Elian continued the spin, his sword battered aside by his opponent's two handed swing, and his shield breezing by to no effect. Squaring himself again to face his opponent, the Defender suddenly stumbled at a shocking, dislocating sense of loss. The Champion of Ice exhaled, and Eli's armor rimmed over with a hoary frost that spread across his neck and chest. The freezing wind caused him to stumble backwards, gasping as the chill exhalation stabbed the breath from his lungs.

There was a moment of infinite stillness from one moment to the next, and then Eli's focus returned. He was down on one knee, shield and sword holding himself up unsteadily as the Ice Champion loomed over him. The Defender's voice was weak as he addressed the ice creature. "It, would appear, that I am nothing to you Cryoface." He paused, panting slightly, feeling drained as though he had just broken a ritual circle. Eli pushed himself to his feet unsteadily, using his sword much like a cane. "I, have been found wanting. I wish the best of luck to you Champion of Ice, as for me, I withdraw, I will not dishonor the wishes of the Wind Lord." Moving slowly, the young Defender made his way from the center of the Arena back towards the gate from which he had entered. Vanishing into the gate behind the Wind Pillar, the gate closing behind him, Elian vanished from the Arena in a burst of wind.

Roman grinned inwardly, mouth opening and tongue lolling out in the manner of an ecstatic dog. The lizard thought he was a mere beast! So much the better, if that would give him any kind of advantage. He slowed his bounding pace as the mage extended its staff towards him, preparing to stop or, more likely, dodge in the event of a magical blast. A blast, however, was not what came. Rather, a mass of water emerged from inside the staff, a long stream of the substance. It lacked full coherence, but neither did it fall completely apart, and it was moving towards him, albeit slowly. It seemed the mage did not have full control over his own element.

Given the water's speed, it could not be mere impact that would pose a danger. Rather, it seemed more likely that there was something about the water that made it dangerous in and of itself. Perhaps poison?. It would be wise, in any case, to not let it touch him. So his next leap was slightly to the right, and the next more so than before, a change in course made difficult, but not impossible, by the looseness of the sand underfoot. He would have to watch himself, and plan carefully. This was not the solid earth of his beloved plains, and even four legs can falter on unstable ground.

Flame slipped from his nostrils as the lizard shouted out his challenge and his entirely baffling claim to be Salt. "Salt?" he asked, his tone incredulous. "How does one connect salt to water? Salt is mined from the earth or found in rocks, never is it found in water! By the Lords, how could water give the life it does when so contaminated?"
Of course, in the spirit of the competition, he combined the question with an attack. Between his open jaws, flame gathered itself into a ball of fire, rather larger than the spheres he had used in the Arena of sky, and promising something more explosive in nature, by the way it pulsed. With a toss of his head, he sent it arcing for the lizard mage.

Before Zenz had the opportunity to shoot the rock he had ripped from the ground at Galvian there was an alarming flash of light within the sand cloud. The middle of the cloud was heated to an extreme temperature in an instant, leaving a pillar of glass surrounded by charred sand. What was left of the sand in the air still obscured Zenz’s view of the Chiat and the Earth Champion was certain his opponent would attempt an attack from while hidden from view.

A point of light within the cloud gave Zenz ample warning of Galvian’s first bolt. Despite the fact that the bolt was almost certainly going to pass Zenz safely by to the left, he took a couple of steps to the right as a precaution. Unfortunately, this precaution was a mistake on the part of the swordsman. The second bolt would have missed him by a wide margin if he had remained stationary, but Zenz’s unnecessary movment put him right in its path.

He had turned towards the second magic projectile just as it connected with his left arm. Although it did little actual harm, except for inflicting a horrible numbing pain in the stricken arm, the sheer surprise of attack was enough to knock Zenz to the ground. Another explicit curse left the Earth Champion’s lips.

Zenz hadn’t expected the second bolt, but the third energy attack was even more surprising. For the space of a heartbeat Zenz panicked. He saw the conjured electricity coming towards him, this attempt obviously aimed, and wasn’t certain he could dodge in time. In desperation he simply threw the fist size rock he had intended to use against Galvian to intercept the deadly energy attack. Alive and relatively, he sighed in relief.

Getting to his feet as quickly as possible, Zenz drew his long sword. “I’m done with these petty opening moves. Get ready, beast!” He charged forward as he called out the warning. The sand cloud, partly because it was no longer under Zenz’s influence and partly due to Galvian’s interference, was all but gone by the time the swordsman drew level with the glass pillar.

He had considered shattering the out of place pillar, but the fact that he was barefoot dissuaded him greatly; he did not want to be looking out for shards of glass as well as other dangers. The moment he was almost within striking range he prepared a lunge directed at the Chiat’s stomach.

Blaze’s boots crunched against the red arena sand as he approached the center of the arena. As he walked, his eyes meandered, looking for the darkness champion. Where had that coward gone? As he searched for the shadowy man, his eyes caught sight of a slight stirring beneath his feet. Something dark, barely visible against the arena floor, was moving across the crimson sand. Blaze did not give it much notice at first; but when he realized it was following him, he began to worry. Not only did it follow him, it was also turning, as if it was trying to get in front of him. It was like someone was manipulating his shadow… Then it hit him.

Just as Blaze understood what the object moving across the floor was, It began to transform. It began to rise, twisting and turning even as it did so. When it was done, a being made of shadow, his shadow, stood directly in front of him. It looked like a man, with no weapons, and completely black, but it was a man nonetheless. The shadow man lifted a fist to punch at Blaze’s face, but he had already moved. His platinum hair fluttered softly as he ducked out of harm’s way. Stepping to the side with his left leg, Blaze pivoted his entire body. He landed with his left leg set in front of him, foot pointing forward, and his right leg placed behind and slightly to the side.

