Cool Dragonz -> [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/3/2008 16:47:37)

I am not making a bit guide, but I just want to give some helpful hints for whom who don't know it yet :D. Remember, these are only hints/tips. If you don't need them, don't read this guide :D.

Smudging/Erase

When you put Smudging to 100%, it will have the same effect as a normal eraser, but you have the quickness to go straight on to smudging, by only lowering the percentage.

The Scaler Tool

This tool is the tool I use the most. It has the quality to take always the layer you selected and if you drag the middle point to another place, it will be able to be used as a move tool too. If you use the move tool, you can move different layers, without needing to switch, but difficult accessable areas need time and punctuality to select and move. With the Scaler tool this won't happen, since it only selects the selected layer.
The Scaler tool isn't my favorite tool if it just ends by this. It has a very positive point. When using the path tool, after finally having "circled" your render, pressed selection from path, some people, especially new artists don't know how to go on. Well, I didn't either, so I tried to do this and that, and came to a solution.

  1. So, press the "selection from path" button.
  2. Press the Scaler Tool button.
  3. Only click once at the "render", which has still that weird line circling around.
  4. Press Scale.
  5. Go to layers » Add new layer.
  6. Press Ctrl + L and open the layer menu.
  7. You will see a transformation and a pasted layer. Delete that Pasted layer and you have rendered your image.

Text/Blend Tool

I don't know if this has been told in another tutorial/guide yet, but here is a handy tip for making your text a bit looking like 3D.

  1. Press the Text Tool.
  2. Type your text :D.
  3. Now copy that layer (Ctrl + C)
  4. Paste it (Ctrl + V) (Now a little animation will show up around your text, the same as shows up when you press Alpha to selection)
  5. Press the blend tool. The colors are white and black, but that's default. To change it into colors, change the foreground and background colors.
  6. Add shapes or any effects (Optional)
  7. Click and drag from the left half to the right half. (To mirror it, press on that little box next to "Ascent")
  8. Add new layer.
  9. I would recommend you to read the previous section, because now we need the scaler tool, to move the default text a bit to left/right/up/down.
  10. You are done! :D

Thanks for reading.

Take Care,

~CD~

thanks CD[:D]

typo, u said rool, not tool

zenron the great -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/3/2008 16:52:31)

nice tut dude. I know the stuff here. but probably alot of people here don't. I dont really agree with the smudging at 100% will be the same as an eraser though

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/3/2008 17:00:51)

Thanks for the positive replies. 4jj, you are in credits, thanks :D. Zenron, it is, the eraser tool has some extra things, but those aren't really necessary ;)

4jj11 -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/3/2008 17:15:01)

thx[:D]

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/4/2008 14:49:11)

No Problem :D

Mc_srewball -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 13:55:47)

quote:

# Typ your text :D.
# Now copy that layer (Ctrl + C)
# Paste it (Ctrl + V)

1- Should be type? (note the e)
2- Can't the duplicate layer function be used overt the copy and pasting of the layer?

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 14:15:33)

Thanks for correcting a typo Mc_Srew. I have put you in Credits :D.
No. Don't duplicate layers, because if you use the blend tool then, it will blend the whole square the text is in. You have to use the blend tool when it's having that animated white-black line around the text ;).

Bone_funny -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 14:22:30)

blakc and white line?doya mean alpha to selection?

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 14:28:08)

Yeah, that animation shows up when you press Alpha to Selection, thanks SoE ;). I have set you in credits :D

Mc_srewball -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 15:11:46)

NP CD, and TY :D (to many acronyms :S).
And kk, didn't know that :P.

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 15:21:52)

That's why I have made this guide/tut :D

Mo -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 15:38:44)

Well, if you have a normal transparency, and you do blend, I'm pretty sure that the transparency actually mixes in with the pic

Mc_srewball -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 15:47:47)

It Does...
don't get what significance that has here though.

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 15:51:48)

I agree that it does. But have you read that piece really good? The next step is that you move the original text a bit to left or right, to make a bit 3D effect :D

Mo -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/6/2008 19:42:03)

Ya, that part confuses me a bit cause whenever I move my text it doesn't come out as planned

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/7/2008 9:03:32)

Have you made a new layer after you had used the blend tool?

Mo -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/7/2008 15:55:21)

No, I haven't. What I have been saying so far is what happened before I read this tut, just to help you a bit, I've never actually done it though

Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/7/2008 16:08:30)

Mo, :D. What you say is correct, but this is for an effect that
  • makes the text having a few colors, instead of one/using grain extract/merge etc.
  • let's the text get a border on one side. If you work with lightning, this could work out really well :D

  • Mo -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/7/2008 16:13:33)

    Now that I know the results I will definately use this tut more often, I was wondering how I was supposed to do Text when I want different shades

    Cool Dragonz -> RE: [GIMP] Less used/Not used Helpful hints/tips (3/7/2008 16:15:04)

    I am happy I could help you, Mo :D
