Book 3: Convergence - Crash and Burn
Hey there, heroes!

With your help, the Magesterium has managed to bring down Jaania's airship in the wilds of Hawkscry. Now, you and your allies must move to secure the crash site...

But what will you find? What remains of the airship?

Fight your way through the wilds of Hawkscry with your Magesterium allies in tow to find out!

Head over to Outpost Yeden to play this week's quest: Crash and Burn!

Also this week, we have a number of bugfixes and adjustments.

Inventory changes and fixes:
  • Builds and Outfits can now have custom names up to 16 characters each.
    • Build and Outfit names are saved locally, as Builds and Outfits themselves are.

  • Hovering over a Build or Outfit will display its name.
  • You can rename Builds and Outfits when saving them.
  • Equipping an item no longer resets search results or selected Build/Outfit.
  • Fixed an issue where the text "Item Details" could turn into "Item Detail" when filtering by equipment type.
  • Fixed an issue where having less than a full page of items would leave items highlighted even after unequipped.
  • Fixed an issue where the selected item highlight would remain when selecting a Build/Outfit.
  • Fixed an issue where changing equipment filters, or selecting a Build/Outfit, or otherwise searching would not properly reset the item details.
  • Fixed an issue where selecting a Build/Outfit, then using equipment filters or searching would not deselect the Build/Outfit.
Typos/Adjustments:
  • Fixed a typo in the description of the Jimmy the Eye pet.
  • The Minivolt pet is now labeled as Energy element, instead of Metal.
  • The Marshmallow Pip pet is now labeled as Fire element, instead of Light.
  • Fixed a pronoun issue and mispelled "perpetrator" in the Book 3 Swordhaven intro.
  • Fixed a typo where Cloak of Deidro had "nature" res instead of "Nature".
  • Fixed a typo where the Gorillaphant Ivory Ring had "nature" res instead of "Nature".
  • Fixed a typo where the Pretty Pretty Princess Ring had "nature" res instead of "Nature".
  • Fixed a typo in the Hanging Vines house item description.
  • Tentatively fixed an issue in Book 1 Warlic's tent where certain quest names were missing letters.
And then anything else I may have forgotten!

And that's all for this week!

spoiler:

I think Sepulchre sure regrets showing off his DOOM vacuuming skills now... was so worried for Yix there for a moment. Also feel bad for (former) King Alteon, the guy now knows what happened to Valen. Wonder how that will work out in the next few coming weeks?

spoiler:

When I said I hoped Yix could get a body, this wasn't quite what I had in mind! Good thing Amadeus was there to purify him. For a bit I feared our favourite Gnome-tato was lost to us.

The fight itself was certainly more work than I'm used to putting into story bosses, but Riftwalker and a change of gear made short work of it. I think my one gripe is that the guest's turns couldn't be skipped. Alteon dealing damage during the Consuming Doom phases and Amadeus healing it between those phases wasn't really ideal.

It was interesting seeing Alteon's reaction to Sepulchure. I was half-expecting outrage or anger, but pity also makes sense. I imagine he feels somewhat responsible for him, similar to Warlic and Alexander. Maybe if we're lucky we'll get some insight into their shared history, and maybe even see where exactly Gravelynn fits into it... Probably just wishful thinking though.

AND let's not forget about Jaania finally seeing that Doom device! I wonder how this'll change her next steps.

Excited to see where it goes from here!

Well that was a bit unexpected
spoiler:

I'm curious as to what exactly the Magesters are cooking up to take down Akanthus down a peg because it doesn't sound anywhere near ready to do what needs to be done yet.

On the Rose side of things, it's refreshing to see Jaania finally start questioning Akanthus' actions at least regarding the Doom Core, if only a little, based on what Warlic and crew warned about. However, its clear that moment where Akanthus defended Jaania from the ambush from the wind elves is still primarily clouding her judgement regarding her general. One can only hope that closer they get to the core, and possibly with more time to examine the Doom device, that she'll at least begin to see through him completely, and turn on him even if she has no intentions on dropping her own personal plan with the core.

Ah, but for the real meat and "potatoes" of this quest. It's somewhat unsettling that just a puddle of the essence of doom from the power source seemed to be innately drawn to Yix to corrupt him and him alone. Like it was drawn to a living entity to corrupt as opposed to well any other non-sentient potato there. The worrying aspect here is that if just a small puddle of essence from the Doom Bomb can twist the form and consciousness of a being like Yix then we every reason to suspect that it being detonated in the Mana Core won't just destroy it but in all likelihood pollute it into a construct of Doom just like what happened with Myalos, the Vizalain, and so many others. The consequences for what that could mean for life on Lore will be catastrophic of course.

