Simple put: sometimes we're posting in a thread, reading through a thread and we bump into a message saying it was deleted, or sometimes we bump into a locked thread or even into a random edited message that makes you wonder why it was edited. However reasons remains unknown. My idea is a "Reason for" field that would appear after thread's locking, deletion or simply after a message was edited. then it could show something like this:

"Thread deleted. Reason: Hacking discussion."
"Thread locked. Reason: Flame wars."
"Message edited by ___. Reason: Oops! Typo!"

I know deletion removal is reported to the OP, but it would be really usefull if everyone could know. I know you shouldn't give us satisfaction, but this is just a suggestion.

If a staff/staff assistant edits a message, they typically leave a message stating why it was edited. The same applies for locked threads.

If a post was deleted, it's usually because it violated some rule. There's really no need for there to be a public message explaining why someone's post was deleted. It might actually lead to more rule violations. >_>

I wondered so because some forums do that. Once they delete, if the person was viewing the thread, a message would show up.

Sometimes, they don't send a message to the OP at all. >_>

Generally speaking, the original poster of a thread will be notified on a thread delete. There are sometimes reasons why this doesn't happen, which include things like the thread starter not being able to receive PMs, or the thread having been removed for other people's rulebreaking.

As for other people though, I agree with shadowyams; 99 times out of 100 the reason for thread deletion doesn't need to be public (and indeed if a public notice were needed, the thread would be locked rather than deleted).

And the other reason for deleting threads rather than locking them is so there aren't a ton of locked threads
clogging up the forum. Looks ugly and an inconvenience since it tends to push the legitimate threads to page 2 and beyond...
