.»

«You»: ...Don't you two just have the one--
Wallo: --the one hidden door, yes. Which is covered by the vines.
«You»: So did she just-- um--
Wallo: Yes. Yes, she just slammed the vines.
    «You»: But...
Wallo: Don't think about it too hard, lad. It's just you and me, so when we're done I guess I'll teach you... I don't know, something or other. But before that, let's get you ready for the game.
    «You»: Alright, what're the rules?
Wallo: Rules? BWAHAHAHA! You'll pick it up quickly enough at the table. I was talking about showing you the best places to hide some personal cards, in case your hand is terrible.
    Wallo: Which it will be.

«The scene fades black and switches to Fast Eddie's.»

Zweiger: So you're here on Pepper's stamp, huh? Well, her word's always good here.
Zweiger: Where's she been, anyways? She's too saucy to have kicked the bucket without everybody from here to Lolosia knowing about it.
«You»: Pep...? OH, right. Pepper. She's found it more prudent to be out of town for a little while.
«You»: I ran into her a while back in some orc bar in Greenwood. She said if I ever fancied a game of Locos Wild, this was the place to be.
Zweiger: She was right. Have a seat kid, let's play some cards.
  • Play!
Some say that card games -- any card game -- are just based on luck. Some swear there's skill involved. And then there's Locos Wild... which everybody agrees has a little bit of both. Cheating is as much a part of this game as betting... but if you get caught, your night's over.
(The trick, of course, is to not get caught.)
Loco, it's said, was a big fan of modifying the cards in his opponents' hands, not just his own. (Most self-respecting establishments have rules and defenses against that sort of wizardry, and most self-respecting players try to find a way around them.)

You can play the game straight and rely on your Luck to see you through, or you can work a little sleight of hand via Dexterity to help yourself along. Everyone starts with 500 points. Each hand is 100 points to play.

Remember your options. A single loss on a normal hand won't knock you out of the game, but getting caught cheating will. On the other hand, winning at just the right time can mean knocking someone out...

  • Deal those cards!
    Locos Wild
The next hand's coming. Do you want to "improve your odds," or just roll with the cards Loco will send your way?
  • Play the Hand (LUK)
  • Cheat (DEX)
The DC for the rolls is 70 - 5*(# of players left) for cheating, or 90 - (5*# of players left) if you're playing straight. (# of players left) also counts you, so the DCs start off at 50/70 and goes up to 60/80. It can't go any higher, since you need at least two people playing.
    Play the Hand
      Locos Wild!
Will Loco send the right cards your way, or will this hand be a bust?

    Shii: I suppose.
Wallo: Ah, «You», you're back. I assume you won -- so we will be collecting our investment now.
«You»: Yes, I won. You were right, he wants a meeting to discuss a "business proposition" -- at the Zard Pit, so I'm sure he's looking to collect some of his lost dosh, too.
«You»: Point is, I think this is my in.
Wallo: We've heard some whispers in dark alleys about something big going down.
Shii: And I've heard some whispers telling me to stab all of you.
Wallo: Yes, but you always hear those, Shii. These dark-alley ones are new.
    Shii: Oh. Right.
Wallo: Anyhow, I don't know if you've been to the Zard Pit, but it's what's considered "high culture" around here. Forget the opera house in Deren or the open-air stage in Battleon--
Wallo: --THIS is where you'll find true drama and true tragedy!
    Shii: *snrk*
Wallo: Well what's that all about?
Shii: I should ask you the same thing! The opera? Theater? You're going soft, old man.
Wallo: Oh, yes. CLEARLY I should be giving up the things I enjoy because the profession that allows me to pay for them is "too mean" and it doesn't "fit the image."
Shii: Awwwww, Wawwo has a sweet spot. How uttewwy pwecious.
Shii: Those zards in that pit are all graduates of the War Academy of Zardology. They know exactly what they're getting into when they get in the arena, just like anybody else.
Wallo: ...That answers my early question; you're back to normal. Okay, I get it. But what's next? Horse-drawn wagons racing on a circular track? How exciting can a series of left turns BE?!
    «You»: Ahem. Zweiger. Lukar.
    Shii: STAB!
«You»: Yes, definitely back to normal.
Wallo: What do you want to hear from us, some sort of positive validation? A medal from her highness? Sod that. You've got a job to do.
Wallo: The path is clear: through Zweiger. Find out what this "big job" is. Get to Lukar without spooking him. Kill him.
Shii: Now THAT'S the Wallo I know!
    Wallo: Cheeky...

«The scene fades black and switches to the Zard Pit, where two Zards are fighting each other.»

Zweiger: I don't know where you're from, but anybody who can win a game of Locos Wild like that has other skills. You make your own luck, and I like that. So here's the deal.

    «The scene switches to a bar.»

