Discuss the Sneak Peeks given by the the KoO here.

This week:

quote:

Sneak Peek: Tome and Blood: The Scholar Class
By Rayf Drayson

The Scholars of Lore have plied their trade for generations, usually keeping to the background during the major events in Lore's history, happily and dutifully watching, recording, analyzing and studying. Most are content to remain in their libraries and centers of learning, but there are always some who feel the need to go out into the world and study it directly. Their keen powers of observation and adaptation serve them well in the world of Lore, as does their encyclopedic knowledge of the flora and fauna of nature. They are clever, versatile adversaries, able to spot and use their enemies' weaknesses against them.

Soon, you will be able to join their ranks.

Scholar class is the fourth Tier 1, or Base, class, joining Fighter, Rogue and Mage as the foundations of the many-branched class tree in AdventureQuest. Like all base classes, it is designed for characters between the levels of 10 and 30. Where the other three base classes focus on a particular style of combat, the Scholar class focuses on versatility and adaptation. As a Scholar, your greatest asset is your power of observation: learning the enemy's weakness and using it against him or her. Scholar will be a pre-requisite for several classes, even some already in-game, like Dragon Slayer and Shadow Slayer (formerly Vampire Slayer).

Learning the methods of a Scholar is not an easy task. Your mentor in this endeavor, whom you've already met in the game, will send you out into the world to study a variety of different creatures and other denizens of Lore. Your goal: to gain some insight and perhaps adapt that into a new technique to aid you in combat.

For instance, on one quest, you are sent into Darkovia with the goal to study a werewolf during its transformation process. By keenly noting the way its magic infection increases its power, you are able to adapt this observation. Thus, you develop a new technique, one you call a "Lycan Boost," that utilizes some of the same magicks; this allows you to increase your physical power, increasing your STR, END and DEX by a small amount.

On another quest, you travel to Granemor cemetery and observe the wail of the Banshee, noting how it saps your MP, and adapt that to a new technique called "Wailing Blow" that attacks monster MP instead of HP.

You also study a tribe of Orcs, observing their myriad methods of attack firsthand, and manage to acquire some of their weaponry. Thus, you use the Orcish weaponry and attack methods in a new technique called "Orcish Tactics," allowing you to choose your attack type (melee, ranged, or magic).

These are just a few examples of the tasks your class trainer sets forth for you to accomplish, and the new techniques that you, as a Scholar, will develop through your observation and study of these creatures and denizens of Lore.

RedHawk Mage -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 16:54:00)

this sounds very cool can't wait for more advanced classes in this field =]

.Discipline -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 17:27:16)

Personally I think this is the most useful article in the Zardian, not only does it have humor, but also facts that help you better comprehend the direction the game is going in.

Baker -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 17:42:32)

Sounds like an awesome class from the sneak peak. I just wish it were for higher levels so the attacks were stronger; they sound like they'll be fun to learn and use. I like the name change of VS, too.

Enzik -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 18:11:04)

Wow, sounds really neat.
I've always thought, how come monsters can use such awesome attacks, now we're learning from them.
However riddle me this, if we learn from monsters, then take what we learn from them and use it on others, does that not make us monsters ourselves?

.Discipline -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 18:13:37)

Who is to say humans aren't monsters to non-humans. A monster is of definition a creature which is not of your species, which means you harm. To other monsters, we are just that.

darkhappy1 -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 18:29:54)

This seems like an interesting class. I hope it's as powerful as mage. Mage just wastes too much mana. I guess it balances the armor. Good job KoO!

Enzik -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 18:34:27)

O I have no doubt that we to them are a horrible monster.
Every 2nd week or so we slaughter millions for fun and gold.
We are definately monsters. But we do that using our attacks, our weapons and our magic.

Yet if we start using their attacks, their weapons and their magic aren't we in effect becoming them.
Are we learning from them or becoming them, where does the line get drawn?

The Scholars will have to be careful in that regard.

xXxChriscorexXx -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 19:51:03)

I cant wait sure its for low levels but Scholor is what I am in real life so :P

Personally the study of things seems interesting to me perhaps we will learn many things just such as
Lycan Transformation, Vamparism and possably a many other sorted things...

Doklim Falcon -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 20:49:30)

@ Enzik
You bring up an interesting point, but studying how your foes work isn't only a way to learn how to use their attacks. It also allows you to learn of their weaknesses, as shown by the fact that two classes that specialise in killing certain monsters (Vampire/Shadow Slayer and Dragon Slayer) will require the Scholar class. However, you are right to an extent. However, it's only if you get too carried away with this power that you become the monster. Some opponents, however, will no doubt be flattered to find out that you, who is, in effect, the hero of the story, has recognised their skill and is trying to learn it. Also, the definition of a monster is loose to say the least. People think of dragons as monsters, but recently we have met ones that have helped us. After that, do you still think of them as a monster, or a friend? It all depends on how you look at the world.

X/Mercenary -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/20/2007 21:21:52)

Shadow slayer...it didn't make sense to have a class called vampire slayer when it's for destroying both Vampires AND Werewolves.
Scholar class sounds interesting, though it's still a base class.

Clyde -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/21/2007 17:46:16)

Wow, I love the thought of Scholar, mainly because it uses Brains>Strength. [;)]

MCR34 -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/21/2007 19:45:06)

Extreamly kool the way you do the quests and the attacks. Man i hope scholar comes out soon.

TreadLight -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/21/2007 21:59:26)

I really like the descriptions Rayf put in here, they really summed up all the confusion.

For awhile I thought that the Scholar class would be like an extra resistance class, but I'm glad that it'll be done this way rather then a Buffer.

Nessa Ellensse -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 2:16:21)

So any estimate on when soon is?

Genoclysm -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 2:22:36)

Soon usually means within the decade.

Nessa Ellensse -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 11:02:49)

I so love your sarcasm, I am hopeing soon means with in this year

.Discipline -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 11:08:46)

Personally, I hope soon means within the month, but that's just me dreaming out loud again. *slaps self*
Ahh! That's better.
If only I were an E-zine author... *slaps self*
These are becoming more and more frequent...

TreadLight -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 11:10:16)

*Slaps .Discipline*

Well, I'm hoping for at most a month of waiting, I think Scholar would be expected around that time.

iMecha -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 15:24:36)

The Scholar class sounds awesome! I think the Scholar class should also be a pre-requisite for the Beastmaster (along with the rogue). Beastmasters need the knowledge of all the different animals!

Also, if their going to change vampire slayer to shadow slayer, how would it be different from the paladin?

Genoclysm -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 16:57:10)

Paladin's don't go after lycans. Shadow/Vamp slayers target specific types of undead.

xXxChriscorexXx -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 17:02:21)

Also I wouldent call vampires undead, It seems more of a disease to me then a undead so thats how Paladins are diffrent from Shadow/Vamp slayers

Zephyros -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 23:08:36)

Scholar's being worked on, and it'll be the next class released -- soon, not "Soon."

TreadLight -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/22/2007 23:10:05)

Thanks for the heads up, westwind.

I'm hoping for some new sneaky peeks for Issue #8, hopefully something about Golden Set...

Genoclysm -> RE: Issue 7: KoO Sneak Peek (9/23/2007 0:02:52)

I've heard Hollow is getting closer to done. I imagine it is possible for it to come out before the next ezine, so what is the point of a preview for it?
