How hard is it to get in? I don't see a lot of topics, which indicates that they have few members, but I see a lot of applications.
So if you write an ok essay will you get in or are they very exclusive?

Few topics doesn't always mean few members. There are a lot of "Debatable!" titled Formites out there. They're discussing topics somewhere else.

Anyway, write a good essay, and you're in. It may take a while to get a reply from them though.

Debate club currently has 68 members. Inactivity in the DC forum may just be a result of nobody having something to debate over.

The essay portion of the application is designed to show that you can think critically, develop a stance and defend it reasonably, and write in a manner that can be understood by others. As long as your essay does that the only other qualifier for Debate Club is your forum history. The Debate Club is designed to let users hold more open debates without requiring constant monitoring from froum staff, and to a certain extent to let users discuss topics that might normally be considered "too mature" to be posted in a completely open forum so the staff need to make sure the people who can post in those topics will conduct themselves appropriately. If you have a bad history it will be harder to get in, although a bad history does not guarantee denial (unless it's a REALLY bad history) especially if your recent history shows an improvement in behavior.