Zweiger: My boss, he's a very wealthy man. He earned his money by satisfying demand for the sorts of things you can't find at your usual general store.
Zweiger: His suppliers... some of them are unhappy. It's getting tougher for them to bring some of their goods into town, and they want a bigger cut.
Zweiger: One of the conditions on their next shipment, in fact, is a meeting to negotiate a new deal.
«You»: Let me guess... your boss is a very private man, he doesn't like meetings.
Zweiger: See, I knew you knew the score! But they insist -- and if there's no meeting, there's no shipment.
Zweiger: Y'know, all this exposition's got my throat dry. Mind getting the next round of 'juice while I visit the book? You ought to have enough of my money left for at least one more drink...

    «Scene: At the bar counter»

    «You»: Gimme two moglinberry juices.
Bartender: Busy night chief, only got one glass. You and your friend want to share? I can get two long straws, it'll be real sweet.

There are a few customary options in this town for convincing the bartender to see things your way. Bartender: Alright, so you beat Brutus. That doesn't mean I've magically found a new glass for you and your friend.
«You»: That's quite alright. You've got a perfectly serviceable container on your arm. I think I'll borrow that.
      «You return to Zweiger.»

      Zweiger: Thought you got lost.
«You»: Nah, just had to persuade the bartender to find another glass. Here ya go.
Zweiger: Why are there bits of circuitry in my drink?
«You»: Oh, um -- silicon is a mineral. It's good for you. Helps keep your status regular and stuff.
Zweiger: Kid, I like you! Nobody thinks to show this kind of respect to their elders and betters these days!
      «You»: Heheheh, yeah... I imagine they don't...
Zweiger: So I'm supposed to meet with somebody representing them to arrange a time and location. Now normally, there's no problem.
Zweiger: We meet, decide where this is going down, and go our separate ways. But there's been odd stuff going down -- low-ranked men in our organization "disappearing" or deciding to leave town suddenly.

«A rogue runs past you. Three different scenarios can happen at this point. For when you get pickpocketed, you make a secret Stat Test. DC is 85, and you use INT. If you succeed, then the pickpocket doesn't run off the screen (Scenario 3).

If you fail the test, you get a second chance after the Cutpurse runs off. You make another Stat Test, this time with a DC of 75. Again, you use INT. If you succeed, refer to Scenario 1. If you fail, refer to Scenario 2.»

        Scenario 1

«You»: ...HEY, that guy stole my gold pouch! I'll be right back, Zweiger -- that punk's gotta pay!
Zweiger: Heh. I was wondering if you'd notice.
«You»: You mean you saw him try? Why didn't you say anything?
Zweiger: You kidding? And miss out on a fight? Besides, I paid him to do it.
        «You»: ... You what?
Zweiger: I. Paid him. To steal. Your gold.
«You»: See, I thought that's what I heard, but I didn't quite believe it. Let me remind you that YOU asked ME here. I don't have to take this.
«You»: Give me one good reason to not walk out of here, and a better one to not pay a visit to your boss's suppliers.
Zweiger: By the Laughing One, kid, do you think I'm gonna just blindly trust you if I don't know you can handle yourself? It was a test. You passed. Get over it.
Zweiger: If it'll make you feel any better, I'll buy the next round. Now, back to the topic at hand, the meeting...
Zweiger: Something's odd about this meeting, and I don't want to take any chances. So I'd like you to come with me and... act threatening. Or do more than "act" if things get hairy. Think you can handle that?
«You»: Yeah, I think I can manage. I'm usually on the other end of bodyguard work, but I suppose you don't kill them without learning what NOT to do.
Zweiger: Hah! That's the spirit! Meet me in front of Fast Eddie's tomorrow night, at 2 in the morning.

Zweiger: Here's your gold. If you can't spot a simple coinpurse, I've got no use for you. Your earlier win must've been some kind of fluke.

«Zweiger throws your Locos Wild winnings on the table.»

«You»: Woah, hey now. Let's not do anything hasty. So I missed your little plant. Big deal. You don't win EVERY hand of Locos Wild. Let's talk about this.
Zweiger: Hmm... You have a pretty good point, kid. Tell you what.

«You»: Nah, just had to persuade the bartender to find another glass. Here ya go.
Zweiger: Huh... this looks a little cloudy.
«You»: It's, um... fortified with an all-natural additive. The bartender added it special, just for you.

        Scenario 3

«A rouge stops right in front of you.»

«You»: *growls* Choose your marks more wisely, punk, because you just pulled a knife on the pursestrings of the wrong one.
        Cutpurse: ... Umm...
«You»: You're lucky I'm in the middle of something.
        «You»: Run.

        «The rouge runs away.»

Zweiger: Good catch. I see I was right about you.
«You»: ... You mean you saw him try?
Zweiger: You kidding? I paid him to do it. Gotta make sure you're sharp enough.
«You»: I'm sorry, I don't think I heard that right. Could you repeat that?
Zweiger: I. Paid him. To steal.

«A rogue appears on the right side of the screen partially.»

