I suggest this because it is often hard to tell whether someone's gender on the forums. (When talking about them in the third person, I often find myself calling them "(s)he.") Occasionally you can tell by the avatar, but not always.

... or you could, you know, ask them? Most people are happy to reply if it helps remove confusion, and those who wouldn't... probably wouldn't put it on their profile either.

@Zaier I believe Ancient J was referring to the Forums and not AQW Ingame.

Does it make a relatively large difference on the information/discussion you are putting forth on what the person's gender is? I know in some cases it is helpful but not overall essential.
But like Khimera said, most people would be happy to tell you if you had any confusion as to that persons gender.

Yes, these type of confusions happen a lot of times. Of course some names clearly suggest a boy/girl is behind the screen but how would a little optional field called "Gender" hurt?
I think Ancient J has a good point.

It can't hurt to have one. It's just easier to see someone's gender than to have to memorize everyone's genders or having to ask every time before you post if you don't want to make a mistake. It's not a neccessity; it would just be helpful.

Yes, but like how I'm about to display, most people don't mind specifying their gender for instance;

@DragonYugi: Allos, I'm a 'he'. =)

This means less work for the Forum Coders and if anything more communication between forumites, which is a good thing. As long as people aren't too uptight about it. =)

I agree it's much helpful if we can add that. Normally people can spam few page just because "I'm girl/boy but I like this avatar" and PM some time annoy other than "happy"

Does the gender of a person really matter on a game related forum? In most situations that come to my mind it's completely irrelevant. I do admit that I sometimes get a bit irked when somebody refers to me as "he", but it's a minor annoyance, and doesn't really affect the outcome of the conversation we're having. As for pointing out one's gender, if you really feel like it, I guess you can include your gender in to the post/message you send, but nobody will believe you anyway. Why would a specific field on your profile be any more believable?

Earendl, a specific field would be rather believable. Sure, some people might trick other people and put the opposite gender in their profile but that is their problem. A gender field is much like the "What do you like best about AE games" field already existent in profiles.
I know it takes some codding to add a new field but it won't kill or hurt anybody. It is more helpful than bad.

Maybe
you can ask them or at least figure what gender they are
from the avatar. you can also just ignore that and call them by
their screen name? solved the problem for me kinda. ^^

 I don't understand the purpose of such a field. You shouldn't be treating anyone differently because of their gender in the first place.

It isn't about treating someone in a way or another. It is about recognising the gender of the one you are talking to or about.
Extreme Enigma's suggestion isn't really the best solution since posting someones username over and over again gets too repetitive and tiring.

 I do not see the purpose of this.
The only beneficial purpose I see is fewer confusions with pronouns, which can be avoided anyway with careful wording.

The main cons I see are
Flaming based on gender, discrimination, harassment, etc.

To counter this, you could say that there would be an option to not share.
But if people do not share, then what would be the purpose of such an option?

 And while referring to a person in plural is grammatically incorrect, it's done commonly enough anyway that most people would understand that if you say "Person A takes a lot of pride in their accomplishments," it means the same thing as "Person A takes a lot of pride in his or her accomplishments." There actually are gender-neutral pronouns in other languages, so the precedent exists. :p

Well it gets a bit embarrasing sometimes, for example (true story): I did not know Icetail24 was a girl. That was simply weird, and I wasn't the only one...

It also gets slightly annoying. Once upon a time...

I was talking to King Darxonic about some topic on a thread before he knew me on youtube. It went like:

ME: Hey!
Darx: Hello
Me: Bla bla
Darx: Bla bla
*more bla blaing*
*Later some other guy came*
Other: ....Kipper said that she...
Me: She? I'm a guy...

Darx would've corrected her (I asked) if he knew I was a guy. She thought I was a girl because I had an avatar of Lady Tomo's cat.

I mean, Although you could simply just ask, I could be offending.
Say you are a guy, then you ask "Hey are you a girl?" Kind of offensive right?
Plus, PMing takes up space, so imagine half of the forum members making PMs just to ask for their gender.
ALOT right? So we could eliminate that by simply adding a gender field. And obviously it could be hidden.

What's offensive in asking if the person you're talking with is a girl? Face to face it probably would be awkward at least , but over the net...

Mistaken gender isn't anything new, not in the net, not in real life. There's a simple remedy for that. Either correct it by telling that you're a girl/boy, or forget it.

Having a gender field on your profile and giving the option to hide it? Ummm... Since most will either hide it, or lie their gender, what's the point of that field?

I still haven't found a good enough reason to support this, though I fully admit that in some obscure cases it could help out when formatting a message directed to a certain forumite. I automatically refer everybody as "he" if I don't know their gender for sure, and it looks like 99% of time I'm correct.

pm not only might seem "offense" (ya, some too "weird" to feel) also take space and clean up pm might waste more time since it might end up with 3-4 pm, and I hate delete pm because it's normally slow (much slower than load text of full pic)

 Well, one could always say s/he, I don't see the problem, really.
I've been mistaken for a guy several times... even back when my name was Princess_Hallie, but it hasn't bothered me much.
It's not like an insult or anything, it's just a mistake or a question ^^
