What is "Customization??"

"What is this "customization" thing?", you ask. Well, customization is the process of changing your default weapons on a mech into other external weapons. It is a major factor in MechQuest. Equipping external weapons is a major advantage, if not a must, most of the time.

[CG02]

Why Customize?

Most of the time, default weapons don't do everything you want them to. Sometimes, there might not even be a weapon in every slot on a mecha. For example, take the Newbatron mecha series. It has a default front arm, but no default back arm or shoulders, nor a head. Therefore, you must turn to customization to fill in those missing slots. However, if your mecha is missing a body, well, you can't do anything about it.

Here's another example: Take the V-Trapper series. Against non-vampires, the Back Shoulder has no effect. Same with the Back Arm. Therefore, when you're not fighting vampires, you probably want to equip some shoulders and a Back Arm. This will give you a big advantage.

Also, customization is also vital in farming. Say you're level 32, and you have a level 31 mecha. If you use all defaults, then your enemy is only level 31. However, if you equip a, for example, level 32 Back Arm, then your opponent is level 32. The opponent's level is the average between your mecha's level requirement and the level requirement of the highest level weapon you have, rounded up. If you're level 33, and you're using a level 31 mech, and you equip a level 33 Back Shoulder, then your opponent is only level 32.

In addition, there are mechas that don't have any defaults other than the body. These are called Build-a-Mechs, or BaM's. These special mechs include the Geekatrons and the Pirate Mechas (Sharpshooter, Blade Maniac, etc.). For these mechas, you must use customization. If you don't, well, you'll have a serious disadvantage.

One more thing -- watch out when you're customizing! Not all mechs improve with customization. This still applies with the Nubertron, if you're using it on level 5 or 6. There are almost no weapons better than the default.

[CG03]

How Do I Customize My Mech?

Note: This section is intended for new players.
How do you customize, you ask? It's pretty simple. First, you need to buy a few weapons (see [CG05] for nice weapons to use) with Credits or Nova Gems. Credits are rewards from battling all enemies. To get those, you need to defeat a few enemies. Nova Gems are a special currency that you need to buy with Real Life money. Refer to the MechQuest Home Page for more information. You will have 2500 Credits and 0 Nova Gems as soon as you make your account.

After you have purchased your desired weapons with Credits or Nova Gems, you will need to equip them. To do that, you will need to go to a place where you can equip items. In most areas without dialogue, you should see a button on the Menu at the bottom of the screen, labeled "Equip". The button has a small toolkit on it. If there is dialogue, then important places should have a large to medium-sized red button labeled "Equip". Click the button and you will see a screen with a bunch of items. At the top are your Default Weapons, with a "D" beside them. At the very top, there are some small squares. They show the following, in this order: All Weapons, Heads, Front Arms, Back Arms, Front Shoulders, Back Shoulders, Player-Equippable Items. On the All Weapons mode (which is the default mode), the weapons are listed in this order: Defaults (FA, BA, FS, BS, H, B), Modifiers, Back Arms, Back Shoulders, Front Arms, Front Shoulders, Heads, Other, Player-Equippable Items. Click on the weapons that you want, and click the "Equip" button beside your Bank, where your Credits and Nova Gems are shown. Do not click "Close" by accident. After equipping one weapon, you will probably need to scroll down and click on a different weapon to equip to a different slot and click Equip again. Do this for every weapon desired. Congratulations, you have successfully customized a mech!

[CG04]

What to Do and What Not to Do

This part is a list of what to do and what not to do. Watch out when you're customizing!
What to do:

  • Equip higher leveled weapons onto lower levelled mechs.
  • Use weapons that specialize in areas where the defaults don't.
  • Customize builds that have missing slots.
  • Use Mods. Mods are modifiers that power your stats and sometimes other stuff (e.g. Resistances, etc.)

What NOT to do:

  • Equip lower leveled weapons (there are exceptions) on higher levelled mechs
  • Equip worse equipment
  • Customize mechas that are better off not being customized.
  • Make a build so that you need to skip turns.

[CG05]

Customization Tips

First of all, make sure your weapons' cooldowns don't force you to skip turns. Here is a formula for cooldowns.
quote:

Originally posted by Tetra:
The equation for [customizing] mechs without CD problems is "Y>(X+Y)/Y",
where Y is the number of slots used and X is the total of all the equipped weapons' cooldowns [excluding mods]. If the equation is not true, you will have [to skip turns], although good firing management can delay the gap long enough to destroy your opponent. This also means that the recommended average cooldown rating is X=Y-1 where X is the average cooldown [of all equipped weapons, excluding mods] and Y is the number of [attacking] weapons equipped. [Note that this equation is automatically true if there is a 0 cooldown weapon equipped.]
Bracketed phrases or words are modified parts. They were different in the original post.

