Yeah, I know, it's bad, I've neglected this character for a long time.

Few things out of the gate: I'm not getting rid of my ability to cast spells, and I don't want to be a glass-cannon or beast-master.

That being said, I think I should probably take my strength and distribute it to other stats, no?

Welcome back!

As you note the first thing you'll want to do is re-work your stats. As of engine updates 45.73 and 45.77, DEX is no longer considered a "necessary" stat for BTH and stat damage. You'll only want to retain DEX if you plan to utilize Ranged-type damage. Otherwise it will not do anything for you. Stats also go up to 250 so it's best to maximize your stats to that level if you're still at the old 200 mark.

Your stat build if you don't plan to be a beast master or glass cannon AND are probably going to be 250 INT/END/LUK or 250 INT/DEX/END. The former is the classic tank mage setup, while the later is a hybrid setup that will utilize ranged attack damage alongside the occasional spell/skill/buff from INT. Though 0 END builds are actually quite common these days as battles at the max level tend to not take as long END has fallen out of favor aside from backlasher builds, but those use CHA in order to maximize the reflection damage. However, the tank mage is still an extremely favorable build because it's by far the safest build to play. You virtually cannot lose ever due to your massive HP alongside all the other benefits that INT gives you.

All that aside, your basic inventory is probably going to look like this: (Trying to keep as much of your original inventory as much as possible)

Taken from the Equipment Guide. PS: The AQWikia is an excellent resource for AQ and has all the latest information

Fire / Ice: Carnafex Scepter (Tank Mage) / Carnafex Spear (DEX Hybrid)

Summon Essence of Carnage (Defiance Stand)
Archmage Research
Purple Rain
Moonwalker's Grace (DEX Hybrid)
Invincible Star (Seriously, this should be in your main inventory, it's THAT good!)
Destruction Burst
Your Body Heals at the Speed of Light (DEX Hybrid)
Samukematsuri Caltrops (DEX Hybrid)
Spectral Chains (Tank Mage)
Siphon (Tank Mage)

Pets:
Angra Linnorm
Spotter Drake
Underwyrmling (If wicked king is giving you a hard time on your main character, just create a new character and own him on a low level. Ideally somewhere between levels 15-29)
Fae Wanderer
Cometoid Jelly (Do you have another character that has this? You can swap out this one for the Ice/Energy versions. Then you can have 2 of these if you do this via the account manager)

Anyways, this is but the first set of recommendations. If you're having trouble finding these items or getting them, reply and I'll see how I can help you forward.

I re-statted and Akriloth has been beaten like he owed me money.

Working on the gear now.

It goes well enough.

Also, to Correct you, PD? The Power armor is *not* melee locked. I'm using it right now with my Champion's Apex, in magic mode, and it's dealing magic damage.

I should be clear - Tempest Power Armor's Overdrive Toggle (The skill that locks your attacks to energy and gives you celerity) is Melee locked. You can however, attack normally with the normal attack. Since you still do use ranged weapons, you could technically still use it for the ranged skill (Missile Barrage, this is weapon-based, but this is ranged locked!). Just the overdrive mode won't be as effective as that derives its stats from STR.

As for Malkroth, you could temporarily get Amulet of Drakonnan for its fire resistance. A setup that worked for me is:

Armor: Torontosaurus Rex (You could swap this with Pyromancer Bloodmage situationally. Rex is found in the Frostval Village Shop)
weapon: Rainbow Raygun (scramble resist to fire weakness with luckily moderate resistance to wind. Found at Adder's Forge in Rip in the Sky) / Haunted Dragonlord Charge (When using Basket Breath) / Any generic weapon.
Shield: Any Generic Fire Shield
Misc: Amulet of Drakonnan / Helm of Drakonnan
Pet: Fairy Godmother / Cometoid Jelly

The strategy is to of course, first scramble Malkroth's resistances so that he is weak to fire. After that you should be free to spam Basketbreath with Haunted Dragonlord Charge for SP, and then use any generic weapon that Malkroth is weak to afterwards. FAiry Godmother or Cometoid Jelly ought to allow you to sustain yourself for the longer battle.

I will make one small comment - Pyromancer Bloodmage for bosses is actually quite poor. Many bosses these days have damage caps and the HP cost from Bloodmages usually makes them a poor choice for bossing. Boss battles in general require the player to play more strategically. Many bosses also have mechanics to prevent players from status bombing (Boss Boost) or stunning them into oblivion (Freedom). Nuking in general is only something that should be done for normal monsters, and in particular in situations where using massive amounts of resources won't get you punished. Dealing a lot of damage is good, but since you only heal every 2 battles it should be done conservatively.

Maybe one more un-solicited comment - It's not my place to tell anyone how to play but Ranged support is still lacking compared to Melee/Magic. In particular by going ranged instead of melee you lose access to a variety of interactions like Tempest Power Armor's overdrive, easily accessible options for Auto-Hit weapons, access to Haunted/Eclipsed Dragonlord Barrier, Access to Blood/Zerker Blades (alongside many other weapons that are Melee/Magic only), and a plethora of other important interactions. Ranged support is projected to improve over time but I actually don't recommend playing Ranger, and especially not Ranger Hybrid given the current deficit of options.

My recommendations in that sense were actually hampered by the fact that many of the very good Ranger items I would have recommended are seasonal items (Alchemical Unity, Fortune Thief, Summer Dryad, etc). And I am not in the business of making you wait around to get the best items. I could give you another set of recommendations if you decide that using Ranged isn't giving you results and you'd like to go either Purely INT Mainstat or INT/STR Hybrid. I could even recommend not going 250 END based on your definition of "not glass cannon". You're losing a lot by not investing anything into LUK which not only makes it impossible to get LUKy Strikes, you miss more (because BTH relies partially on LUK), and you're much less likely to get the initiative (even with the Ambush Potion). You could think about going 50 END / 200 LUK in this regard.

I appreciate your advice and will take it on board as I tinker around with my build.

As for your comment being unsolicited, I appreciate it all the same. I asked you for help, and you're helping me! You're being very kind by devoting so much effort to this, and I'm very, very grateful!
