Taken from a discussion I'm (trying to) spark on the Twilight Sucks boards.

quote:

This comes from someone who has been indulging on one too many game of Europa Barbarorum. Lonchophoroi Hippeis = Medium Hellenic Cavalry, a historical unit and packs quite a punch in the game.

Okay, now for the question. Have you ever tried to incorporate historical terms into your story for no reason except for the Rule Of Cool and then try to come up with proper justifications in hindsights?

I have. Nowhere else is this clearer seen than in my novel. First, I "invented" a beam weapon (read: taking a generic beam weapon from you-know-what-anime-it-is) and then called it the Pilum Launcher. And then I went out of my way to justify why it is so called. Much technobabble will ensue:

- It is a disposable beam launcher that has exactly two shots per piece. Similar to the standard arms of a Roman legionary.
- It uses a fusion battery that can project these two shots in the form of long, thin, armor-piecing/energy-field-piercing beams in very quick succession, but at very short range. Again, similar to the Roman pila.
- And finally, each Mechanized Frame goes into battle carrying one of these, clipped to the inside of their anti-beam physical shield. Which is where the Romans kept their clutches of pila.

There goes my example. What about you?

Hopefully I can spark the discussion here as well.

Nah, none of that for me. My weapons are rather basic, usually - swords, daggers, and the like. I'm not into military stuff, so I can't have much Fun With Acronyms, either. Ah well.

Not really. I do, however, use Latin to create names for my characters(unoriginal, yes.)

Does making the first name randomly and then making the last name as a thinly disguised reference to a chemical element based on their nature count? (I heard Shakespeare did this with the ever-so-epic Mercutio.)

horus: How would Mercutio relate much to an element? The only one that comes to mind is mercury, and that brings to mind thermometers, forget the jokester he was.

You know of the Mad Hatter, I assume. They used mercury for something in their hats and, in turn, lost some mental function. I can only assume that Mercutio was named so for his Queen Mab speech (in which he talks fairy-tale-ish in the beginning only to progress to something a little disturbing). But I guess it's just over-analyzing. xP

Besides, I guess people would only spot these little things by looking up something on Wikipedia and over-analyzing anyway. <.<

horus: Oh, don't worry, I'm going to have to write 15-page papers on people's names if I get into AP British Literature and Composition. The teacher loves 15-page papers on insignificant details. It's just as well I learn how to overanalyze now.

And another recipe from me for a combining mecha.

Hastatus (ハスタタス) + Princeps (プリンケプス)+ Triarius (トリアリアス) = Praetoria Reformata (プレートリア・レフォーマタ).
