In a discussion it helps a lot to see if posts have been deleted, no matter if a mod deleted it or the player himself.
There only needs to be one line stating it has been deleted. It doesn't even need the avatar or the links to the char pages etc.

Note: I am only talking about deleted posts in a thread, not deleted threads in a forum.

Kain -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/19/2010 17:25:20)

I don't like this idea, as I feel it could affect the privacy of the forum member seeing X deleted his post (and could raise questions, which in some cases could be unpleasant).

I don't think seeing X deleted his post has any use in any discussion: The argument is deleted, and people should move on (specially because when a post is deleted, it has its reasons). The only use I could see would be to make a quote make sense if the original source was deleted, but even so it contributes minimally to the discussion.

Everest -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/19/2010 19:43:58)

Even in the situation Kain mentioned, the forum staff usually deletes or edits post that reference the original deleted post to keep the discussion flowing. So I don't quite see how the ability to see a deleted post would be beneficial, especially considering the negative effects this implementation would carry with it.

As well, a deleted post should be between the member and the deleting staff member/staff assistant. Even if a [This Post was Deleted] was the only message, it's still out in the open, for very little reason that I can see.

Hedning1390 -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/21/2010 11:29:15)

Im not sure how it is affecting your privacy. I wouldn't mind at all if a deleted post of mine said deleted rather than being totally gone. What kind of questions and unpleasant for whom? Other forums has this, I didn't come up with it myself, and it works fine.

It is kind of the same idea as with the edit line. You can see if something happened that have affected others but not you.

I would think it is especially important when a mod deletes a post, because then a third party is affecting the discussion. I have seen a moderator make a post himself about the deletions (rare but it happens). That's good but this would just be more automatic and would not depend on the situation or the mood of the moderator.

One of our policies is that any Warnings, Bans or other reprimands that a forum user receives are something that stays between them and the moderating staff. If it were to become visible that a post had been removed for, say, flaming and trolling, then this would break this policy. When posts are removed such that it will seriously affect the thread that it happened in, we generally post letting you know that posts have been removed for rulebreaking (however, again this does not give specifics, nor does it make public whose posts were removed).

The alternative, just having nothing but a "Post Removed" sign, wouldn't really have any use in a discussion; at the moment if a post is deleted and it makes the discussion disjointed, you can assume that's what's happened. I don't see how clarification of that point would help anybody.

Also, aside from the above, that would, I beleive, not be the easiest thing in the world to code.

Hedning1390 -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/22/2010 11:01:14)

Of course the reasons or anything like that would not be shown. There is no need. Just as I said in my first post: A single line only stating that there used to be a post there.

I still think it would make this forum better and more open, the delete line will have just as much use as the edit line. Deletion is after all a kind of edit. I'm sorry if you don't see why it is useful.

I get the feeling that this has more do do with you forum mods than the forum users since you are all so surprisingly strongly against it, but since I can see that this will never be implemented I'll drop it.

Sir Gnome -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/22/2010 11:21:17)

I just don't see what advantage such a feature could bring. As I said above, if a post being deleted makes the discussion slightly disjointed, then its fairly clear that a post has been deleted, and so a note saying so is superfluous. If the discussion is not affected whatsoever by posts being removed, then how does it help people to see that some have been?

Acient J -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/23/2010 15:09:56)

I would actually like a way to restore deleted posts. As for a note saying they're deleted? Only for the poster/deleter.

Chii -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/23/2010 15:13:18)

Being able to restore deleted posts would rather defeat the point of them being deleted.

Acient J -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/23/2010 15:56:16)

I had an incident once during the approval process in L&L (when there was one) where I lost all but the prologue of a three-chapter thread. I had backup copies, but someone else could have less luck. If not a member to restore deleted posts, then a moderator.

Chii -> RE: Show deleted posts (5/23/2010 16:05:07)

Moderators can restore deleted posts if you get to them quickly enough.