Adding good weapons is a tricky process. I have categorized the weapons to the presiquites needed. An " " beside the weapon means that anyone can access it. A " " means that there aren't too many presiquites. means that there are many presiquites. Here are some tips to customization:

[CG05.1]

Levels 1-5:
When you're off the dropship, buy the Katana v1.0. It is the best NSC mecha that is easily accessed at level 3. Enchance its power by equipping some weapons from this list:

Arms:
Crusader's Shining Repeater (Front Arm) -- This is a very good, high-powered weapon, probably the most powerful one at level 3. It is a beast! 16-24 damage! However, watch out for its high energy usage and cooldown.
Experimental Stun Gun (Front Arm) -- This is a also a very good weapon. It can stun enemies, which means that they can't attack for a while. However, it is weaker than the Shining Repeater. If you use this weapon, however, be aware that it uses 35 energy and has a cooldown of 5.
Smokey Flame Thrower (Back Arm) -- The only easily accessable weapon at level 3 that deals a DoT, not including the Front Arm version. Be aware that it has a cooldown of 5, though.
Double Autogun (Front Arm) -- A great arm that has a cooldown of 0. You won't have to worry about skipping turns!
Air Gun -- Probably the best Back Arm in the game for these levels; it can deal extra damage and deal damage to the opponent's EP.

Shoulders:
(This is tricky business. You can't use Front Shoulders, since the Katana doesn't have the slot.)
N-UBER Missile (FLX-N) -- This is a great weapon! Low energy usage, and the 2nd and 4th shot have a higher chance of a Critical Hit!
Retractable Rifle -- Another high damaging weapon! This has a 10% chance of dealing 75% extra damage.

Heads:
(There aren't many NSC heads at such a low level.)
Wolf Head -- The best head from Tek's NSC head shop. Hit +1, Crit +1.

Mod:
(Don't bother.)

When you reach level 5, take the time to farm for a Nubertron. Keep the defaults!!!

[CG05.2]

Levels 6-10
Choice here: Keep your Nubertron, or use a house mecha. I suggest to keep the Nubertron. However, there are better weapons now!

Arms:
(Keep your arms! Or, at high levels, you can use these:)
Proton Rifle (Front Arm) -- A great weapon! Highly accurate AND has good damage.
Used Electron Sniper (Front Arm) -- A weapon that stuns. Recommended at level 8!
Lava Blaster (Back Arm) -- A more powerful Smokey Flame Thrower. That's practically what this is.

Shoulders:
N-UBER Missile (FLX-1) (Front + Back Shoulders) -- A more powerful N-UBER Missile

Mod:
Mildewed Shoe Badge: +3 Power

[CG05.3]

Levels 11-15
Okay, you're at level 11 or so. Here's where things get tricky. There are less choices in Soluna, but there aren't many good mechs on other planets. There are still a few choices in Soluna, though:

Mecha Bases:
Werewolf Mechs -- These are great for lower levels! However they tend to be rather expensive. To get these, you need Rank #32 in the SPD. I suggest only getting the level 12 version, though. At this point, you should be able to defeat Kerberos and the others.
Mecharoni Mechs -- BEASTS! These mechs are probably your best choice. To get these, you need Rank #20 in the Mecharoni.
Skuld/Herja -- This is a great mecha that deals a lot of DoTs. You need Rank #30 at the Specific Hospital. Now with improved specials that might make them better than the Mecharoni mechs.
GLaDERP Security A-15 -- If you can stay below level 27 after unlocking this mecha, this is one of the best lower leveled mechs out there.

Arms:
Proton Rifle -- A great weapon! Highly accurate and has good damage. Now with new specials. Also has a Level 14 version.
Dynamic Air Gun -- Probably the best Back Arm in the game for these levels; it can deal extra damage and deal damage to the opponent's EP. Also has a Level 14 version.
Electromagnetic Cannon -- A rather average weapon. It's on the Moon.
Any Zargon Weapon -- These are ALL really good weapons, at least for these levels.