Zweiger: Something's odd about this meeting, and I don't want to take any chances. So I'd like you to come with me and... act threatening. Or do more than "act" if things get hairy. Think you can handle that?
«You»: Yeah, I think I can manage. I'm usually on the other end of bodyguard work, but I suppose you don't kill them without learning what NOT to do.
Zweiger: Hah! That's the spirit! Meet me in front of Fast Eddie's tomorrow night, at 2 in the morning.

Shii: So you're ready to continue your training, huh?
  • Assassin Quest!
  • Maybe later

Wallo: Hmm. So Lukar's suppliers wants a bigger cut. That would explain some of those whispers.
Shii: It also explains why he's more nervous than usual... and he makes Valencia on a week-long powdered sugar bender look calm.

    «Shii smiles.»

    Shii: ... Mmm...
Wallo: Shii, finish your daydream about a mountain of powdered sugar -- or Valencia -- or both -- later. Seriously, focus.
    Shii: I WAS focused, thankyouverymuch.
    Wallo: Focus ON TRAINING.

    «Shii stops smiling.»

    Shii: ... That's BORING.
«You»: I'm glad you take such an interest in the development of your guild members.
Wallo: Who said you were a guild member yet? You're not in until you kill Lukar. Don't get cocky, and don't forget your place, rookie.
Wallo: And YOU... just... *sigh* You're still lost with the bloody fairies. Will you at least go get one of the unassigned hitokiri?
Wallo: I think «You» is going to need the backup, with help like yours.
    Shii: Sure.

«As Shii walks out of the scene, she mumbles...»

Shii: *mumbles* ...buy a Little Death from HER Z shop...
Wallo: ... *sigh* She's going to be useless for the rest of the day.
Wallo: So anyhow, here's some background. The hitokiri are a... sub-guild, of sorts.
Wallo: They're from some far-off land or another, and they come over here to the great land of opportunity to see the sights, learn a few new tricks, and so on.
Wallo: They're kind of like exchange students. Of death.
Wallo: Now despite what I said earlier, you're doing alright. I think one of the hitokiri can learn a few things from you.
Wallo: In return for training him, he'll help you out-- fight alongside you, take a watch shift, things like that. Well, if you're a Guardian, at least. Something about their code. It's silly, I guess.
Wallo: But even if you're not a Guardian, you might need the backup on this mission, so take him with you. Go on. He won't bite. Might give a quick nibble though.

    «Scene: Meeting with Lukar's suppliers»

Zweiger: Quite an entourage. I assume you represent my boss's suppliers.
???: You can call me Stuart for now. And then, speaking of entourages, you can get rid of the guard you brought before we talk.

    «Zweiger turns to face you.»

Zweiger: ... There something you neglected to tell me over juice?
«You»: Are you kidding me? This guy's more paranoid than Dilwood Sackelberry in his childhood gym class.

«Zweiger turns to face the suppliers.»

Stuart: Please, have you gone blind or just stupid, Zweiger? I can smell bacon from a mile off. Your "friend" is obviously a guard.

    «Someone appears in the background.»

Hitokiri: (in sign language) It's a trap. Enemies surround the field.
«You»: I thought you were looking a little pudgy there. You might want to follow your nose a little less.
Stuart: If you're not a guard, I'm a paladin. Either you leave and so Zweiger and I can deal alone, or we're gone and it's all off. All of it.
      Uh-oh... Surrounded!

      «You»: If I'm a guard, where's my badge, Paladin?
Stuart: Badge? You don't need no stinkin' badge. Are you trying to set me up, Zweiger?
Zweiger: ... «You»'s right, you DO have a few screws loose. I'm trying to do business here, not set anybody up.
Stuart: Ah, suddenly you're a businessman. Then I'm sure you'll understand...
«You»: (whisper) We're surrounded. This is about to get interesting. Lay low while I do what you brought me here for.
«You»: (in sign language) Avoid detection by patrols, but watch me for further instructions.

«The hitokiri in the background returns to hiding.»

«The hitokiri in the background returns to hiding.»

«You»: What, so you can take him out with no witnesses, then claim he never showed up, so you've got his boss at a disadvantage in the negotiations right from the start?

«A body is thrown over the wall of the meeting place.»

«You»: You think you've got us surrounded, but it's the other way around. And we don't plan on arresting anybody, like a guard would.
«You»: So you make sure your boys play nice while you and Zweiger do what you're here to do, and I'll make sure mine do the same.
«You»: (thinks) That ought to keep the thugs in the stands busy looking in the direction and out of our hair down here...
Zweiger: Way to go, man! I knew I made the right call.

      The dialogue continues below.

    «Zweiger approaches Stuart.»