Laze felt something fly passed his his legs, and quickly glanced down to see something dark miss him by just a hair. He recognized its owner to be the darkness champion, and the object to be the dishonorable man’s shadowy blade. Immediately, his katana flashed forward. Light glistened off its edge as it soared through the air, blade parallel to the ground, heading for darkness’ midriff.

The fight had truly begun.

Krey -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/8/2009 22:33:49)

Well, that was no good. His foe had managed to dodge—and by no more than a hair, at that! Worse, he'd miscalculated. Sand was not nearly so forgiving of certain maneuvers as dirt or gravel, including but certainly not limited to sliding. Not only did he miss his target, but as the tip of the blackened blade sailed just short of his foe, he found the rather sudden stop causing him to overbalance. With the momentum of his right arm to carry him, his body spun so that he crashed onto his back, just in time to watch a katana whistle by in front of his face.

He blinked, cursing under his breath. That had been far too close for comfort, and he didn't have long to react before his foe would take advantage of his position on the ground. In order to buy himself some time, he made use of the false shadow, which, being tied to the Light Champion's own shadow, followed him with just a bit of a lag. As Blaze shifted left, the shadow followed, though as he turned to the right it neglected to do so, leaving itself instead to his left side. Now, with the katana's blade out of the way and its creator actively manipulating it again, it moved in front of him and fell low, its right leg sweeping inwards at the Light Champion's knees.

As the feint shadow struck, Grey rolled to his left, away from the sword-and-shield warrior. One full roll away, he propped himself up with his left hand, then used his legs to push himself up the rest of the way.

”Do you ever think a maneuver through before acting upon it, Jonathan?” Asked the demon within him, and he just smirked. Shade knew the answer well enough, now that their minds were so closely joined. Noting that Jon was more amused than annoyed, the demon couldn't help but grin to himself, keeping his thoughts to himself with some effort. Things were going far better than he could have hoped.

Rather than take precious time with a proper response to his inner demon, the corrupted warrior took swift action. Once more on his feet, he allowed the feint shadow to dissipate into what looked like a fading mist, just as it recovered from its kick. Eyes locked upon his foe, a wicked grin crossed his features as he began to walk backwards. His own shadow, once more, stirred to life, and in an instant engulfed him. It enlarged, sapping the essence of Blaze's own ever-present shadow in a narrow, creeping stream. Steadily, the mass grew, becoming what looked like a large dome of shadows. In the center of the immaterial blackened dome, hidden from view, stood the Champion of Darkness.

“Keep clear of the shadows, Light Champion, or face the nightmares within.” A clear warning from within the dome, as its edges began to flicker.

qbsuperstar03 -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/9/2009 11:15:42)

Cryoface allows himself a slight smirk as the valiant Defender forfeits from the field of battle. Perhaps his Lord has abandoned him just when he needs the support most? It matters not. Now a shadowy dome is beginning to grow near the middle of the perfect octagon that is the chess board of choice for the Lords. Like last year, Cryoface has no desire to find out what would happen should he venture inside the cancer-like blemish on the otherwise pristine sand of the Finals arena. Unlike last year, Cryoface thinks he has the tools to deal with it, but it will take him some time to gather up the energy necessary for an Iceball. Until then, he has to make do with some other form of engagement.

Being as reluctant as he is to sling spells nonstop until he runs out of mana, the Snow Warrior decides to switch back to the Frostbow to engage in long-distance combat with the Champion of Darkness. It is more important to do something as often as possible rather than wait for the right moment. Passiveness leads to death on this stage.

Gambling on the chance that the Darkness Champion won't be able to see the arrow coming until it's too late, focused as he seems to be on the Light Champion, Cryoface fires at what he guesses is the center of the shadowy dome. By all means, this is a difficult shot, but by the same token, a gratifying one if it manages to find its mark.

Clyde -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/10/2009 3:14:19)

Well, well, well. The Earth Champion finally decided to get ready for some real action.

"I’m done with these petty opening moves. Get ready, beast!" Zenz charged at Galvian with a long sword. It was a bold action, but the Earth Champion was being foolish. Charging at an electrical opponent with metal in his hands was stupid mistake and there was no way he would let him escape without that very lesson. He ignored the fact he had called him a beast.

Electricity charged to his left hand before an idea came to him. He aimed his electricity at his lightning rod of a sword with minimal effort and power. The point wasn't to damage him, but to get his attention. Energy versus Earth. A battle that would probably last forever. Together however; they would be a force to be reckoned with.

"Listen, Zenz was it?" He lowered his voice trying to keep it between him and the person he was speaking to. "While this is a free for all battle...we should work together. There may be stronger opponents then you or I and after our battle someone may swoop in to finish the victor's life. We don't want such a thing happening now do we?"

His ideologies conflicted, he had to sallow his pride if he wanted to win this. While he spoke the previous words his soul ached and his conscious screamed. The main goal was to survive this thing and at the rate their battle was going both would be tired and weak. Their lives in the hands of their other opponents.

"I'm sure you have some desire to finish off your Arena's Champions?" It was like fishing for a shark and Galvian didn't know what bait would catch this fish. "I do; the Fire Champion. He's a dangerous opponent, one that can't be taken down easily. Maybe we can help each other make it to the end? Then we may finish our battle?"

Galvian rarely spoke to anybody let alone an opponent, he had only used his words to convince town's children to bring him food. Telling them that he was an angry God of their people, sent to find reasons why he should spare their lives. He had lied then, he wasn't proud of it. Survival; it always did crazy things to living beings.

