PD -> Codings for Important Stickeys (11/9/2009 22:56:39)

When it comes to questions, most of them can be relevantly answered by quoting the Rules/FAQS of the Forum, and if needed, the Universal Rules.

Sure, you may think there's no problem, but think again - In such forums, like MQ Q&A or AQW Q&A, many of the questions repeat the FAQ's, or violate the Rules. Sure, simply Quoting the FAQ/Rule can do basic stuff, but, what if the poster doesn't believe the answerer, or doesn't know where they got it from? What if the FAQ/Rule contained a link, or even multiple?

I remember Clyde Making a Coding of the FI's FAQ's before FI went bye-bye, so I see it as a reasonable suggestion

I see the Benefits of providing coding:

  • The Rule/FAQ would not be undetailed, and would provide necessary link(s)
  • The Coding might show them where they got the information from
  • Instead of potential answering people trying to lay down the codings to make it look like they got it from an important resource, and only to find out that the thread was locked/deleted by an AK/Mod because inserting and laying down the coding would take too long, it would be quick, instant, as well as convenient, instead of trying to lay down <insert Rule/FAQ Here. for 4 threads that can all be answered by the same FAQ/Rule.

I know it might take a long time to implement this, but, it will pay off in the future, as the answering and responses will be done a lot quickly and accurately when a Rule/FAQ is necessary to be stated.

There is the problem that it encourages mini-modding. Normally, this rule-quoting is coupled with a legitimate answer, and is just a suggestion, but still.

If you wanted all the rules, you could also just copy-pasta the rules into your own personal word doc and type in the coding (and links) yourself.

Well, if Clyde provided a Coding for the FI's Rules back when it was still around, then I don't think it is against the rules, but Clyde was Clyde E (I guess this name change happened a long time ago). back then, so there might be a possibility for the definitions of "Mini-Modding" have changed.

The problem with making your own coded version on a word doc is that the FAQs are so frequently updated, its nearly impossible to keep track of what has changed. Soon after time, its simply not worth the effort; one might as well copy and paste from the FAQ.

I remember a while back when Zyrain, I beleive, made a coded version of the AQW Q&A FAQ. For some unknown reason, it wasn't stickied, but yes, sure it would certainly help.

In my opinion, although it is nice to have a coded version and it would certainly help, but no, it is not needed. I never venture to the MQ Q&A, but on the AQW Q&A, there's not much to go to the FAQ about. If the question poster reads it, fine. If not, well, there's nothing anyone can do about it, is there? The answers are practically less detailed forms of the answers from the FAQ, and if the answer isn't correct, someone will certainly correct them. As for the links, most of the answer posters provide them in their answer, so yeah...

@Circe, below: Meh, maybe I'm just that kind of a lazy person XD ~jk

I tend not to like coded versions of stickies - I think its unnecessary. The information is already there and I'm not in favor of duplicating efforts more than necessary. FAQs don't change so often that having a wordpad doc or notepad doc with links is too difficult - I *still* have the same doc I started with before I was even an AK with just a few updated links here and there. :P

Icy -> RE: Codings for Important Stickeys (11/9/2009 23:38:29)

Coded FAQ are rather spammy(page stretching) and it isn't that hard to just add the links. I used to, and still do, add the links. It only adds another 5-10 seconds on a post, which isn't much time at all.
The only reason not to add the links is if you are trying to "beat" someone to posting, in which case, the next person gives the better answer anyway because they took the time to add in a couple links.