Zweiger: My boss is going to hear about this, Stuart. It's not going to look good for them when it's time for the meeting. Now until then...
Zweiger: Here's the address and key to the escrow warehouse. You and your employers will store the goods there during the negotiations.
    Stuart: ...
Stuart: And what assurance do we have that this is legitimate, and that you haven't messed with the warehouse?
Zweiger: "Have you gone blind or just stupid," Stuart? The seal's in place, we don't know what warehouse you're in.
Zweiger: Do you think I would risk crossing the escrow organization? They stay neutral, and that works out best for everybody.
Zweiger: If I open that, I ruin that for not just myself but my boss. That's a death sentence in this town.
«You»: (thinks) There we go... the next link up the chain to Lukar. If he's going to stay in hiding until the meeting, then I need to get to where I know he'll be. Which means I need to get into that warehouse first.
«You»: (in sign language) Hitokiri, follow this man. Send report to base with his location.

Shii: So you're ready to continue your training, huh?
  • Assassin Quest!
  • Maybe later

Wallo: So you actually made it out of that stew alive. But did you learn anything?
«You»: You can't kill a man who can't be found. So I'm going to find him-- by learning where he will be, and when.
Shii: And how do you plan to do that from here?

«A piece of tattered parchment sways in the air and you catch hold of it.»

«You»: His suppliers are paranoid... but not terribly bright. They're easier to track, especially after they reveal themselves and try to kill you.
«You»: My Hitokiri just said he followed our friend from the arena to... an inn called "the Triple Entendre." Do you know the place?
Wallo: ... Yes. I'm familiar with it. It's a... specialty restaurant and inn.
Wallo: There's a spa in back where they offer a wide variety of relaxation services besides a warm meal and a few pints of moglinberry juice.
    Shii: Teehee!
Wallo: It's... *cough* been around for a while, but a few months back some Sheepbiter moved into town from Granemor.
Wallo: Said that after he got mutated by all the stuff that happened at the Scar, he had to figure out some way to make an honest living.
Wallo: So he bought the place and made himself the mascot. He said it was named after his favorite drink, so it was supposed to be lucky or something.
Wallo: The way there isn't easy. There are... many bad alleys to wander down, and it's in an especially rough part of town.
Shii: Oh by Yajuu's Name, are you going to get all weepy-eyed in your one good one, gramps? I'll put it out for you and we can go see Vince again, if you want. That'll stop it for good.
Wallo: Shii, I'll ask nicely. Once.

«The scene zooms in to Wallo and Shii's face.»

Wallo: Please don't make that threat again, or I will permanently silence each. And. Every. Little. Voice. Inside your pretty little head.

    «The scene zooms back out.»

Shii: ... Hey, don't forget how that went down.
    Wallo: ... I haven't.

«You»: And here we are. Time to head in and see if I can get the lay of the land. I'll need to find Stuart and get that letter... preferably without him knowing.
  • Go!

    «Scene: The Triple Entendre»

Woman: Welcome. You may call me Heidi, I'm the manager of this little oasis in the big bad city. You certainly look like you could use some relaxation, and this is the best place in town for that...
Heidi: Come in and put your feet up, we'll have someone take care of you.
    «You»: I'm actually looking for a friend.
Heidi: We're all very friendly here, dear. But you're going to have to leave all of your gear in our safety-deposit room. It's tough to be friendly with someone armed like that.
«You»: I'm not sure I could possibly part with some of what I'm carrying... Besides, I'm just a simple traveler.
Heidi: "Just a simple traveler," right. Honey, you're carrying several suits of armor, and armory full of weapons and shields, and...
Heidi: ...you know, I suppose I've seen animals tucked in weirder places than there.
Heidi: Honestly, you should have worse back problems than some of my girls.
«You»: I'm sorry to hear about your daughters' scoliosis, ma'am.
Heidi: *titter* I like you, but we have a strict policy here, sweets. Your weapons and other fun stuff have to get locked up. No toys except the ones already in here. Ace and Gary insist.
Heidi: Don't worry, I promise your stuff will be safe. Our safe-deposit box is the state of the art. Even our occasional VIPs feel safe leaving things in there.
Heidi: Our detection spells are state of the art too, so just be good and empty your pockets completely, mmm?
«You»: (thinks) Hmm... "empty your pockets completely," huh? This might actually be my shot. If Stuart's here, then his stuff-- including that letter-- has to be in there too.
«You»: Well, alright. Could you point me to the room where I can keep my stuff, Madame?
Heidi: Of course, dear. Ace, if you would please?
    Ace: Sure thing, boss-lady.

    «Scene: At the safe-deposit box»

Ace: Just put your stuff in the, heh, safe-deposit box with everybody else's.
«You»: ... That doesn't strike me as very "safe," mixing it all together like that.
Ace: Don't worry about it. The chest takes care of the tricky bits, like sorting and keeping track of who deposited what. We'll be right outside.

    «Ace exits the scene.»

«You»: Alright, I need to be quick. It's gotta be in here somewhere...

«The chest opens, revealing a completely empty space.»

«You»: ...Empty? That's... really weird. I know I heard some kind of big party going on upstairs. So that letter HAS to be in here somewhere...