His voice and tone were clear cut. His eyes staring into the Earth Champion's. He meant every word even if each syllable had stabbed his unrelenting soul.

"What do you say, Zenz?"

Geddesmck -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/11/2009 8:29:31)

Yet another energy attack threatened Zenz, but he could not dodge this time, due to the ever decreasing gap between himself and the Chiat. Rather than attempt a hopeless dodge, Zenz let the electricity collide with his blade. He was shocked, in more than one way, as the electricity refused to be blocked by the steel and inflicted a familiar numbing pain on the Earth Champion’s right arm. With a gasp, more out of surprise than pain, he dropped his long sword into the sand. He was about to draw his short sword when he had cause for pause.

The beast began to speak. Even more unexpected was what it was actually saying; it was proposing an alliance! Zenz’s first reaction was to draw his short sword while the beast spoke and slay it before it could even complete its proposition. However, the barefoot swordsman found himself unable to do so. The beast was speaking and, even more importantly, reasoning. Indeed, calling it a beast was a mistake and treating it as one even more so.

Threads of Zenz’s magic began to sink into the ground, worming their way slowly towards the Energy Champion as he spoke. The Chiat was talking about the Fire Champion; suggesting a double team against him and Zenz’s magic threads were still some distance from their target. Knowing now that his steel provided no resistance for energy, Zenz took his left hand away from his short sword, attempting to make himself look as unthreatening as possible.

“What do you say, Zenz?”

The Earth Champion let a scowl cross his face momentarily; his magic threads were still not in place, but it passed in an instant. “It seems that calling you a beast was an insult, you have proved t' be intelligent and, more impressive, t’ have some wisdom.” He needed just a few more seconds.

“Yet, you make a mistake, thinking that we can have an alliance. I have limited trust, and I am unwilling t’ share any of it with someone who has attempted t’ kill me.” More time, he needed more time. “I do however, give you some advice, as an apology for my insult to you.” Almost there, any second now, if Galvian refrained from attacking for just a few more seconds. “In this championship, it is not the one with the largest muscles, or the most power, or even the most wisdom who is victorious, it is the one with the most faith. If you do not have the faith that you can defeat myself and the other champions, well then, you don’t deserve to win.”

The threads were in place. If the Chiat had stood still through Zenz’s speech, he was now vulnerable to a particularly dangerous attack from the Earth Champion. The sand around him would begin to feel strangely loose, before rapidly disappearing into seeming nothingness and taking anyone stood on it with them, down to a terrify death in a grave of crimson sand. Even if the Chiat noticed the attack in time to move, it would be difficult to escape the shifting sands, possibly leaving the Energy Champion open to a follow up attack.

Zenz unleashed the attack.

Guardian of Nekops -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/11/2009 9:33:21)

Tel’rion swept his staff across the field of battle as the fiery wolf changed course, the suspended stream of deadly brine following it in unsteady pursuit. The speed at which he could move the water and hold it together by controlling its salt was much slower than that at which his opponent could flee from it, but such hardly mattered… the Salt Mage could harry the beast across the arena sands indefinitely using this single attack, and as long as the creature kept moving it would be unable to prepare, unable to assess, unable to attack. Unless, of course, the creature tried to charge him directly… in which case it would catch a mouthful of Dragonsalt at close range.

The voice spoke once again in the Drakel’s ear and he shook his head, trying to clear the unsettling sensation from it. This time, he was certain that the disembodied diatribe came from the wolf… both the response to his own jab and the lack of any other interested parties making it abundantly clear. It was certainly odd that the creature was able to manifest a growing orb of fire within its mouth as it spoke, but who knew what powers an intelligent, magic-wielding hellhound might possess?

The Fire Champion’s level of knowledge, however, was easily discernable from its words, and the outcast scholar scoffed at it as the wolf’s fireball swelled towards completion. “Gifted with power over speech and flame, and yet you know nothing of the sea?”

The creature flung its burning sphere towards Tel’rion with a savage motion of its head, and his clawed hand snapped up in response to clutch at the stream of water, halting it and forming it into a steady, stationary globe. Thus released from its need to focus on the attack, his staff rose up in a defensive gesture between himself and the oncoming ball of flame. The last of the salt water it contained sprayed forth from the metal head and condensed to form a solid disk; a small, thick buckler of fluid that would protect him from the fire wolf’s attack. Clenching his fists until the knuckles turned black, he locked both sphere and shield into place and braced for the fiery impact.

The fireball slammed into the Salt Mage’s barrier and sizzled impotently against it for a few seconds, its flames doing little more than illuminate the Drakel’s mocking grin as it died. The volatile heart of the spell, however, was unaffected, and before long it had suffered enough.

Tel’rion’s watery buckler exploded in a blast of flame and fury, the majority of its mass evaporating in the flash and the rest being scattered into droplets and individual grains of salt by the shockwave. The force of the blow echoed back into the magichemist as well, knocking him backwards towards his Pillar and down onto his tail even as the flames licked his scaly snout. The sphere of water fell to the crimson sands, the concentration that suspended it broken, and by the scholar’s side the mechanics of the staff shrieked, shuddering, to a halt.

Cursing fiercely, Tel’rion lifted the metal head up before his eyes, looking frantically into the maw to see what was amiss. A cursory glance revealed the cause to be hopeless; the fine Drakel machinery had been blasted full of salt, both individual grains and larger crystallized pieces. True, the machine was waterproof, so soaking it long enough in fresh water might fix it, but the salt was far too deeply ingrained for simply drawing it out to work… such would likely cause more damage than it repaired.

