ok to star opn a image (a sprite)
metagross in this case

now duplicate the layer and get rid of the first layer

next get rid of the wight with the magic wand select tool

now here comes the recoloring just select the color area you need with the color select tool

after this change the color with these two tools

With this you shoud use the second tool but if it dosent work becuse the item is to light color it with the first tool.
once this is one repeat with diferant areas till you get the disired color balence.
after you save it you should end up with somthing like this

this may be a bad example but it works better on differant things if you work at it for a bit you can end up with better things like these
