Aeguis -> One very important question. (5/9/2010 21:29:54)

Alright, I am not mini-moding, I just want to ask this, why is there a rule of "No copyrighted material" if AQWorlds is actually copyrighted material?

Think about it,

Captain Planet,
Every person in the 4th Chaos Lord (Kitsune) tournament.
Led Zeppelin,
ETC.

It may be said as parody, but it has many references and I have known stuff that has gotten sued for this kind of thing,
now my real question is,

Are you gonna get creative, AE?

Adventure Quest isn't a really creative name, and the whole game is a copy of everything else.

P.D: I am not sure about this, but a friend told me they supported me due to "moglins" being a "moogles" or "moguri" from Final Fantasy rip off.

Kain -> RE: One very important question. (5/9/2010 21:35:08)

There's a difference between "copying" a material and claiming to be your own, and doing a parody. Legally, you can be sued for copyright infringement if you use a material copyrighted and claim to be your own, but parodies are legal, so AE can't be sued for it. AE makes jokes and puns about works and persons from other medias for years, and that is, by no means, a show of lack of creativity. If you think AE lacks originality, I suggest playing the Devourer saga on Adventure Quest, it's a great masterpiece in terms of story and characters.

Aeguis -> RE: One very important question. (5/9/2010 21:37:26)

Thanks, but as I have stated above, there has been people already being sued for parodies, so I am asking them to be careful and try to be more creative.

At least give credit, naming the things they parodied, I think they would be safe like that.

Eukara Vox -> RE: One very important question. (5/9/2010 21:56:24)

First off, let me thank you for being so watchful. It is very considerate of you and much appreciated.

But, let me assure you that anything that we put in our game is legal. Parodies are fair game, as long as they are true parodies. We would not use anything in the game without first thoroughly checking ourselves. It takes several people to look through, edit and approve quests as they are put in game. I know this as I have had several go through my stuff to make sure it is good to go.

Parodies are popular form of entertainment. And not everything done by AE is parodies. There are plenty of original plots and story points in all of our games. But, Parodies are fun and they are relational to the players.

We go through checks, editing and tweaking constantly. AE has a nice mix of parody and originality, something for everyone.

Well, The whole AQW game contains tons of "puns" & "spoofs" & the Mythsong area is only one small section and all about music and many music related quests, names, weapons, etc. have been released in there:

Dorian Mode
(NPC / Bard Trainer) = The Dorian mode is named after the Dorian Greeks. Applied to a whole octave, the Dorian octave species was built upon two tetrachords separated by a whole tone.

Pat Minotaur
(NPC/Hairstylist) = most likely referring to Pat Benatar. One of music's top-selling female artists with hit songs such as "Love Is a Battlefield", "Hit Me with Your Best Shot"

Jon Jett (Reputation Vendor) = most likely referring to Joan Jett. She is best known for her work with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts including their hit cover "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"

Metallika (NPC) = well, I don't think I have to introduce her! [;)] (referring to the band name Metallica of course)

Falco (NPC) = Johann (Hans) Hölzel (19 February 1957 – 6 February 1998), better known by his stage name Falco, was an Austrian, pop and rock musician and had six #1 Hits!

Mozzy Mogbourne (Moglin NPC) = most likely referring to John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne (born 3 December 1948) a British singer-songwriter, whose career has spanned four decades. (unmistakably to recognize by the violet sunglasses)

Also many weapon names should be known even by the younger players:
MCHammer (Mace) = well referring to MCHammer of course. Stanley Kirk Burrell (born March 30, 1962), best known by his stage names MC Hammer

Brawn Jovi (Polearm) = most likely referring to Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi is an American hard rock band from Sayreville, New Jersey. Formed in 1983.

Red Hot Chilli Poker
(Polearm) = most likely referring to Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1983.

This only a part of the "puns" / "spoofs" in the new AQW area & there are tons of others!

I don't really see a problem here, this kind of "puns" & "spoofs" make the game more fun!

1. There is no legal problem! (my brother is lawyer & he says the way they used the names it is *100 % legal)
2. Its promotion for the bands, VIPs, celebrity without AE getting paid for it.
3. Its a nice test to see how much the AQW players know the world, because if you don't know the world you don't get its spoofs! [;)]

* In the legal parody the original is not allowed to be copied by 1:1 but allowed to be mentioned / used when altered but it has still to be able to be recognized, best examples: Scream <> Scary Movie / Star Wars <> Spaceballs

Aeguis -> RE: One very important question. (5/10/2010 21:40:25)

Black knight, NOT LIKE IT!? Are you kidding me? It's awesome! I am just telling them that they should concentrate in game plot and do less in parodies and name the things, but I have been answered already, I never said i didn't like the game.

Asgaurdian lord -> RE: One very important question. (5/11/2010 4:07:02)

@above

the people at the tornament where supposed to resemble the characters from different animes so its not relly copyright.

black knight 1234567 -> RE: One very important question. (5/11/2010 5:12:02)

Oh sorry Aeugis, but the Yokai is 100% parodys even Kitsune is a spoff of Shredder.

Armakuny -> RE: One very important question. (5/11/2010 5:40:35)

As I already mentioned above, the parody content of AQW is 99% legal, but I am not so sure about this "copy":

AQW "Grand Master Ironcrusher" <> Warhammer "Ironbreaker Epic armor"

It is always a fine balance between legal and illegal when you copy / parody = to play it safe you may only use things you have created/invented!

I really think the AE team are aware of these things and even if they are not, it is their problem not yours!

Anyway, I am going to log this one one to prevent discussion respectively an endless loop! ~ Army ~