Not enough time for this, the Salt Mage cursed mentally, his eyes darting across the field of battle and seeking out the hellhound.

ringulreith -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/11/2009 10:52:06)

The darkness champion appeared to have miscalculated his motions, and at the end of his slide, fell over on his back. How foolish… The accident did save the man from Blaze’s katana, which continued to fly to the right, well passed the shadow mage, and into the crimson sand. Blaze had no time to fret, for as soon as the man fell, the shadow being, which he had ignored, appeared right in front of him, kicking out at Blaze. As a black leg came up, a black shield came down, its edge slicing through the shadow. His sword followed after, coming in from the side even as the shadow began to dissipate.

The shadow done with, Blaze looked back at his opponent, only to be presented with some sort of dome made of darkness. From within the dome came a voice, mocking him, daring him to enter. Blaze gritted his teeth. Did this… This coward just insult him! Blaze had no time to become angry at the man, however, for even as he stood there, the dome grew bigger, posing a possible threat. Whatever the consequences, Blaze had to go into the shadows to face his opponent. Holding his katana horizontally, Blaze prepared to dash into the darkness. Then, with a flurry of motion, Blaze pushed himself forward, towards the shadows and his possible demise. As he entered the darkness, the entire world went black. He could not see anything. He was used to fighting in bad conditions, but this… This was unnerving. He could not see at all. Like his vision had been taken away from him. No matter, he would have to rely on his other senses to survive. This was the elemental championships, after all. Did he really expect it to be easy?

“My name is Blaze Drakestorm! Remember that name, dishonorable vagabond, for it shall be the last you will ever here! Prepare yourself!”

Krey -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/11/2009 11:52:54)

His challenge made, Grey stepped back from the center of the dome, leaving some room to deal with the Light Champion should he enter. Moments later, an arrow whizzed through the center, just a few feet from him—right where he'd been standing at first. He managed a bit of a grin and a nervous laugh, quiet enough that only he could hear. “Well... Something to keep in mind for later. Never create an ominous dome and stand right in the center.”

”Must you learn everything the hard way, Jonathan?”

“Apparently only the important stuff,” he whispered with a smirk, and then perked a brow as he realized that the shadow figure attached to Blaze had been attacked. Despite being unseen, a wicked grin crossed the corrupt warrior's features.

Indeed, the shadow had dissipated under the assault of the Light Champion. But it wasn't finished. Leaving him to think that it was gone, it drew itself back into his shadow, and then rose up behind him, still attached to his own shadow at the feet. And then, as Grey was starting to think he couldn't be any more foolish, he pushed into the shadows. He wasn't really sure how to react. He was dumbfounded, but that lasted only for a moment as he realized the advantageous position he'd just been thrust into.

While Blaze was blind, there was nothing that happened within the dome that Grey was not aware of. Every shape within the shadows spoke to him. Every motion called out to him. It was better than sight. Nothing could surprise him now. It was likely the same could not be said for his foe, behind whom the shadow figure had followed. It vanished into the shadowy dome, and then shifted, becoming a solid, darkened blade as its form compressed into itself. It floated behind the Light Champion, waiting to strike

It never got the chance. As Grey was preparing to attack, another idea entirely hit him, which threw his entire plan out the window. A grin, and he took two hops backwards, out of the dome of shadows and once more into the light. It stung at his eyes, moving from total blackness into the bright daylight, but that didn't slow his concentration in the least. He placed his focus upon the dome, and as he did the outside edges of it solidified, locking in what air was inside. That, however, was just the beginning. Once the outer edge was solid, it began to press inward, drinking in the shadows inside and compressing into a denser wall.

Swiftly the dome closed in, shrinking, the outer edge becoming harder and harder, thicker and thicker. Before long, the dome would shrink to the size of a little ball, utterly crushing everything inside. As for shadowed the blade inside? Forgotten, it fell to the sands, retaining its solid form despite no longer being fed power.

TormentedDragon -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/11/2009 14:03:07)

The sea? In legend, it was an expanse of water so great you could not see the land on the other side... if indeed there was land on the other side. That had never been made clear in the stories. But what did that have to do with salt? The lizard's tone intimated that it was closely tied... perhaps, then, the sea was indeed tainted. He had never quite believed that of the stories, for tainted water was always the small and the stagnant, and never a lake.

But there was little time for such speculation, nor was it particularly important. The mage's shield of water saved him from death, but not from harm. There was little, he had found, that could block such a blast, and that held true here as well. His eyes gleamed as he caught the shrieking of the staff, and saw the mage look at it with what was probably a worried expression. Here was an opportunity!

He had not paused in his running, but when the fireball struck, he had veered in towards the Pillar of Water, now heading almost straight for his opponent. Flames sprang to life on his teeth, their heads trailing in towards his throat as he inhaled, chest expanding in preparation. "If the sea is salt-tainted," he whispered, this controversy refusing to be ignored, "and the rivers that feed it are pure..." He was in range. Four feet struck sand, and dug in, his dash coming to sliding halt some feet away from his target. "...then where does the taint occur?"

A veritable torrent of flame barreled from his mouth, borne on the wings of his breath and his magic. Sand, salt, and scales... all of it would burn.

Clyde -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/11/2009 20:38:04)

The Earth Champion halted, stopping in his tracks before dropping his long sword. His right arm must have taken the extent of the electrical damage. Galvian grinned knowing how easily he could have killed him right then and there. One shot to the head would most likely end his life, but he would have to wait to hear his response. Energy danced between his paws, as far as he was concerned he could trust Zenz as far as he could throw him.

“It seems that calling you a beast was an insult, you have proved t' be intelligent and, more impressive, t’ have some wisdom.” His teeth clenched. What gave him the right to call another living being an "Animal" or a "Beast"? He was being to lose his patience, but if they were to team up he would have to wait to kill him.

