A thread about J.R.R. Tolkien, my favorite author and, in my opinion, one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time.

My favorite book from him is The Children of Hurin, though The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are more known works.

I love his writing style for his more "adult" books. There's always a looming feeling of seriousness.

I agree that Tolkien is a very talented writer.

My favorite story of his is There and Back Again.

I feel that elements Tolkien incorporatd into his fantastical fantasies will make him one of the most modern writers to undergo the scrutiny which is excersized on authors with such great literary merit as Mary Shelley, Mark Twain, and Anton Chekhov.

Tolkien adds in poetry and verse into his narratives. A skill which many cannot accomplish, although strive for.

Truly a great name to add to humanity's history of literature.

Um....
I don't like him. The stories are fantabulous, but his writing style bugs the heck out of me and I can't pinpoint why, which irritates me further, and in the end I just end up throwing the books across the room and looking for the movies instead.

His writing style is alright, but the main thing that attracts about Tolkien is his created world.

Tolkien is for the fantasy novel what Nintendo was for the video game industry. Not Genesis, but defining. And for that reason, he really should be respected, even if you don't particularly like him.

Personally, I do have issues with his style, but the overall story he's famous for is quite astounding. It's... About the closest thing modern literature has to an epic, really, in my opinion.

Professor Tolkien truly was a genius- Writer, soldier, philosopher, linguist, professor and by all accounts a good and kindly man. His works live on today, still remembered and studied and read by countless fans. He left a lasting image on myself as well, for his Lord of the Rings triology was what made me desire to explore the Swords & Sorcery genre, and to experiment, push its boundaries.

Truly, a great man & inspiration.
