I am writing a story set on earth quite a bit of time in the future, sort of in a re-set of reality. Although much of the knowledge from the previous world was preserved. I had a fantastic idea the other day for an element of the world to being that much of the music that is listened to by it's people (it's all live from street performers, they don't have mp3 devices) is the music from the last hundred years of earth as it currently is.

On the one hand, as a radio DJ I have a nice lexicon of lyrics, and appropriate places in the story's plot for these to come up are already abundant in my head. On the other however if this ever ends up being published I am going to have to insert a lot of footnotes explaining who wrote the couple of lines of song I quoted from. On the third hand it might actually be cool for the reader to see a references to his/her world crop up every once in a while, and cooler for them to be able to seek out the music in the novel and enjoy it.

What do you guys think? Should it be shied away from? Would you find something like this in a book interesting? Have you ever done something similar in a work of your own?

Heh, I had it surgically attached. Two simply wasn't enough for all of the points I wanted to make! xD. It is amazing what you can do with a columbian surgeon and a whole lot of money these days.

Seriously though, are you aware of any possible legal complications with that? How much is too much free use? There are sites entirely devoted to making add revenue by posting song lyrics, but I feel that somehow this is different.

Well I am no lawyer, but I believe that as long as you write for non-profit and you cite the origins of the lyrics, there is no harm. However, if you want to publish this, I think you would have to talk to a representative or something. In any case, talk to a publisher for more information as they are better informed about these kind of things.