“Yet, you make a mistake, thinking that we can have an alliance. I have limited trust, and I am unwilling t’ share any of it with someone who has attempted t’ kill me.” There were the words he was waiting for, his key to back off from his opponent. Galvian quickly jumped back trying to gain some more distance between them. Wait, at least give him his final words.

“I do however, give you some advice, as an apology for my insult to you.” Maybe it was a mistake...

“In this championship, it is not the one with the largest muscles, or the most power, or even the most wisdom who is victorious, it is the one with the most faith. If you do not have the faith that you can defeat myself and the other champions, well then, you don’t deserve to win.” Galvian laughed to himself, the arrogance of the Earth Champion was obvious. His ignorance of the true world would most likely be his down fall. Such high and mighty words meant nothing in battle.

"Nice little lecture, but it's your actions that bring meaning to your words." He then noticed the ground in between them sink. His feet were slowly beginning to follow with until he sprung back and to his left. It was certainly clever, but it wasn't enough to beat him. If that attack was only a few feet larger then Galvian would have been in trouble.

It was time to return the favor, the bare foot Earth Champion was in for a treat. He wouldn't kill him so soon, he wanted to have a bit more fun. That sand he was using for battle would now be used torture to him. The idea itself brought a grin to Galvian's face as he jumped into the air. There he would get a good advantage point and perspective for his attack. He flicked his wrists back and forth each motion shooting quick bolts of electricity at the ground around Zenz. Watching the sand around him turn to glass his last bolt was aimed at his feet. If he was lucky it would have encased his feet in glass or maybe even place his bare feet under hot glass. Either would do.

The main purpose was to limit his sand access and try to get a rough idea of how good his control is. Galvian landed safely on the sand before looking towards his opponent. Between them now was a red solid battlefield.

Geddesmck -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/12/2009 10:51:12)

The curse that Zenz used when Galvian escaped his attack, seemingly out of dumb luck, would have made even his dwarf companions blush. He severed the magic link between himself and the small sinkhole that now lay between himself and the Chiat. A counter attack was imminent and the Earth Champion prepared to move hastily.

Galvian jumped into the air, signalling to Zenz that he should retreat immediately. He was about to dive to the right, but his path was blocked by a bolt of energy, which, although not harming the Earth Champion, scorched the sand before him and even fused some of it into shards of crude glass. Before he could even contemplate moving left (which would have put him very close to the glass pillar), a second bolt also blocked this path. More and more white hot energy rained down on the sand around Zenz, leaving wicked shards of glass around his feet and blocking any of his safe routes of escape. The Energy Champion had not yet landed on the sand and he seemed ready to launch a final attack, this one undoubtedly targeted towards the barefoot swordsman himself.

Glass blocked the Earth Champions escape on all sides, except directly in front, but in that case, his own deadly sinkhole threatened him. He almost despaired at that moment, seeing no immediate escape and knowing that another attack from the Energy Champion as assured.

At that point, inspiration hit Zenz, prompting a smirk and a laugh.

The Earth Champion dived into the sinkhole.

Cryoface takes the miss with a grain of salt. After all, the distance alone was making it a rather difficult shot, and thus he is proud to have managed to strike as precisely as he did. Now if only the Darkness Champion wasn't seemingly prescient...still, there is combat going on all around. Zenz and Galvian are duking it out, as are Roman and the Drakel. Seeing as how the Light Champion is most likely trapped somehow in the contracting dome of shadows, it's up to Cryoface now to take care of the representative of the Darkness Lord.

He doesn't seem that quick to Cryoface's practiced eye for measuring up a warrior, but if he can fire off more than one of those domes, this battle is over. Guessing that a hit would cause a disruption of concentration and break the spell already active on the field, or at least prevent him from producing another one, Cryoface fires another shot from his Frostbow, hoping to strike at the heart and finish the fight before it gets more involved. After all, there are still too many players on the field to think about anything more than skirmishes. An arrow directed to the upper torso would most likely force the target to react defensively, giving the Snow Warrior time to plot his next move.

After the shot, Cryoface begins withdrawing, seeking cover behind the Pillar of Ice. The next planned attack would take some time to prepare, and he hopes that splitting the Darkness Champion's attention between maintaining the shadow dome and engaging him will force an error in judgment that could translate into the time needed to get off the spell.

Krey -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/12/2009 22:41:58)

While the dome of shadows made seeing what was happening inside impossible, the sounds within were clear. The dome drank in the shadowy blade, but the man inside was another story entirely. The sickening crunch of bones was unmistakeable, the gut-wrenching sound of sword scraping against armor, the whine of a kite shield folding in on itself under the immense pressure that the dome was creating. These sounds drowned out whatever cries might have come from the dome, while Grey stood silent, watching his creation as it literally squeezed the life out of the Light Champion.

Of course, having already been attacked once by Cryoface, he wasn't totally ignoring the Ice Champion. Rather, he maintained a faint monitoring of his shadow and anything that moved near it. Enough that he'd be able to tell if he fired off another arrow, at the very least. At his range, there was only so much he could do—and his bow was already prepared.

The dome was just beginning to round off at the bottom, starting to take the shape of a sphere as the arrow was fired. Expectant as he was of an assault, most of his focus remained on the dome, which slowed Grey's reaction just enough that he failed to avoid injury. His right arm snapped up, the blade swinging to deflect the arrow as he leaned his body away.. The arrow whizzed by the blade, its head grazing his chest. Its edge sliced at the flesh, scraping against one of his ribs and drawing a gasp of pain from his lips, followed by a growl of anger.