«The chest slams shut, hitting you in the process.»

«You»: OW! That really hurt! How'd the lid slam down so hard?! Let's try this again. Maybe there's a false bottom...

«The chest opens again, revealing a completely empty space.»

«You»: Hmmm... no, no sign of any hidden latches... Hmm, interesting, what's this pink--

«The chest slams shut, hitting you again.»

    «You»: OW! Why you little...

«A pink tongue sticks out from the safe-deposit box and waves around.»

«You»: So. You're the "safety deposit box."
«You»: ...HOW do you manage that smug smile while being made of wood and brass?!
«You»: Listen up, you cheeky coffer. You've got something I want, and you're going to spit it out for me. Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way.

«The "safety deposit box" opens up, revealing very sharp rows of teeth.»

«You»: Oh, so you're hungry, aren't you. Well, then...

    Tricky Trunk
Heidi said everybody empties their pockets into this chest. Unfortunately, it's a mimic! But if Stuart's here, then the note leading to the suppliers' warehouse is here too, along with the key. How do you want to deal with the mimic chest?
  • Bash it's lid in
  • Offer it a treat
    Bash it's lid in

«You»: Open wide, you son of a pauper's coffin! HERE'S something you can swallow!
  • Fight!«You»: That's one less fake chest in this building. Now where's that note and key...

«You find a note and a key from the chest.»

«You»: Ah, here we go. Now we make a copy of this stuff, steal a few random things to make it look like they were my target and not the information...

«Ace and Gary, the club bouncers enter.»

«You»: ...and deal with the two stooges here.«You»: Time for a quick exit! I'll try to make sense of this note later.

«The scene fades black and you receive a Class Level Up.»

    Wallo: Welcome back.
    «You»: Thanks. Um, where's Shii?
Wallo: On a walkabout. ...No, I didn't kill her. Yet. Did you find whatever it was you were looking for at the Entendre?
    «You»: I think so.
Wallo: That's nice. Heidi's a real sweetheart, isn't she. And an absolute vision of beauty, to boot. Did you have some of her special herbal tea? It's really quite a pick-me-up.
Wallo: ...Or did you MAYBE find something USEFUL, you muppet?
Wallo: This whole path was your idea. You'd better be more certain then "thinking so," apprentice, or you know what the consequence will be.
«You»: Of course. Um... this is the address of the warehouse where the shipment will be stored, and a copy of the key to the door.
«You»: From there I'll be able to track back to the merchants themselves -- and their meeting with Lukar.
Wallo: Then you have your plan. Be careful at the warehouse. Either don't be seen, or don't leave anyone alive who's seen you.

«You»: ...Looks like I'll have to do this the hard way.
    • Fight!

The rest of the dialogue is the same as when you chose to fight the guards.
«If you succeeded in your roll, or had enough SP and chose 'Yes' to defy the roll...»

      Guard: You hear that?
Guard: Yeah. Let's go check it out.

«The guards leave their posts to check the alley, leaving the warehouse completely unguarded for you to enter.»

      The dialogue continues below.

    Fight

«You enter the scene and the guards face you.»

    Guard: You there! Keep moving!
«You»: Oh, I plan on it. Right through that door. The dialogue continues below.
    «You proceed into the warehouse.»

«You»: Curses! I'm too early... they haven't moved in most of their goods. I don't have a chance now... I'm committed. I have to search for SOMETHING to lead me to them.

«Within the warehouse, you have a random chance of encountering a guard. The message "Looks like a guard on patrol! You know what you have to do... leave no witnesses!" appears when this happens and you enter a battle.»
      1 BATTLE

Wallo: I'm going to ignore that. Hmm... mostly close-quarters wetwork, so the shorter blades are good. I'll bring my gun, of course...
Shii: Don't forget your skill. Left side of the desk, third drawer down, under those magazines.

    «Wallo faces Shii.»

Wallo: I get it, Shii. You think I can't handle it anymore. But this is MY job, whelp, and I'm going to finish it. If you really think I can't do what I must, then you know what YOU have to do.

    «Wallo walks away.»

Shii: Sorry you have to see this sort of thing. It's sad when someone goes over the hill like that. He used to be the best.
Shii: I really think you've got a bright future here in the guild. I just hope I can count on you...
Shii: So what did you find at the warehouse?
«You»: Um. Well, the shipment is arriving from Dock 24. I was going to see if they have contact records for the shippers... or maybe there's some information on the ship itself.
Shii: Not a bad idea. And then once you follow the shippers to the meeting with Lukar...
    «You»: ...he dies.

    «Shii smiles.»

Shii: Teehee! Very good, you're learning well! Now get out there, finish your training, and make us proud.

