i would of picked my oc for a board design but the pic of bally hoo holding the strawberry cake (on the main page. or a classic version)would make a better design

hope the donation contest happens this year as that would help me out

Every year, I enjoy the Golden Developer Ticket and the designs put forward during the surfboard contest (a personal favourite is the Golden Whale board, and I still use it). However, I don't think combining them is necessarily the best choice. The idea would be well-received provided the resulting contest incorporated the best bits of each, but I don't think that's the case here.

One of the major benefits of the surfboard contest was getting to see everyone's submissions, a community putting forward the weird and wonderful. Sometimes, those weird and wonderful designs even won (once again, I refer to the Golden Whale Kneeboard). This year, that can't happen because no submissions are necessary. Furthermore, it was one of the few regular contests where anyone had a decent chance to win. It isn't possible to, for example, buy hundreds of GGB to vastly increase your odds over the casual player. There are few contests across the year with a similar system (Specifically, the back-to-school gear), so to remove it makes the situation worse.

Unfortunately, the Golden Developer Ticket doesn't escape unscathed either. A major benefit of that contest was being able to design whatever item you wanted. Granted, similar contests have offered reskins rather than full item designs and I respect that choice (for a number of reasons, one being preventing items from becoming incredibly overpowered). The combining of the contests means the prize is now heavily restricted to a surfboard design. Although it's clear that a number of people enjoy designing surfboards, not everyone wishes to do so (I believe traditional weapon types are usually preferred, though do correct me if I'm wrong). For that reason, the prize is nowhere near as appealing as it has been in previous years. Even when the item was a reskin, for example the Voidsplinter Sunderer, at least that lucky winner had a chance to completely redesign the appearance to his/her liking.

One of the points that isn't explicitly clarified is whether or not the contest winner can choose the effects of the board they create. The wording implies that it's simply an art redesign but, in my opinion, it would be sensible to allow the winner to choose the effect as well. That would open up some room to manoeuvre, and make the contest more appealing as a result. Nevertheless, the old saying "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" really applies here; the separate contests were popular in their own right and never needed to be combined in the first place.

I dunno about clear that a number of people enjoy designing surfboards with the amount of submissions we had last year. The way contests are run has changed and there is a lot more involved to run one. When we do a contest, if hardly anyone participates... well that's the reason I'm trying something different this year.

As far as the prize, the winner can select:

Between Kneeboard, Surfboard, or Shortboard.
Melee/Ranged/Magic
Element
Functionality (obviously nothing game-breaking)
Custom design

Yes, Tibbles will be visiting again this Summer.

Firstly, thank you for the clarification, and I'm glad to see that the prize includes functionality as well as art. It definitely increases the value of the prize.

Secondly, clearly, a low number of contest submissions nullifies my point regarding "if it isn't broken don't fix it"; clearly a new way forward needs to be reached. With that in mind, my suggestion would still be to avoid restricting a Golden Developer Ticket contest reward to a surfboard. It's not a traditional weapon, and part of what makes the ticket so appealing is the ability to create (or reskin) whatever you want.

Hollow, how about if the winner would prefer to select a Sword because he/she doesn't like to use a Kneeboard/Surfboard/Shortboard?

I'm sure, many of us would prefer to use a Sword instead of a Kneeboard/Surfboard/Shortboard.

Will you select a new one lucky winner? Or, can the winner keep the prize regardless of not being used? Or?

then shouldn't that *winner* not have participated then? the contest clearly states that the winner gets to design a *SURFBOARD*.

you wouldn't expect anybody else to join a *FREE TRIP TO PARIS* raffle and then when he wins he suggest another place to go instead of Paris just because he doesn't like it there.

Not a fan of surfboard only, never thought they were cool anyways. But I'll be opening up GGBs anyways so whatever.

One question, can the winner send you a description and have it created by you? Or do they have to design it all by themselves?

Personally I like surfboards, but only if they have something a little special on them. I think it would be cool to have something humorous or retro art or something with significance, as opposed to a generic something. Of course I'm biased, but I'd happily spend GGBs on *interesting* designs.

The winner can send their own design, use examples, or just explain their idea. Similar to a custom face order.

As do I. The artwork will feature a buff Hans with a fierce mullet posing with a hammer, animated to wink once in a while. It will be auto-hit Death element, causing the player to take more damage in order to give them a max boost to their swag or heal for part of the damage their pets and guests do; it would be fully inaccurate and random in damage lean, and its master craft effect would be the anime Wow sound effect playing whenever you moonwalk all over the monster.

You can use all of the skills in one turn, yes. However, each skill can only be used once per turn.

@Bolter, +1 here on that request. I bought the painting but it would be nice to have something else in there as well. Given the pet is in Warlics already so I'm not sure what they'd add. Perhaps Hollow could add something for us tho.