By the time Grey had been struck, the dome had become a little ball, about an inch in diameter. It sat in a pool of blood, squeezed from the Light Champion as he'd been crushed within the dome. Aside from the blood, there were no visible remains. Bones, armor, weapon—all had been drowned in shadow. Eyes alight with fury, Grey reached out, the shadows reacting to the power of the demon within him. The ball rose into the air, drifting to his hand, and he turned.

The Light Champion had been the first to feel the shadows' embrace. Now it was the ice creature's turn. The ball of shadows hidden in his hand, he began to walk towards the Ice Champion, conscious of his footing and focusing carefully on Cryoface's shadow now as the wound stung at his chest.

”You should have let me worry about the dome, Jonathan.”

Grey's eyes narrowed, and he nearly growled through gritted teeth as he walked, “It wouldn't have been as satisfying. Just as a wound will make this ice beast's death that much sweeter.”

The demon snickered to himself as Grey moved. Further and further the corrupt warrior fell, and there would be no going back now. Once the tournament was finished, the fun could truly begin.

The stomach-churning crunch of a flesh-form's body being crushed under the pressures of the dome would probably make even the most hardened humanoid fighter at least flinch from fear. But there is no room for that, nor is there any for doubt in Cryoface's own skill and in the Lord that spawned him.

While Grey is busy squeezing the life out of the Light Champion, Cryoface is preparing his most powerful spell, one that, while it doesn't do much damage in and of itself, would change the battlefield in its own special way. How it works is simple: First, a highly accurate strike chills the target area to subzero temperatures, then magically conjured pure water comes splashing down from about a foot above onto the refrigerated location, freezing almost instantly. The end result on a hard surface is generally an icy disk around 20 feet in radius (for even with the aid of magic, few things can be considered perfect) where Cryoface has a significant advantage in maneuverability due to a combination of experience and anatomy, but it has yet to be tested on a porous surface such as sand.

As the energy builds, Cryoface keeps reminding himself to do the spell the way he practiced it in the long year since his defeat on these same sands to the Fire Champion, lest he mess up somewhere and lose all the time and magic being invested. Cryoface generally would like somewhere to hide as he prepared this spell, but arenas such as this are usually designed to afford both spectators and fighters alike with as few obstructed lines of sight as possible, forcing the Snow Warrior to wonder as the spell nears completion if it's really up to him now to stop Grey from running amok and killing everyone the same way he did the Light Champion.

Grey's hand came up slowly, clasping over the wound in his chest as he walked towards the Ice Champion, his lips twisting into a snarl. It ached more than it bled, a constant reminder of his spite towards the Ice Champion. And the Light Champion had called him a coward! … Not that he could disagree with the icy creature's methods. It simply angered angered him just that he'd been caught off guard while finishing off the Light Lord's chosen one.

Strange that the creature was so still. He didn't make any move towards Grey, hostile or otherwise, now that he'd left his mark. The corrupt warrior didn't like it. “He's up to something.”

”You don't say?” Snickered the demon, ”Shame I can't tell what. Would make things much simpler, hm?”

“Simple solution? Be ready for anything,” answered the Darkness Champion. Stopping not too far from the ice pillar, he channeled Shade's power through his body and focused it upon his own shadow, which once again stirred to life. A trio of blackened tendrils whipped up, spiraling around his form and lashing restlessly. Feeding it further with his shadow, he formed them into corporeality, so that they could serve both as defense and offense. He closed his left hand, sealing the ball of shadows within, and launched his attack.

Of the three tendrils, two were behind and to either side, with the third in front of him. That third one whipped forth, forming a deadly point at its tip as it rushed towards the Ice Champion. It lashed back and forth, its path erratic as it flew at about the speed of an arrow, then straightened out as it neared and lunged at his chest.

Damn. He was able to avoid the attack by diving forward into his own sinkhole. In Galvian's eyes the Earth Champion was basically running away until he could catch him off guard. There was no way a prey would put itself in a corner unless it had a plan to escape or fight back. Galvian remembered what Zenz could do with the sand when he unleashed that wave and he wasn't ready to see what else he was capable of. Like the energy that flowed throughout his body he had to be quick and spontaneous if he wanted to win this fight.

He had a few ideas, but he didn't have the time to considered them all thoroughly. With this in mind he turned to the glass pillar he had made earlier. His body lunged towards the pillar, he was almost directly above the pillar. There he hurled his fist at the peak making the glass begin to crack. When Galvian had landed behind the pillar he brought his leg against the side of it creating more cracks. He continued hitting the base until he was sure it would be ready to tip over.

Taking a few steps back he hopped up again, this time against the topside of the pillar. He would try to bring down the pillar and fill the surrounding area with glass shards deep into the sand. Using the momentum of the falling pillar he leaped over the sinkhole and onto the glass platform he made earlier in attempt to stop the Earth Champion.

There were many things Galvian had hoped would come from this feat. One being that the glass shards would spray most of the area and provide a sort of spike trap. Meaning if the Earth Champion were to resurface or even tried walking this deadly battlefield he would find himself with a few cuts and splinters in his feet. The platform he stood on now would hopefully still prevent any of his sand moves from reaching or even be thick enough for him not to break through. Still Galvian readied himself for the worst, not sure if any of it would work.

"This crimson battlefield will be your grave Earth Champion," he said as he rubbed his paws against each other. The friction, the kinetic energy, and the power in his hands. This changed into the electricity his opponents knew and loved. "You won't be grounded for long."

The Champion of Salt looked up to see the hellhound barreling down upon him, fire filling the gaping maw and rushing inward, driven by the speed of its headlong charge. That infernal voice whispered in his head once more and Tel’rion shook it violently, needing his concentration now more than ever.