Shoulders:
Dual Strikes -- A VERY GOOD weapon series. Attacks very well.
N-UBER Missile (FLX-__) -- Any N-UBER Missile is great. This is a great weapon! Low energy usage, and the 2nd and 4th shot have a higher chance of a Critical Hit! However, I don't recommend using high cooldown weapons with this thing.

Heads:
Big Bulk Blast -- A very good head. It's on Zargon.

Mods:
Limburger Badge -- Increases Accuracy by 8.

[CG05.4]

Levels 16-20
Still tricky.

Mecha Bases:
Skalmold -- A great mecha that inflicts a lot of DoTs. Now with improved specials.

Arms:
Elemental Ice Blade OC 1x -- A very good weapon. It has a DoT and extra damage.
Dependable Proton Rifle - A great weapon! Highly accurate and has good damage. Now with new specials.
Forceful Air Gun -- Probably the best Back Arm in the game for these levels; it can deal extra damage and deal damage to the opponent's EP.

[CG05.5]

Levels 21-25:
Alright, more choices!

Mecha Bases:
Powermerged Drakel Power Armor -- A great mecha that steals EP as well as dealing quite some damage.
Geekatron Biped -- Another BaM. This one can activate combos, though. Consult the Ultimate MechQuest Spreadsheet for more info.

Green Frying Pan -- These have a very high chance of stuning. You need to complete the K&S Challenges required, though.
Burning Thorn OC -- Same as the Elemental Ice Blade OC 1x, except stronger.
Makinaga N23P -- An excellent weapon that deals -50 Bonus and -40 Boost for 1 turn. Also has a guaranteed critical chance on the second attack.

Snake Master N-21 -- A very good Front Arm. It deals an HP DoT and an EP DoT.

Trustworthy Proton Rifle -- A great weapon! Highly accurate and has good damage. Now with new specials.

Shoulders:

Dual Strikes -- A VERY GOOD weapon series. Attacks very well.
Mer'a Tube Gun A-1 -- A very good Front Shoulder series. Deals a DoT as well as an IDoT (Increasing DoT)

Ghost of Mantis N-20 -- Has a chance of dealing a DoT as well as decreasing enemy damage and bonus. It is better than the Vladic Pulse, but there is no Back Shoulder alternative to this weapon. The two do stack, however.

Salvageable Items

In addition to the above item choices, there is also a quest that drops many items, some previously rare, some brand-new, known as Salvageable Items. I've decided to make a separate section for these items instead of adding them into the above lists, as they are slightly different from traditional shop items. In addition, instead of being sorted by level, they will be primarily be sorted by item type, and secondarily by level range. I won't be listing the normally obtainable items, only the new and previously rare.

Famous (or Not So Famous) Build "Names"

There are a few build types that have names. In this section of the guide, I'll be naming a few build types that have names to them.

Nerfer: A nerfer is a build that nerfs either Bonus to Hit or Boost, usually Bonus to Hit. A build that nerfs Defense isn't really a nerfer. An alternate name for a nerfer is an "unhittable", if you can get your defense to around 40 and get your opponent's Bonus to Hit down to -70 or lower.

Examples:

quote:

Nerfia (Made by Jiatao24)
Chassis: Deranged Clown
Front Arm: Arthurian Shield Bash
Back Arm: Default
Front Shoulder: Parrot Launcher
Back Shoulder: Pirate's Anchor Hurl
Head: Default
Mod: Trog Twitch
Stat Build: 100 Reflex, 100 Luck

Activations: BA, BS, FS, FA, repeat

Turtle: A "turtle" is a build that buffs Defense. A build that nerfs is usually called a nerfer, and turtles are rather rare in the NSC world. There are a few good builds that are NSC and count as a turtle rather than a nerfer.

EP Drainer: An EP drainer is, obviously, a build that drains EP, or Energy Points. These are also rather rare in the NSC world.

Power Build: A power build focuses on high damage and sometimes defense nerfing. A power build usually has weapons that buff Boost or Bonus to Hit and has weapons that deal extra damage.

Credit to Kuld for showing it on Customania
Version 2.0 made by Homecat52

Chassis: Respective House Mech
Front Arm: Makinga/ Default*/ Ace Card Series**
Back Arm: Shiny Cutlass Throw/
Front Shoulder: Scroll Beam/ Miracyrina Shoulder**
Back Shoulder: Vladic Dark Pulse (For Damage Boost)
Body: Default
Head: Horrifying Harraingo
Modifier: Westion Sherrif Accuracy Badges
Stat Build: All in Power
Notes:
*Only equip these weapons if you are in house Wolfblade
**Only equip these weapons if you are in house Runehawk
Activations/Explanation:

Wolfblade: HD, FA, BA, FS, BS, If not dead by then, spam any weapon.