    Quest Ten

Shii: So you're ready to continue your training, huh?
  • Assassin Quest!
  • Maybe later

«You»: ...so I paid a visit to the Bloody Ruffian, and it seems as though the supplier who owns that ship also rented the private room at the inn for the night. If there's a meeting, that's where it is.
«You»: I've left my hikitori keeping an eye on them while I reported back here, in case they move to a new location... but I don't think they will. Every instinct says this is the place.
Shii: Heee... goodgood. I know the inn. Go and reserve room 211, it's right above the private room. You'll be able to slip riiiight out your back window, and be right outside their window.
Shii: This is it. I hope you're ready... you show such promise and skill, it would be a real shame to kill you and have to train somebody else.
«You»: You won't have to worry about that. Lukar's as good as dead.

    «Shii smiles.»

    Shii: Yay!

«The scene fades off and switches to a scene in a room at the Bloody Ruffian, where you are spying at the suppliers from outside the window.»

    Supplier 1: He's late.
Supplier 2: He'll be here. He betta' be, or he be gettin' no more from any of us, right men?
Supplier 1, 3 and 4 in unison: Aye!
    ???: What's that, now?

    «Wallo enters the scene.»

"Lukar" (?!): You guys weren't discussing cutting me out, now were you? Because you might have some difficulties finding anybody else willing to distribute your wares...

«The scene switches to outside the window of the room.»

«You»: ...WHAT is going on here?

«The scene switches back to the room, where "Lukar" has taken a seat to have a drink while speaking to the suppliers.»

Supplier 2: 'T ain't like dat, Lukar. We be gettin' da squeeze from our sources. Dey be wantin' more money, so we gotta get more on da otha' end. Ye unnastand, s' business...
"Lukar": Yes, "business." Like trying to set up my man at the arena. That's "just business."
Supplier 1: ... Some of our men got a little... overzealous in protecting our interests.
"Lukar": Of course they did. And what about the assassins after me? Was that more of "your men" getting "overzealous"?
Supplier 2: ...Assassin? Naw, dat wasn't me...
Supplier 1 (in unison): Not me!
Supplier 3 (in unison): No way!
Supplier 4 (in unison): Not a chance.
"Lukar": Well, SOMEBODY did. Somebody's been driving off most of my employees. I've had to switch hideouts at least fifteen times.
"Lukar": And for all we know, that assassin could be right outside the window RIGHT NOW! Waiting to leap in and KILL EVERYONE... IN... THIS... ROOM.
«You»: (thinks) ... Subtle, Wallo. So he was using me this whole time... After they all die, we are going to have some SERIOUS words.

    «The room becomes completely silent.»

    "Lukar": Or maybe RIGHT NOW.

    «The room stays completely silent.»

    "Lukar": ... I suppose I deserve that.

«A short cutscene shows you crashing in through the window of the inn, where everyone is stunned by your entry.

Shii bursts into the room and strikes down Supplier 1, and you disappear into the shadows.

As the remaining suppliers stand up, you appear behind Supplier 3 and strike him down.

You and Wallo attempt to kill Supplier 4 from opposite sides, grinding against his metallic axe and armor, while Shii uses Kiss of Death on Supplier 2 who gets knocked out.

Wallo leaps back a step and fires a gunshot at Supplier 4, which narrowly misses both you and him, and you take the opportunity to kill Supplier 4.

Since Supplier 4 is now not in the way of both you and Wallo, both of you charge towards each other, but Shii stops both you and Wallo from attacking each other before some serious damage is done.»

Shii: Teehee... well isn't THIS quite a predicament! So much fun! Now what? Who dies? Let's dance!
Wallo: I guess that's up to our newest member, because I know what you and I will do. It's time to choose your allies and your fate, Assassin. What will you do?

    A Fate Revealed
  • Stand Alone
  • Assist Wallo
  • Assist Shii
  • Knock sense into them both
    Stand Alone

«You»: Forget you both. You used me this whole time. I don't trust either of you.
«You»: You've taught me a lot -- but the biggest thing you've taught me is that I'm nobody's patsy.
«You» (word by word): Not. Even. Yours.
    Both: ....
Wallo: We did what we had to do. If "Lukar" didn't have some real threat following him, nobody would've bought my disguises. We needed you in order to get close to all of them.
Shii: It was the only way to force a meeting in a nice quiet location like this, where they could all go down at once.
Wallo: We used it as an opportunity to sharpen your skills, as well as provide us a covering backstory. They were shipping in and smugglin--
«You»: --I don't care. I don't care what they were doing, I don't care what reasons you had.
«You»: You can take your gun, and your lollipop, and your whole GUILD, and stuff them up that impossibly short skirt. Or cram them in your hollow eye socket.
    «You»: I'm going solo.

«You leave the Bloody Ruffian and the scene switches to the outside of the inn.»

«You»: Time to hang out my own shingle. I'm sure there are plenty of people looking for someone willing to permanently settle a grudge for them.
«You»: Huh... come to think of it, how DID people contact Wallo and Shii, anyways?
«You»: Well, I'll figure things out. And why should I limit myself to just Krovesport? Why, I bet I could make a KILLING in Deren... heheh...