Fears aside, Alteon now knows that Valen is alive although I find it odd and somewhat touching he referred to him as Valenn instead of Sepulchure. His reaction seems to indicate that he still views Valen as the friend he wasn't able to help rather than the villian that was basically gonna throw the world into darkness. Although, this does make me ponder as to the specifics that led to those events in spite of all we know that led to Valen becoming Sepulchure, Alteon becoming king, and of course how Lynaria fits into that equation when it comes to DF's own timeline anyway.

On the topic of this boss battle:
spoiler:

If you ask me, having to fully heal a boss to prevent it getting a full heal with +300 Bonus and 300% Boost is an utterly ludicrous mechanic to throw at players in the main story when said boss is already getting other buffs on cycle alongside a 50% damage reduction effect. I'm seeing a repeat of the Cryohem situation here and I hope this boss gets significant revisions in the future, or else I can expect a fair number of less experienced players being ruthlessly gatekept out from Book 3's long awaited finale just on this sudden "proto inn challenge".

Finished it by brute-forcing it with old DMK and giving a <Moglins Butt> about Yix. Worked, but there has to be an easier way...

The way I see it, there are two ways to beat the boss:

The first is to nuke it down. My Chaosweaver did so with extreme prejudice.

The second is to wait out several dozen turns, hitting it with darkness (or evil) attacks only. The boss doesn't hit very hard, so if your class has any healing at all, you can last it out. Each subsequent rotation lasts longer, so if you have the patience to add an extra 5-7 turns to the cycle, most classes can beat the potato. It is, admittedly, a massive slog that can take half an hour or more.

On the story side of things, for those who've not played AQW, what's the story with the whole Alden and Valen?

It is easy to forget that the painkiller of the Potato is only tied to direct damage, so the middle option is to partially ignore it with DoTs. It pays to use the Game/Battle Log to minimize the surprises the enemy has in store. My second run on the quest with Ninja was uneventful while listening to Hello, Happy World's and Merm4id's covers of Silhouette and GO!!! respectively (first run was a brute force of WDL). Is the boss fight tough? Vague, yes; tough, no.

@Above, as you're dealing with multiversal shenanigans, do not assume that the lore between Alteon, Lynaria, and Valen in AQW is the same lore in DF (case in point, Gravelynn's kinship with the Doomknight is different on both sectors of the Lorian multiverse). All that can be safely inferred is that they were a power trio.

EDIT: Ran the quest a third time, boss ain't that vague since one of the popups tell you what you need to do to keep it from going out of control. So, doesn't really require too much braincells that Inn fights facilitate.

Wow this quest was a doozy! I didn't expected much (though the delay made me think otherwise) maybe a small cutscene and the hero going to the crash site, beat up a bunch of Rose soldiers and arriving the crash site, THE END. Certainsly didn't thought we would fight with a

Doom corrupted Yix

I'm actually torn up with this boss.
On one hand i liked the new boss mechanics, it was nice to see something totally new in this game, took me by surprise.
On the other hand though i really wish this boss could be nerfed. No matter what i'm one of those players who think main story bosses shouldn't be too hard. At the end of the day in it's core DF is still a kid game and i really doubt kids have much patience for strategy. More importantly if they can't beat this boss they can't go further in the story which IMO either makes them put down the game or cheat. It's the same with the Doom medal and the First Ateala rift Boss. IMO if people want to do extreme fight there should be an extreme button for it and we will probably see this as an Inn challenge soon anyway.

Now the story: Boy oh boy if
spoiler:

one Doom puddle could do this much problem i fear what could the Doom device do if it's unleashed at full power (because we all know it will happen). I'm so interested by it: What is it exactly? Where did Akanthus got it? In which way he plan to use it? Isn't any Doom/darkness creature attracted to it, wants to get it back or wants to detonate it? It's really concerning when you think about how basically a nuke bomb is guarded only by 2 people (because come on the rest of the soldiers can't be trusted to handle it). Yes Akanthus and Jaania is powerful but Jaania only realized now that this device exist and i doubt she fully knows it's deadly power and right now Akanthus guards it.

Wait if the Shadowscythe has devices like this why wouldn't they just teleport them to Lore and detonate them? (Sounds like a nice story for a Friday the 13th war actually) It would kill everything on Lore but they only care about absolute darkness so it would make their invasion much more successful.

Anyway i can see why this release was delayedd a bit, i really enjoyed it.

Yeah, sure *stares at Calamity Saga at the corner among other things*.

Say that when it's easy to forget in a Yu-Gi-Oh! perspective that Lava Golem is an old card (released 2003 in OCG (Japan), 2005 internationally) that can mess with what yugiboomers say as "playground plays" wherein summoning something like BEWD was most likely the bragging right when the aforementioned card game was that slow. It's no longer a matter of how much braincells you want to exert or shut down. At the end of the day, define hard fight as hard is syntactically different from an ambiguous/vague one regardless of how such an argument can devolve into a premise of "improper balancing". Oh, and careful about trying to insert dogmatic notions of "gentleman" into the analysis.
