It is there, but not automatically checked off and running.
As for your idea about the number, that would be quite cool. It might be possible (If the coders can do it) to have both parts of your idea merged, so when you have a new PM the box pops up, but it SAYS how many you have :) That way, you don't have to be going through your PM box every time there's a new PM, to make sure there isn't others. Personally, I think the idea you were getting to is great!