The Wolfblade version focuses more on the massive damage potential of the Front and Back arms than anything else. Keep these two equipped at all costs. The Head gives a nice 20% general damage buff. The rest are just for pure damage.

Mystraven: CH, HD, FA, BA, FS, BS. Repeat

The CH and HD both give a nice general damage buff that synergize quite nicely. The rest is just using the innate crit and damage boosts in the rest of the weapons to wreak havoc on your enemy.

Runehawk: HD, FA, FS, CH, BS, BA.

The HD, FA, and FS all give either a 1.5x or 2x Dot. Get all of the Dots to activate, then just spam any old weapon to finish them off.

Stunner: A stunner is, obviously, a build that stuns. Stunning builds aren't too common in the NSC world.

DoT Build: A DoT, or Damage over Time, build is a customized build that inflicts many DoT's.

Example(s):
quote:

Freezerburn Hunter (made by zankokuookami):
Body: VH Hunter Series
Head: Defualt
BA: Staff of the Basilisk/ Vampire Cremator
FA: Ace Series
BS: Boreal Cannon
FS: Boreal Cannon

Remember, these are only a few build types out there. There are many more, but it would take a long time to individually name them all. I might add some builds from the Powerful Mecha Builds thread series from the MechQuest General Discussion forum.

In Conclusion

After reading this guide, you should know what customization is, how it works, what to do and what not to do, and how to customize. Happy Customizing!

furryfeet7 -> RE: A Complete Guide to Customization (NSC Version) (3/6/2011 18:42:00)

May I suggest that you could add the level the weapon or level base is after the symbol of how hard it is to obtain?

Peachii -> RE: A Complete Guide to Customization (NSC Version) (9/13/2011 8:08:49)

You might want to add the new Proton Rifle series, as well as the Air Gun series into your guide. ^^

1st Horseman -> RE: A Complete Guide to Customization (NSC Version) (9/24/2011 5:06:44)

I would recommend that you add the salvage quest weapons to your list as it is a way to get some powerful previously rare weps such as the irritating weed killer .

mechquestlord -> RE: A Complete Guide to Customization (NSC Version) (12/2/2011 20:47:05)

(points at salvage missions)

yeah... loads of stuff there i dont see here. theres a salvaged trimissile and it does a crit and -15 bonus nerf. back arm. NSC.

ScytheOfShadows -> RE: A Complete Guide to Customization (NSC Version) (12/10/2011 8:17:15)

Here are some notable and useful NSC salvage weapons:

Salvaged Granger Pilgrim - +30 Bonus, +30 Boost, and drains enemy EP on some hits. An excellent overkill weapon.
Salvaged Choco Bom Boms - Chance for a 1.5x HP DoT and 1.5x EP DoT. Good for a DoT build.
Salvaged Shadowmissile - Highly damaging and high crit chance, with a chance for a 1x HP DoT and 1x EP DoT. Another great weapon for damage.

Here's 2 builds that use mainly weapons from Necryptos, a planet most players would finish before moving on to Yokai/Gladerp.

Name: Corrupted Nerfpire
Chassis: Corrupted Drakel Armor
FA: Dimitri's bats
BA: Anything will work here, preferably something that nerfs defence/highly damaging
FS: Vladic Pulse
BS: Vladic Pulse
HD: Default(unequippable)

Activation method: BD, FS, HD, BA, BS, FA, repeat. Watch out for your EP!

Name: Salvaged Blood Tapper
Chassis: Mechula
FA: Ace Card series/Solar Mace series
BA: Default
FS: Salvaged Choco Bom Boms/Zorbo
BS: Salvaged Shadowmissile
HD: Horrifying Harionago/GridLocker/SsonOS/any BtH buffing Head

Activation Method: HD, BD, BA, FA, FS(should be dead by now), BS to kill fast

HD, FA, BA, FS, BD, BS to do HoTs via life taps

Selutu -> RE: A Complete Guide to Customization (NSC Version) (12/13/2011 8:46:02)

More mechas you might want to add are the Police Mechas. And here are the links for the Hospital Mechas.
