Postmaster General -> Guide Writing (5/6/2010 21:22:46)

My Proposal:

A new Community group, known as Guide Writers or something equivalent.

Use to the Community:

This would show users that these Guide Writers were the experts on the subjects they wrote about, that they were helpful especially in the specific area, and that they also possess the skill that many overlook, guide writing.

The title would help explain that the writer were required to meet the specific standards of the Guides AK and that they were successful in doing so.

Guide writing is a little different than writing narratives or poetry. In guides, you must provide the necessary information in an easily understandable fashion possibly provide pictures, and yet still make the textbook-like style somewhat interesting to the reader. This balance of informing and entertaining is a true skill.

The Process on How to Join the Group:

The writer-to-be could either required to write an example guide over a specified subject, preferably one that already has a guide or does not need a guide. This topic would need to be changed regularly to keep the possibility of cheating out of the question. Or, they could do some other test that requires the skills needed to join the group.

Some Changes that would need to be made:

The actual 'Guides' boards would need to be re-formatted to make it so that only members of the Guide Writers would be allowed to post on the board. All non-members that wished to post would need to post in the Update Request board or contact the specific guide writer if they wished to advise something about a specific guide.

Hi Sheriff Duncan,

Any member of the forum community should be able to write a guide as they choose. The AKs and the mods of each guide forum are responsible for making sure the guide is accurate before "publishing" it for the rest of the community to accept as valid, but anyone can submit a guide. The forum staff is not in the habit of creating groups that ultimately prevent users from fully participating in the boards.

Yes, there are places where those groups exist - such as the DF Pedia, the Debate Club and the AQ Pedia. Those are instances where we believe the benefits of limited use override the benefits of full participation. However, our goal is to permit full participation from every user that is interested whenever possible. We like to make people feel special, but not at the expense of the rest of the community. I thank you for your suggestion and the spirit in which it was made, but that isn't the atmosphere we want to promote.