«The scene switches back to the room at the Bloody Ruffian.»

Wallo: ...We really cocked that one up, Shii. «You» was a good one. As good as any of them. And we lost them.
Shii: Yeah. Word's going to get out that the new guy's going it alone, too... and I think more of them will start to think they can do it, too.
Wallo: And having all of those assassins running free in this town... we're in for a wild ride.
Shii: Didn't we set up the guild to rein in some of those guys?
    Wallo: Yeah, including you...

«Outside the Bloody Ruffian, a dagger is thrown at you from somewhere, and Supplier 2 enters.»

Supplier 2: Grrr... ye really made a mess o' things fer me an' me mates! I played dead, but I'll be teachin' ye tha REAL thing!!«You»: ... In hindsight, it might be nice to have someone to watch my back...

«The scene fades off. You obtain 1 of the 4 Level 10 Assassin skills available, Stalwart Solitude.»
    Assist Wallo

«You»: You're a loose cannon, Shii, and one of these days you'll kill us all. It's time to silence the "voices in your head."
Shii: YAY! I get to kill BOTH of you! Oh, I KNEW it was my lucky day, I had SUCH a good horoscope today...
Wallo: You made the right choice, lad. Now let's do this!«Shii lies on the ground, defeated.»

Shii: ...owowow... that didn't hurt so good...
Wallo: So Death's still collecting favors from you... I guess it's your lucky day after all, Shii. The best thing you can do is get as far away from people as you can... and stay there.
    Wallo: ...Take care.
    «You»: ...Huh?
    Wallo: Let's go.

    «You return to the Assassin's Hideout.»

«You»: What was that all about?
Wallo: The voices in her head aren't just figments of her imagination. If she was truly bonkers we wouldn't have worked together as long as we did.
    «You»: ... Good point.
Wallo: Her great-great-great-great-... well... someone in her distant family... survived a demonic massacre.
Wallo: She carries that demon's blood in her, and used it to make a deal with him. It.
Wallo: She feeds it the blood of her victims; it taught her those crazy, vicious skills, which she uses to get more blood.
Wallo: ...I thought the Guild might focus her, make her a USEFUL killing machine, if still a killing machine... but in the end she just couldn't overcome that nature.
Wallo: If that demon ever gets out, that poor lass is in some real trouble... almost as much as everyone around her. That's why I asked her to go far, far away.
«You»: ... I guess it sounds like this is best for everyone. I'm sure she'll be fine...

«The scene switches to Shii, who is somewhere in the fields...»

Shii: (singing) OHHHHHHHH I wish I were a Yulgar Mayer Weiner... 'cause that is what I'd truly like to be...

«The scene switches back to the Assassin's Hideout.»

Wallo: Yeah... just fine. She's been taking care of herself for a long time.
Wallo: ... She was a good lass. Good to have in a fight, and easy to get on with...
Wallo: But maybe you're right. If you ever need my help, «You», just call on me and my gun. We'll be there, anytime and anywhere.
Wallo: Now, it's time to get the Guild back on track...

«The scene fades off. You obtain 1 of the 4 Level 10 Assassin skills available, Blade Shot.»
    Assist Shii

«You»: Shii's right. What's needed in the guild right now is energy. Action.
Wallo: Then I guess it's time to take action. Show me your energy, Assassin. Prove your dedication!
Shii: Teehee! I knew you were a rising star! Let's put out this sputtering flame!«Wallo lies defeated on the ground.»

    Wallo: ...ugh...
Shii: Aww man! Death sent you back?! I'm gonna have some words with ol' Tall Dark and Bony next time I end up down there...
«You»: Bah. It's not worth it, Shii. The job's done -- there's no way he can keep on here. Get out of Krovesport, Wallo.

    «You return to the Assassin's Hideout.»

«You»: So what's the next move?

    «There's a short pause.»

    Shii: ...Huh? Oh, sorry...
«You»: Lost in thought? And not about Valencia this time? ...And APOLOGIZING? This is... not like you.
Shii: No... no it isn't. Wallo and I... we go back a long way.
Shii: Before I started getting paid for my hobby, I just... killed people. You can be really quiet about that sort of thing here in Krovesport.

«A flashback takes place, with the scene at Krovesport, where Shii knocks into Wallo by accident.»

I bumped into him while I was out looking for toys... but decided against him. Something about him said he'd be really fun to kill... but he'd be tough. I was young, and still a fan of easy marks..

«Shii and Wallo walk past each other after the meeting. The scene proceeds to the next day.»

The next morning... after I'd played...
I was walking down an alleyway when I saw him again...

«Shii walks down the alleyway. At the alleyway, the blinding light forces Wallo to shut his eyes. A few thugs comprising of a Ninja, an Orc, and an axe-wielding Knight enter the alleyway.»

Orc: Hey limey boy! You gots a purty gun there! How's about you hand it over... before we take it and make you regret it!

