So the idea was that the RP would take place in Alternate Lore where Xitra's the dictator of Battleon. You would play as a group of Xitra's enforcers that have been sent to a nearby town to deal with a shapeshifting monster that's been reeking havok. Here's where it gets intresting... the shapeshifter is one of the players who have been selected at random, blending in with the group! I will collaberate with whoever's been chosen and, through PM, I'll post whatever the monster's done (so that you can't metagame and know who did it)

The goal is to use logic and reason to figure out who's the shapeshifter behind the attacks, however due to the iron rule of thier dictator, not everyone would want to be completely honest about thier past or actions. Many people have tried to resist Xitra's uprising and still hold resentment twords him in private. Also, be warned! If the players choose wrong then they will kill an innocent member of thier group and you will need every man you can get to take on the shapeshifter.

There are a few problems with the idea. For one, players could potentially just PM each other until they figure out who the shapeshifter is. Also, if the shapeshifter goes inactive for too long I'll have to figure out a way to switch someone else with the shapeshifter, killing thier original character off and probably showing the body of the man who the shapeshifter was originally mimicing so everyone knows it's not them. And if this happens a few times, it could get pretty confusing pretty fast....

I want to know what you think because I havn't seen a detective-style RP like this before and alternate AQ seems like the perfect setting for this. I'm sure there are probably a few unforseen problems with it or confusion about how this would work.

I like this idea. The detective-take on it seems pretty fun and I think I would express interest in a roleplay about it.

I think our community is honest and respectful enough to NOT PM each other about the shapeshifter though; I would not worry about that. We'd all be in it for the fun of being a detective, and I doubt any of us would ruin that.

Also, just pick a shapeshifter who you know has a good track record with posting when needed and someone who everyone knows; don't pick a new RPer. That should deal with the last problem.

The thing is, I don't want the shapeshifter to be too obvious. And it's probably a good idea to have a backup plan anyways, just in case.... Real life gets in the way sometimes. I lost power for about a week last year. Well, good to know it's an intresting concept! Hopefully, if the new RPA ends up proving me wrong, it could grow into something people will remember for quite a while.

The rest of the RP idea is a typical murder mystery, and kind of simple. I would have readily passed it over, if it wasn't for this:
quote:

not everyone would want to be completely honest about thier past or actions
My personal tastes often clash with those of the general RP community, but this is something I am really excited about seeing. Murder mysteries are fun, certainly, but this is really an RP more than it is a murder mystery.

I hope that when the hosts are approved, one will take this idea into consideration (or if deth is a host, that he will implement it himself). Even if it is nothing like this, the idea that everyone in the RP has something to hide, not just the murderer, makes it that much easier to portray the murderer as a guilty man/woman/entity and not a suave killer who appears innocent but is actually deadly, as most murder-mystery murderers are out of necessity.

I think this is a great idea. In a language camp I went to we would often play games like this. Everyone got different cards allowing them to do certain things. There were the werewolves who would kill a person every night, the townspeople who would choose who to kill, and a bunch of other odd characters who had special abilities. There was a witch I think, as well as Cupid and a dude with a crystal ball. This sounds like a somewhat simpler version. I'm all for it!

@Legendium, that is not an RP but a forum game called "Mafia."

You can look it up on Google.

@Arthur

The one I played had a different name.....
But that's aside the point. Such games can easily be turned into forum RPs, simply by adding detail and making a story beside it.

In addition, having a Mafia-style RP could draw a few people from the UCaG boards. That would be fun, to have a great deal of new blood.

...

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD

Having too many roles might make it a little confusing, but definitely having something beyond the "Shapeshifter kills everyone" would be really awesome.

@Starstruck: People form the UCaG would be interested, but I doubt they would want to go through the RPA right now.

Also, since we don't want anyone to know who the shapeshifter is, perhaps they could write a post, but send it to the Host and the Host can post it. That way each player can see who and why the Shapeshifter is killing a particular character, and what happens - all the while the players won't know who it is.

To clarify, there is a Roleplaying version of Mafia known as "Werewolf", which is probably what you're referring to. Beyond the obvious fantasy reskinning of the game and the abilities, there's another fairly big difference between the two. Rather than just play the roles that Mafia would dole out at the beginning of each game, Werewolf involves taking each role and making it into a character that will be played while simultaneously fulfilling its necessary task. It gives the whole situation a lot more substance and makes each action mean that much more, which is why games of Werewolf are popular both on Roleplaying forums and on IRC (it's also fairly easy to just pull games together on the latter).

However, it is fairly important to note that whoever's hosting a Werewolf game should make sure that all of the characters being made would actually follow the lynching procedure required by the game's bounds. If people don't want to carry out what's necessary, the whole RP gets bogged down. When you get right down to it, honestly, Werewolf is more of a SemiRP than an actual RP, since the roles assigned need to be played.

Hope that that helps!

I like the fact that dethhollow is using an original idea though, about the shapeshifter and stuff instead of a werewolf or the mafia and such. I think dethhollow should work on this RP and when he feels it is ready and he would like to host it, he should. The mystery and whodunnit idea interests me, cause we'd have to work as a team.

Also I want to share this quote that I thought of but don't know where, so:
"Never roleplay as your character; let the character roleplay as himself."

I seriously havn't looked at the forums since my last post, great to see other people take intrest!

Good idea, TJByrum, but I'm one step ahead of you :)

Also, I felt like it would be best if players chose thier own secret. After all, if your character's a paladin who would've been useful against Xitra, then it would be wierd for his secret would be something like spying on Xitra or something.... I'm sure people can come up with some intresting stuff on thier own. However, I think I might make one role for the red herring character. Someone who would seem to be clearly the guy everyone would suspect, like a power-hungry necromancer or something and would just be a general jerk, but since the Shapeshifter's randomly decided he will probably not be the one. A little overused in mystery stories? Probably.... But since there's still the possibillity that he IS the one, I think it could work well.
