What has graphic design come to?

If you've been around for a while you'd probably have the same question

You mean how all graphics communities are slowly dying into nothingness and the standard of good art is slipping?

Ah, I miss the old days. Irrel, Phoenix, TarVanimelde (still around, just not as prevalent, but still kicking ass), Metal, etc. Back in the old school. Now it's all trends and the same 3 or 4 styles. Le sigh.

Tagging is slowly fading away because it's not as useful anymore and there are less people joining than quiting.

Actually I was talking about all these garbage edit things that people get their pantys in a bunch over.

But your replies are good too.

The REALLY good tagging forums with the older people on it are pretty much invite only, or you have to apply to get on the forum. I love it.

Tormentor, since I started graphics when I was about 14 (im 20 now) I have seen people take pictures and edit them and everyone is all into them. I really don't understand it, because to me its like saying "Hey! look! I can take someone elses work, change a few things, and it looks SWEET."

Mind you, many high level artists love their minimalism edits.

My favorite is the render over a found background with some text.. Though it is art, it is terrible to be honest.

This, among time constraints, is why I quit doing graphics... It doesn't appeal as much as it used to, and people like kevin, max, ed, and yourself tormentor are the only reason I even continue to click onto this site. people who actually are crafting and honing their skills is why i care i suppose.

That's what just sets me off too.
It's like "Dude, you didn't even do anything. How can you feel accomplished at all from this"

I know it can be considered art as many things can (you can call buttering toast art) but I just see it as a piece of garbage.

Foamy, did you come into the digital art world creating everything from scratch? Or did you have the same learning process as everyone else?

The way most people start (like myself) is to take a premade background, a render, and text and throw it together. And people grow from there as they learn more. Yes, I'll admit, I don't see the skill or artistry behind edits. But it took me weeks - if not months - to get past the stage of just throwing text and renders on premade backgrounds.

So just because you've evolved past that point, remember where you - and everyone else - came from.

I didn't do it because I couldn't get it right so I just opted into making my own c4ds and fractals and just getting stocks and rendering them or getting a render from PR

My first tag. background is created from scratch (terribly i may say haha), not used from a premade. My next tags were pixel stretches, and then onto other things. I saw what scalper, phalis, fade, irrel etc... were making and I thought to myself "I gotta learn how to do that!" I knew that it wasn't that simple, so i skipped the starting step.

And this was my first tag. Premade background + render + text.

I learned slowly, at my own pace, and took me weeks to get out of using premade stuff.

Just because I, or anyone, spends an inordinate amount of time (by your reckoning) learning how to move forward, doesn't and shouldn't make it garbage.

But that's just my idea of it all.

i was around after these people, but their work was amazing.
But the people who had me buzzing when i started out were TOTR (those huge c4d tag things were inspiring) zenron, tormenter, _dep, acolytic.

just had a quick look in the feedback place now (also the new layout is a reason i couldnt come back here) and it was so dead!

i was excited to have a lurk and see how people were doing, but it just upset me!

it's sad to see this section so dead, I try to update once every few months mostly out of nostalgia since this forum is the reason I got into art way back in 09

I wanted to revisit this place. Holy ****, I joined this forum in 2005. TWELVE YEARS AGO. I was a dumb little thirteen year-old who had just tried Adventure Quest, but the forums grabbed me hook, line and sinker. The RP forums were great, but the art that people created was even more amazing, and it changed my life's direction.

I learned how to use Photoshop making ****ty little sigs for this board. Now, I'm making my living as a professional graphic designer, working for Fortune 500 companies, far away from little old Australia where I would log onto the Battleon forums on my dodgy little ADSL connection. I actually figured I should go back when I was using a particular tool in the latest version of Illustrator, and remembered that I learned how to do this from this forum, as a thirteen year-old. This place, and the people who taught me a horde of tricks when I was a newbie with a garbage little sig shop, literally determined the course of my life. When you think about it that way, it's terrifying.

So, Mods - and Artix Entertainment - thank you so much for this place. I wouldn't have become the person I am today without your game, and its forums, and the crazy little tricks I learned, making signatures for a tiny little web game I used to quietly play in high school. As crazy as it is, this forum has given me skills I have used, and will continue to use, for the rest of my life. I'm doing this as my job. How crazy is that? Your little browser game, unknowingly, had a massive influence on my life (even though now, I couldn't even remember the location of this forum and had to google 'anime web browser RPG artix' to jog my memories.)

Thanks for providing this place, fam. Seriously.