«The scene zooms in on Wallo, who gives off a very deadly stare at the thugs. He gets into his battle pose.»

Wallo: You want the gun? Come and get it, you chav!

«Wallo and the Ninja leaps into the air, and with a splash of blood, Wallo instantly defeats the Ninja thug.

He then fires a bullet from his gun which shines under the sunlight, and the bullet easily pierces through the axe the Knight is holding. With a swift dagger movement from Wallo, the thug falls.

Wallo looks up and sees the Orc thug in the air, wielding both his daggers. The scene shows an eyeball flying. Wallo is taken aback, but then jumps towards the thug. Off the screen, some purple blood spurts out, followed by the Orc thug lying defeated on the ground.

The flashback then ends and switches back to the Assassin's Hideout.»

Shii: ... I kept myself hidden while they fought. I'm... not sure why I did what I did next...
Shii: I heaved him over my shoulder, wincing at the weight. I managed to get him to the healer who'd been taking care of my wounds from playing...
Shii: He worked through the night... but unfortunately, he couldn't save his eye. We went to Vince the Drakel, and he made a metal eye for Wallo. ... Better than new...
Shii: While he was recovering... we talked. We both had similar... skills... and decided to put them to good use. We formed the Assassin's Guild and started training new members.
Shii: We've been a team ever since...
Shii: ... Until now, I guess.

    «There's a short pause.»

Shii: ... If you ever need my help, you can count on me. As for what's next... I don't know. We'll think of something.

«The scene fades off. You obtain 1 of the 4 Level 10 Assassin skills available, Kiss of Death.»
    Knock sense into them both

    «You»: ...you're both fools.
    Wallo (in unison): ...Beg pardon?
    Shii (in unison): *blink blink*
«You»: Pfah. You heard me. You're. Both. Fools.
«You»: Wallo, you've got the experience it takes to make things run. And whatever else tonight did, you proved you've still got "it."
«You»: Shii, you're talented, but let's face it, you're not exactly the sort to inspire the trust of any guild members when you'd just as soon listen to the voices in your head and stab any of us.
    «You»: ... Just for fun.
«You»: You've both been bickering since the day I walked into the guild's office, and it's a waste of energy that could be used to... I dunno... KILL THINGS.
«You»: You should be using your strengths together instead of wasting them on the infighting. You're ridiculous.
Wallo: Why you cheeky know-it-all upstart...
Shii: Heehee... before you and I finish this, Wallo, wanna deal with «You»?
Wallo: It would be my pleasure.Shii: *pant* You're pretty good.

    «Shii faces Wallo.»

Wallo: Quite. ...And speaking of "pretty good," «You»'s right. We made a pretty good team, Shii.
Shii: ... Yeah. We always have.
Wallo: How about it, then? Are we back in business?
Shii: Well, someone has to keep you on your toes.
Wallo: And someone has to keep you from listening too much to Yajuu and going on a murderous rampage.
Shii: Awwww. You really DO care!

«The scene fades away and switches to the outside of Bloody Ruffian, where Wallo, Shii and you are.»

«You»: So... I'm a full member now, right?
    Wallo: Yes. And?

    «You turn to face Wallo.»

«You»: Okay. ...So where is it?
Shii: Did I hit you on the head too hard?
«You»: No, seriously. Where is it?
Wallo: Where is WHAT, you muppet?
«You»: You know, the sacred artifact of The`Galin that gives us our mandate on who to kill. The one that spits out the coded message that you guys interpret for our targets.
Shii: Okay, I'm ABOUT to hit you on the head too hard. I do NOT look like that dork Wesley Gibzard.
«You»: Fine, so that's not it. Then what ancient prophecy are we the keepers of? And who wants to stop it?
Wallo: ...That's it. You're cut off. No more powdered sugar for you.
Shii: Yay! I call dibs! ^_^
Wallo: Oh, bloody... HOW do you manage to actually PRONOUNCE that?!
    Shii: ^____^"
Wallo: Now you're just messing with me, you little tart...
«You»: So... you mean we're not the guardians of some ancient lore, and there's no grand plot of global historical significance?
«You»: Neither is there any mythical process we oversee, nor any Enemy against whom we defend the world?
Shii: How in Yajuu's Name did you find our office when Krovesport Asylum is at the other end of town? Where would you get that sort of idea?
Shii: We kill things. People even give us money to do it. It's a total dream job.
Wallo: At the end of the day, we're really no different than any adventurer who kills monsters. They do it for money too, or Robina Hood would be out of a job...
Wallo: ...and, I daresay, scrambling like a fish tossed up on the shore by a wave.
Shii: We just get contracted to kill SPECIFIC things instead of wandering in the wilderness like a bunch of fools.
Wallo: Who'd want to wander around in a forest or whatever anyway? That's just silly...

«The three of you walk away and the scene fades away. You obtain 1 of the 4 Level 10 Assassin skills available, Assassin's Creed.»