Protection! his mind screamed, grasping at straws. Unable to sense where his remaining water from the buckler had been scattered or the depths to which his sphere of brine had sunk, the Salt Mage instead reached out with his free hand and called to every grain of salt his mind could claim mastery over, pulling it in as indiscriminately as a lodestone might draw iron filings. A thin barrier of water and loose salt sprang into existence between him and the oncoming creature, and he was forced to hold his staff back from joining the mix. His belt pulled rebelliously against his waist as well, propelled by the tug of his bottles and dagger, and the salt imbedded in the machinery of the staff was ripped free as well, causing irreparable damage to the gears and inner workings.

The bestial Champion of Fire slid to a halt upon the crimson sand, just a handful of feet from where Tel’rion lay, helpless. Fire roared forth from the wolf’s open maw, pausing only for a moment as it ripped through the flimsy film of water the mage had erected. The grains and crystals of Dragonsalt burned purest white as they stole the fire’s heat… but nowhere near enough of it. Tel’rion’s face and palm blistered and blackened beneath the onslaught, shedding scales as he clawed frantically at the leather of his belt, desperate to free it from his body before it was too late.

Just as the Drakel lost hope his own watery attack returned, interposing itself into the breach and granting him a shield from fiery death. Claws tore through the charred leather, scoring deep scratches that ripped scales from his belly as he grasped the sundered garment, hurling it viciously at his foe.

Tel’rion’s belt crashed through the barrier of water and into the consuming fire, turning to ash as it hits the zone of crimson death. The glass vials of acid and base were no match for the incredible heat and shattered, exploding as their contents boiled. Reaching out a scorched hand, the magichemist slammed acid and base together and let them neutralize, forming a second barrier of salt water.

“Taint?!” he screamed, his voice racked with agony and rage. “Water IS Salt, you fool!”

The Drakel slammed his palm forward with deadly force, giving an order to the other thing that had been freed by the fire’s unchecked consumption; his dagger of Dragonsalt. Driven by the raw power of the Salt Champion’s twisted mind, the crystal knife lanced forward through the water, flying forth through his opponent’s flame and burning with its own blindingly white light towards the hellhound’s open mouth.

As the tendril of shadow speeds towards him, Cryoface instinctively reacts by firing the Iceball. However, such a reaction comes at a horrible price: The attack from Grey finds its mark, piercing the Snow Warrior where the chest on a flesh-form would be.

As for the Iceball, its magic causes it to take a curved path, almost ballistic, as if it were weighted down by the force of its own magic. Cryoface's last-ditch effort to stop the Darkness Champion's run to the title explodes at Grey's feet, chilling the area in a 20-foot radius from the point of impact. Finally, water comes splashing down about a foot above the affected area, hopefully anchoring Grey's feet in the ice (though he could easily bust his way out with the other two tendrils of his latest endeavor).

Still, Cryoface went into the tournament with full knowledge of the worst that could happen to him, and the worst has indeed happened. With this knowledge, the proud Snow Warrior and Champion of Ice has no problem accepting his ultimate fate, however prematurely it may have arrived from his point of view. But there was nothing in the rules that said he couldn't have one last parting shot.

"All...all I wanted was to win a homeland for my people, just as you flesh-forms carved Battleon from the wilderness. But I see that you have managed to doom them to an eternity of wandering and being hunted by flesh-form adventurers," Cryoface says weakly while glaring at his killer, eyes full of defiance. "We...we are a noble people, spawned directly from the Ice Lord's power. All you flesh-forms see in my kind are monsters that stand in the way of your ultimate goals."

Cryoface knew he didn't have much time left. With all the power left in his lungs, he shouts, as if desperately trying to get through the roar of the crowd, "May the Darkness Lord you serve betray you like he does all of those that claim to have mastered his power!"

And with those final words, the once-proud Champion turns inanimate, and his Frostbow falls to the sands.

The rush of flame could not be held back by so weak a protection. The shield he had formed to guard against the fireball might have sufficed, but hardly this. As each grain of salt flared to life within the flame, he felt them, shaped by heat and fire in his mind's eye. So too did he feel the shape of the lizard's flesh, each scale outlined, the claws scratching at the belt. He lifted a paw, feeling the flame begin to wane, even as another shield of salt and water rushed to his opponent's defense.

Glass and leather charred and shattered, and the contents formed into another barrier. His paw came down, a step back, the last of his flame no match for the two-fold defense. The lizard screamed, nonsense regarding the nature of water, and something new shot forward, a dagger. His mouth snapped shut, and he crouched, yet not swiftly enough. The flaming weapon struck on his snout, sliding across and up the ridge of his skull, parting skin and fur leaving charred remains behind. The flash of pain was intense, as tortured nerves screamed out their warning, and he whimpered in response, powerful legs shoving his massive body to the side.

He hit the sand, and rolled, coming up on flaming paws and setting off at another run, shaking his head. The wound felt different than it should, and it took little time to understand why. That dagger had been fashioned of salt, not metal. It had burned as such, and the stinging of the wound was that felt by salt ground into bleeding flesh. Growling, he lashed out in anger on the second bound of his flight, gripping the flames that fed on the lizard's dagger and imposing his will upon them. Instantly, the dagger erupted in fire hot enough to melt steel.

And still he ran, skirting the edge of the water pillar.

Zenz had lost much of his power two years ago and this had meant he could no longer use some of his most effective techniques. However, there was one technique, perhaps his most useful, that he retained access to. He didn’t really have a name for it, although he’d heard the dwarves refer to it as burrowing.

Even before his whole body had been swallowed by the sinkhole, the Earth Champion had prepared to use this ‘burrowing’ ability through the sand. With time he might have been able to aim his burrowing to burst out in front of Galvian, a technique that had failed in Fountain Arena, but could be useful against the Energy Champion. Zenz had no time though, and instead, he decided to simply put distance between the Chiat and himself.

Burrowing was an experience that Zenz was used to, but he still found it unpleasant, especially without his goggles. On top of being an unpleasant way to travel, it was also tiring. Both of these factors meant that, this time at least, the Earth Champion’s journey under the ground was short.

He burst from the ground in a shower of sand and small rocks. He’d aimed to travel directly backwards, toward the Earth Pillar. He’d been successful, travelling in a straight line a few feet from his starting position, just outside the dangerous glass covered area. His magic lingered in the sand tunnel, supporting it.

Luck had not been kind to Zenz in the tournament so far, but now it seemed that was changing. Galvian was standing on the spot Zenz had occupied before diving into the sinkhole. He was surrounded by glass shards, making it almost impossible for the Earth Champion to attack him directly. This seemingly put the Energy Champion at a great advantage, for he had proved more than once that his ranged attacks were potentially deadly. Yet, more important than all this information in Zenz’s mind was the fact that his magically supported tunnel ran directly beneath Galvian’s feet.

He’d attempted the move once before, but it had been completely ineffective. This time though, this time it would work. Zenz simply severed his magical connection from the tunnel and it immediately caved in. The tunnel collapsed almost instantly and, as a result, the sand beneath, in front and behind of Galvian fell into the vacant space.

Zenz smiled, imagining what would happen to his foe. Not only would the Chiat find himself falling under the sand, he would find shards of glass and loose sand pouring on top of him. It was extremely similar to the sinkhole the Earth Champion had opened only shortly beforehand, except this time, it was much deadlier.

Clyde -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/16/2009 23:07:02)

"Figures," snarled Galvian as he watched his opponent runaway right in front of him. He refused to dwell upon what just happened and had to move on. There was too much glass for him even to dash his way out and he could jump granted that it would leave him wide open for a jump like that. It was always these types of situations that made Galvian wish he could fly.

The Earth Champion was clever, he caused his own tunnel to collapse in. It was too late for Galvian to jump to safety and the glass platform he stood on broke and shattered into more pieces and shards. This new sinkhole would definitely kill him if he didn't act fast.

Before falling he clapped his hands together. His electricity and energy began taking a more solid form, quickly forming as it rose from his paws to his arms. He had only one idea to escape this alive and hopefully this would be it. It would take a lot of energy, but now seemed as important a time as any.

This light-blue and white energy started as a sort of exoskeleton for Galvian as it covered his entire body. Until he expanded it to form a type of dome around him. At first it was small and reached about two feet in diameter. Quickly, it continued to grow until about ten feet. Any sand around him instantly turned into glass and any glass shards within the sand became encased in itself.

The end result created a glass crater in the ground. It was almost a perfect crimson glass bowl. The loose shards now blemished it, leaving jagged edges within the sphere. Galvian landed at the bottom of the glass bowl. It wasn't that hard of a fall, but it was the heat left over from the newly created glass that hurt most. He felt like a pancake ready to be turned over to cook the other side.

There was only one other time he had felt heat like this and it was at the hands of the Fire Champion.

Galvian's energy was almost drained. While he was lying on his back he prayed, "Lord of Energy help me now." He didn't expect to gain anything from the prayer. No pity, no sympathy, no understanding. Just the power to keep moving forward and to win this fight. Then the championship.

"Lord of Energy, guide me forward so I... no, we may win this." With these words he attempted to stand, falling to his knees. As he dragged himself forward his knees scraped against the glass. He reach for the closest edge and attempt to climb his way out.

Guardian of Nekops -> RE: =Elemental Championships 2009= Grand Finals (8/17/2009 8:22:40)

The Salt Mage rolled left onto his feet as his dagger scored a deep scratch across the skull of his foe and the flames died, freeing him from the pin. His move towards the vertical was nowhere near as smooth as he would have liked because the scorched flesh of his chest protested despite the scales, and the scratches on his belly also voiced their complaint. He was soon back on his feet and standing tall, however, hand and staff outstretched to control his dagger and the remnants of his shields as his charred robes smoldered, hanging loose about him. Victory had not come cheaply, but it had been won… the hellhound was on the run, skirting the fraud’s Pillar to go lick its wounds.

Suddenly, instead of struggling to survive, all Tel’rion had to do was keep the upper hand, keep chasing the wolf across the sands… he grinned a big toothy grin, realizing that he might have a chance to win this after all.

Turning his gaze from the Champion of Fire to his own materials, the Drakel cried out in shock and rage… though the little white flames of his loose salt had subsided, the dagger’s burning had somehow intensified, reducing it to several pools of molten slag that retained the telltale impetus of the outcast’s desperate attack. Growling at the destruction of his weapon, he slammed the salt together and took advantage of its malleable state to form it into a crude spike, holding this together with his will as he turned the burning mass around.

The magichemist felt the intense heat of his flaming dagger as it whizzed past him, having little time to appreciate the distance he had afforded himself before he plunged it into the Pillar of Water. With a loud hissing of steam and a softer crack as it was immersed, the salt cooled sharply as its journeyed through the waves, emerging solid and barely warm on the far side.

Tel’rion saw what had been his dagger lance out from the side of the Pillar of Water, not a spike as he had expected but three dull gray shards, deadly and keen. Wincing at this unpredicted effect of the rapid cooling, he nevertheless sent them flying towards the wolf's fleeing back as he set about consolidating the rest of his power.
